Explaining diagram 1.0 The inner circle centering on life skills ensures that students acquire sound values and skills to take them through life as responsible adults and active citizens. It comprises the non-academic curriculum. The middle circle on knowledge skills seeks to develop students’ thinking, process and communication skills. This will enable students to analyze and use information and be able to express their thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively. It comprises skills-based subjects. The outermost circle covers the content-based subject disciplines i.e. Languages, Humanities & the Arts, and Mathematics & Sciences. It ensures that students have a good grounding in content across different areas of study.

English at Primary Level Objectives: 1. All our pupils will be able to use English to express themselves.

3. The majority of our pupils will attain a good level of competence in English, in
both speech and writing. Some in this group who have a flair for the language will find this an advantage in frontline positions and various service industries.

Singapore Primary School Curriculum
English at Primary Level Approach: Principled blend of first language (L1) and second language (L2) teaching methods to achieve a balance between: • Systematic and explicit instruction to build a strong foundation in language
skills, grammar and vocabulary; and • A contextualized and holistic approach to learning that will provide a rich
language environment for developing language skills, grammar and vocabulary.
Ø Strengthening the foundation of language learning through: • A greater focus on oral communication (listening and speaking skills) • Focus at the Lower and Middle Primary levels on the enjoyment of language
before pupils formally learn the metalanguage and grammatical items associated with texts.
• Attention to phonemic awareness, phonics and early literacy skills at the start of Primary 1 to lay the foundation for acquiring reading fluency, comprehension and viewing skills and strategies at all levels.
