Swimming Program

Dear Reservoir Families,

Every Thursday our Foundation and Year 1/2 students have been enjoying the swimming program at the YMCA

Leisure City. It was delightful to go down to the pool last Thursday and watch our students relishing the water

during their lessons. Even only after just 3 sessions, their teachers commented on the increased confidence and

skills the children displayed. I could certainly see a lot of resilience and persistence being displayed by all our

young students; and most importantly, the smiles on their faces showed me they were having a lot of fun.

I hope you are all looking forward to coming along to our annual Mini Fair this Friday, it will be lovely to see lots

and lots of our families sharing this event with their children, grandchildren and teachers.

Remembrance Day in Australia

Wednesday 11 November 2016

Remembrance Day in Australia is dedicated to Australians who died as a result of war, particularly from World War I onwards. A minute of silence is dedicated to the deceased, especially for soldiers who died fighting to protect the nation. Remembrance Day is annually observed on November 11 although it is not a public holiday.

This year 11 November marks the 98th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First

World War (1914–18).

The poppy is a popular Remembrance Day symbol. The poppy is a popular Remembrance Day symbol.

What do people do? Many Australians stop what they are doing at exactly 11am in their local times on November 11 each year to dedicate a minute of silence for those who died in war, especially soldiers from as far back as World War I. Those who join in this act of remembrance include teachers, students, politicians, and workers of public and private sector enterprises.

Many people wear artificial poppies on the day and key political figures make speeches in remembrance of the nation’s fallen heroes. Services are held at 11am at war memorials in suburbs and towns across the country, at which the “Last Post” is played by a bugler and a one-minute silence is observed. Remembrance Day has been partly eclipsed by ANZAC Day as the national day of war commemoration.

Remembrance Day is not a public holiday in Australia, however many workers stop what they are doing at 11am for a minute of unified silence before resuming work again.

The Junior School Council will be selling items on behalf of the Reservoir RSL. Children can purchase the following items from the classrooms at lunch eating time from the Junior School Council Representatives:

Pens $5.00

Poppies $2.00

Poppy Wristband $3.00

Poppy Bag Tag $4.00

Poppy with Lest We Forget $5.00

October each year and is a chance to support our teachers and the

crucial work they do.

World Teachers' Day acknowledges the valuable role that teachers play in lives of students of all ages.

Great teaching takes place all across Victoria including Melbourne, Reservoir PS.

Here are a few things people had to say about teachers:

A good teacher is like a candle- it consumes itself to light the way for others.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. - Nelson Mandela

Teachers who love teaching, teach children to love learning.

My teacher gave me the best gift of all: Believing in ME!

Teaching children is an accomplishment;

Getting children excited about learning is an achievement.- Robert John Meehan

The best teachers are those who show you where to look but don’t tell you what to see.- Alexandra K.Trenfor

CRAZY HAIR DAY

Our next Fundraising event is on Wednesday 16th November 2016 supporting children with Cystic Fibrosis. We call it Crazy Hair Day. Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common inherited, life limiting condition affecting young Australians today. Living with CF means struggling to breathe, constantly fighting infections, battling against malnutrition and exhaustion, a daily routine of medication and physiotherapy to help the lungs and digestive systems. This means frequent hospital visits for treatment. We are trying to create greater awareness and understanding of CF. All you have to do is join in the fun for our ‘Crazy Hair Day’ on Wednesday 16th November. It’s easy: You can do this to your hair: Curl it Twist it Colour it Tease it and kindly make a gold coin donation. We look forward to seeing everybody in full school uniform however you may look a little bit different because of your hair! Thanking you, Young Leaders, Junior School Councillors and Maria Mirasgentis.

Ride 2 School OCTOBER REPORT The Ride2School Program works with more than 2,000 schools across Australia, just like ours, to support students being active as a part of their everyday travel.

School aged students require a minimum of 60 minutes per day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Encouraging our

students to actively travel can help them reach their daily requirement of physical activity.

By supporting an active travel culture within our school community we can champion positive behaviours, and

see the benefits in our students who naturally become healthier, happier and more socially connected students.

Other benefits of student’s activity travelling to school are:

• Students have fun while getting fit and healthy

• Riding to school will reduce traffic around the school, making trips to school faster

• Students will arrive at school alert and are more attentive in class.

Our Ride2School morning this month showed lots of students arriving at school by private car. Perhaps you can

ask your parents/carers to park a block or two away and enjoy a brisk walk to school while you talk with family

and friends or simply getting fit and healthy. Give it a go. You will never, never know!

Our active travel rate for the month of October was 50%. That’s exactly 15% lower than last month’s percentage.

Here is an overall ‘Hands up survey’ for all our students on the day.

October 2016

Ride/Skate/Scoot 19 students

Walk 121 students

Car 130 students

Public Transport 8 students

The winners of the Active Traveller Award for our Foundation- Year 2 area for the month of October was Group 5

and 7 with 67% each. What a draw and they meet again in first place!

(9% down from last month if we compared these two winners)

The winner of the Active Traveller Award for our 3-6 area for the month of October was Group 14 with 100%.

