Analysing the offensive phase

Construction phase: 1-3-4-3

• Normally plays in a 1-4-2-3-1 and in this game against PSG the team played

using a 1-3-4-3, being this the first time this season.

• As main solution the team tries to be vertical early in the game, searching to

quickly arrive to the opponents box, tries to do it by direct balls.

• These direct balls are not the only solution to arrive to the offensive wings, the

objective is also to try to progress with ball and by quick passing, with the main

objective of creating goal situations.

• These different solutions will vary according to the pressing zones of PSG, that

normally tries to make high pressing, making it difficult for the opponents to

get out of their pressure.

Ligue 1 2015.2016

Page 6: Report AS Monaco - English Version

Construction phase: Exterior Game

• The 3 defenders try to exit wide with ball controlled to join the medium zones, keeping

the team very compact in order to prepare for the transition and 2nd ball.

• Os 3 offer quality and mobility, specially Carvalho and Jemerson have technical quality in

the shirt/long passes and ball progression.

• The wings are the privilege zones to start the attacks, normally with Elderson and Fabinho

very wide as wing backs and with space to attack in dept.

• The two centre midfielder Bakayoko and Toulalan, work in this phase as two solutions to

support and circulate the ball possession in the centre of the game.

• For this more direct style the team stretches very well their positions, offering more tall

positions in order to be as more profound as possible.

Ligue 1 2015.2016

Page 7: Report AS Monaco - English Version

Creation phase:

• AS Monaco reaches this phase normally by the exterior corridors, using the wing backs to

attack, normally there is also a variation of wings that is done by the centre midfielder with

the purpose of exploring the free space.

• The key player in this offensive phase is Toulalan, functioning as a barometer, organising the

teams game with variations of short and long pass, he is mostly the player that choses when

to change corridor to explore and attack the space (exiting from the pressured spaces);

• The team tries to use many players in this phase in order to use quick combinations to arrive

to finishing zones.

• Even in this 1-3-4-3, AS Monaco maintains it’s identity, and likes to control the offensive

midfield exploring the wings and playing as a compact unit in all the phases of the game.

Page 8: Report AS Monaco - English Version

Creation phase:

• The wing-backs, mainly Fabinho, gets inserted in the attack, offering even more mobility when

connected with the 3 forwards, and becoming even stronger in the 1x1 situations with quick ball

shifts, trying to take advantage of the fact that the opponent is, generally, high/tall on the pitch, and

exploring the free spaces in their back.

• AS Monaco is quick in this phase of the game, sometimes creating space to explore it quick, instead

of the positional, ball possession, game that PSG plays.

• Most of the movements trough the wings created a lot of trouble to PSG, the side forwards Lemar

and Mbappé come to interior spaces, allowing the wing backs to appears in width, enlarging the

attack of AS Monaco and obligating PSG to shift quick.

• The 4 players that play in the wings, on the left Elderson and Lemar, on the right Fabinho and

Mbappé play with their best foot, and all of them are comfortable either playing trough the wing

and searching for crosses or coming to interior spaces to unbalance the defensive organisation of

PSG.

Finishing phase

• AS Monaco tries to place many players in finishing zones and as referred before, with the

presence of both wing-backs in full width of the pitch.

• As Toulalan in the creation phase, now Lemar is the key player in the finishing phase, he

possesses a great technical level and moves smartly trough the pitch, the side-forward

comes many times with ball to interior spaces, making hard for the PSG defenders to adjust

the marking and at the same time creating new passing lines for his team.

• The right wing is the most used in this match, Fabinho is solicited many times and serves the

front with important crosses or with interior diagonals to the space.

• AS Monaco wasn’t strong in the aerial duels, however due to the low stature of the players

most of the crosses are taken tense to the box so the disadvantage is not present.

• In this phase, AS Monaco tries to dominated the 2nd ball (re-bounces) so it’s common to see

Toulalan close to the box to attack these balls.

Finishing phase

• Besides the reduced % of ball possession AS Monaco created many situations of goal.

