What was the Renaissance?

• The rebirth of classical learning and the arts in Europe beginning in the 1300s; transitional period from Medieval times to modern times

• Medieval Scholars = life & death

• Renaissance Scholars = here & now / individual achievement

• Wealthy traders, Popes and Princes demanded new art. To show their wealth (and power) to

society.

• Humanists brought out individual creativity and expression.

• They also believed in the study of classical times (ancient Rome/Greece) and worldly subjects. A more “personal” view of religion.

1. Humanist Influence: Paintings were done of well known figures of the day

2. Greek & Roman Influence:

Artists studied many ancient Greek and Roman works and revived many classical forms. Including Gods and Goddesses.

3. Perception: Many artists painted humans and

landscapes in a new realistic way. The paintings looked more three dimensional by painting distant objects smaller than those close up.

4. Detailing:

The introduction to shading was present in the Renaissance. It made objects look round and real.

5. Architecture: Architecture rejected the Gothic style and adopted arches, domes, and columns.

7. New Methods:

The method of Frescoes Painting, (done on wet plaster) became popular because it gave depth to the paintings.