What a group and what a team effort!

Congratulations to all students!

CELEBRATE CHILDREN’S WEEK 2016 Children's Week is a national program recognising the

talents, skills, achievements and rights of young people. It is

Convention on the Right of the Child, highlighting the

importance of play, wellbeing and protection. This year, Children's Week will run on Saturday 22 - Sunday 30 October 2016, held over two weekends. This year's theme focuses on children having the right to reliable information from the media.

Over the week, there will be many free community events and fun activities across Victoria, ranging from music and dance workshops, art and craft activities, entertainment, exhibitions, guided walks, storytelling, children's fairs and much more.

Children's Week highlights the terrific work educational services and community groups do in Victoria, the

Education State and is supported by The Department of Education and Training ensuring that every child

experiences the chance to succeed, in learning and in life.

Below are the results for the 14th October: Kanga Cricket: What a beautiful and windy day to play Kanga Cricket. We started off with the coin flip. They chose heads and we flipped for the win. Our amazing captain Freya and the team chose to field. We started strongly with Edward using his great bowling skills. Kayda took a catch followed by Charli. When we were bowling Kayda also stumped two people out. Parth with his long throw that Freya caught, got someone out. Then we started with a bang. Freya and Charli batted and made 3 runs. Then Edward and Dylan batted well hitting 13 in total! Between Balkaran, James, Aksh, Rutvi, Peter and Parth we hit another 14 runs in total. We all had an incredible game with excellent sportsmanship between William Ruthven and Reservoir PS. It was an amazing game. In conclusion Reservoir PS averaged 3.1 runs per wicket and William Ruthven averaged 6.6. We lost but it was a great game overall. Everyone did a good job keeping spirits up and cheering team members on. Girl’s Bat Tennis: Not too hot, not too cold. It was just right. But we’re not discussing a famous fairy tale by a famous author; no, we’re speaking about the weather on the day of our first bat tennis match. With the lovely sun beating down on our faces we started off with Singles A (Casey) and Doubles A (Sophie & Bridgette). Poor Casey’s face was dripping with sweat as she wildly dashed around the court. Putting in all her willpower, she ended the game, winning, only letting the opposition win four matches. Luckily all Casey’s efforts paid off. Communicate, that’s exactly what was running through the minds of Sophie and Bridgette on their first nerve-racking game of doubles together. As they were Doubles A the pressure was on. Adrenaline coursed through their veins as they expected the worst. But they were wrong. The opposing duo were much younger than them and they managed to win with little to no effort as they hardly put up a fight. We won all the games. Next were the B players. Tahlara was playing singles B and to put it simply, she did amazing; only allowing her opponent to better her three times. She won in 12 games. Stephanie and Lauren worked well as a team in Doubles B. They were both incredibly skilled, but their opponents trumped them. Even though they didn't win any games, they marched onto the court with

confidence and they marched off the same, knowing they had given it their all. Winner or not, we can certainly assure you we all had a great time playing against William Ruthven Primary School in the Girl’s Bat Tennis. Boy’s Bat Tennis: It was a great day for our first bat tennis match of the season. The weather was just perfect and we were ready to play. The first singles set was Corey against Patrick from William Ruthven. The scores were Patrick 1 game to Corey 9 games. Corey was the winner. The second set was Mohamed and Zac vs Raymond and Seb from William Ruthven. The scores were Mohamed and Zac 9 games to William Ruthven 1 game. The third set was Ogi and Naufal vs Amin and Yousef from William Ruthven. The scores were 9 to 4 games and our school won. We had a great day and wish William Ruthven the very best for the rest of the season. Rounders A: It was an amazing sunny day to play Rounders. We lost the toss and they decided to field. Gabby was first up and she had goose bumps all over. We had some amazing bats by Amy, Chantelle, Praijini, Makayla and Angie. That got us to 5 runs the first innings. But William Ruthven came back with 2; we also had some amazing fielding by Leila, Angie, Abby, Ysi and Gabby. We had an awesome first game; we gave it our all and tried our hardest. We had some amazing team work and wish to win our next one. The final scores were William Ruthven 8 and Reservoir 16. We were very proud and can’t wait for our next game. Rounders B: Our hearts were racing as Team A finished their game. This was the first time most of us had ever played Rounders, we were against William Ruthven. We flipped the bat and decided to field. Emma pitched the ball, we couldn’t even tell what happened and it was so confusing and quick. We started off the game with a Boooom! 2 outs straight away! Before you knew it, it was 3 outs, our turn to bat. We didn’t do as well as we thought we would, but we still held our heads high and kept going. Our team wasn’t going to give up! Resilience! Even though we got 3 outs very quickly, we still did very well. Then it was the second innings which was one of our best because we got people out pretty quickly. Chloe, Anqi, Jolin and Calie did an amazing job at fielding on the bases. Allegra did a good job at finding and collecting the ball every time it went into the bushes. Alita, Maddy and Zeynep did a brilliant job at fielding also. We all persisted and the end results were so close! The final score was William Ruthven 7 and Reservoir 6. We had such a great game and even though we lost we are confident that we are going to win next time.
