2016 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN).Students in Year 3 or Year 5 at St Gabriel’s this year will soon be participating in the National Assessment of Literacy and Numeracy program. Dates in 2016 are; Tues 10th May, Wed 11th May & Thurs 12th May

● Please do your best to ensure that your child attends school on these days. •

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already acquired through the school curriculum so there is no specific NAPLAN coaching or preparation needed. Teachers at St Gabriel’s have been making sure that our students are familiar with the test formats. We suggest parents visit the NAPLAN website at www.nap.edu.au to look at past tests to better understand what is involved. NAPLAN tests are only one aspect of our school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace the extensive ongoing assessment made by teachers about each student’s performance, they simply give us additional information to guide our teaching. NAPLAN results also give parents an indication of their child’s ability.Should you have any questions or queries about NAPLAN please feel free to come and see me or send me an email. [email protected] and I will be happy to discuss it with you. Martine Klaic

It’s that time of the year to enter the Dante Alighieri competition.

We have been proud winners of the Dante poster junior competition for many years. We have attended Melbourne university presentation nights many times to receive our awards. We have also received many other awards where the children have qualified in many categories, for example: High distinction, finalists, honourable mention etc…

Based on our results I would like to give the children an opportunity to be part of another Dante Alighieri competition. The Dante Alighieri Society has designed a multimedia competition for Year 7 to Year 12 students. It has now been opened only to Year 5/6 students, to create a short 5 minute film in Italian.

The main aim of the Multimedia competition is to invite students to utilise their developing ‘IT’ skills, and showcase their written Italian and spoken Italian skills in making a film based on the class topic that will be judged by the ‘Dante’ panel, and will eventually also be displayed to the wider public at the Presentation Ceremony towards the end of the year if it’s the winning film.

Best entry will receive $500 (students can work in groups of four, three, two or on their own), (N.B $100 of this amount will be to fund Italian Resources or Excursions/incursions, whilst the remaining $400 will be divided up equally amongst the winning students or be given entirely to one student, should that student have entered on their own). All entrants will receive a certificate of participation.

We wish the students GOOD LUCK/ BUON LAVORO with this new assignment.

Thank you Miss Natalina Paglianiti

CAKE STALL, SATURDAY 7th MAYBUNNINGS, 11 Dalton Road, Thomastown

We are holding a cake stall at Bunnings on Saturday 7th May. We would love it if all parents could contribute a home made cake for the stall. Cakes must not contain cream or require refrigeration. We are going to dress the table in a ‘Mother’s Day’ theme, so some cakes and sweets to suit the theme would be great, but this is not essential. Large cakes, cupcakes, slices etc. are welcome.

Please bring any items for the stall to the north end of the hall next Friday 6th May.Or please bring your cake directly to the cake stall, pre-wrapped, on Saturday 7th May (the cake stall will be located in the foyer of Bunnings). Please provide details of the product on the form that will be provided early next week.

Thank you to the 7 wonderful mums who have already volunteered to help on the day. We are looking for just one more volunteer.

If you are able to help for just 2 hours, please let Kim Laurence know: 0414 843 814