• Most part of them were created by the external corridors (Fabinho and Elderson)

• AS Monaco was strong and aggressive in the finishing moments

• Many shooting chances when considerer the % of ball possession;

41% of attacks by the right wing Shooting zones

Offensive transition

• This moment of the game was the preferential of AS Monaco, appropriating the fact that PSG was most of the

time high/tall in the field and in positional attack (sometimes wrongly positioned).

• Leonardo Jardim was pushed to defensive spaces by the possession game of PSG, as a consequence AS

Mónaco almost every time recovered the ball in the zones 1 and 2 meaning between the phases of

construction and creation (due to the positioning of the defensive block);

• Normally the ball recover was done in the interior spaces but was quickly sent to the wings (mostly the 1st

pass after the ball recovery had that tactical intention).

• In 26 ball recoveries, AS Monaco recovered 20 in the central corridor and defensive midfield;

• The transition is normally temporised from the defensive to the offensive spaces giving time to the offensive

movements to start and then when the players start getting positioned in width and depth there is a rhythm

increase and quick ball shifts (normally to the free wing) to attack from a good angle.

• The team in this moment, normally, uses all the 3 forwards plus the wing-backs that get inserted in the

offensive movements, being all of them very strong 1vs.1. The 2 wing-backs (transport and protect very well

the ball) are very quick and can use the space to cross, progress or finish.

Defensive Organisation: 1-5-4-1 low defensive block

• In this moment of the game the two wing backs Fabinho and Elderson will join the 3 centre backs,

forming a defensive line of 5 players;

• The two side-forwards will join the two centre midfielder, forming a line of 4;

• AS Monaco allows PSG to start building without pressure, the team drops both lines, compacting

them and tries to not drop more than the defensive midfielder spaces, it’s in those spaces that AS

Monaco starts pressing more intensely with the objective of making transition from there;

• The teams occupies very well the wings, with active pressure over the ball carrier and obligates PSG

to try to explore the interior spaces;

• The 2 centre midfielder are more positional and they search to close lines of pass, while the side-

forwards Lemar and Mbappé are more intense and try to condition aggressively the ball carrier,

giving then more cohesion in the central spaces in front of the defensive line (zone where more balls

are recovered);

• The Striker Wagner Love drops some meters to be closer to the team, but rarely is active in the

pressing moments.

Problems caused by PSG to AS Monaco

• These punctual changes to 3.4.3 in order to face PSG revealed difficulties, facing a good opponent, beside the fact that they didn't suffer any goal

• PSG always managed to use their collective quality in positional attack and the individual talent of their players to possess the ball in Monaco’s half.

• Ibrahimovic leaves his zones frequently to help organising the teams positional attack;

• He transports the ball quick to penetrate and finds good solutions in combinations with

his colleagues with precise short passes;

• By this movement he allows Cavani to occupy the central role, and also indirectly space

is now open in the left wing for the entry of Maxwell.

Keeping their usual dynamics PSG tries to:

• Explore the central zones with a direct approach to explore the height of the centre

backs of Monaco (short defenders);

• Explore the spaces left by Zlatan that are know unmarked without the reference of

Zlatan;

• Explore the entries of Cavani, in quick diagonals, in Raggi’s spaces.

24 BALL LOSSES Defensive transition

• Using counter and fast attack as main offensive solution, the team loses the ball mostly in the

medium and high sectors and in the lateral corridors;

• With the objective of placing as much players as possible in these attacks, when the ball is lost, in

immediate transition the defensive midfielder and 3 centre backs are the players that are left to

cover the space.

• Even when very high on the field, when losing the ball Monaco choses to not do a immediate

pressure, but to drop quickly and reorganise the defensive block as quick as possible, to defend in

their planned zones;

• AS Monaco had 24 ball losses, most of them happened in the offensive midfield (14), that proves

that their main objective in this games was to quickly explore the empty spaces in PSG’s defensive

half (mostly in counter attack).

the game only in the last minutes.

free-kicks:

• AS Monaco only had one free kick close to the box in this game, and
