We start with a historical survey spanning African Muslim slaves brought to the Americas in the antebellum period to the ongoing marginalizaon of Muslims aſter the 2016 elecons. We then explore American Muslim communal and demographic diversity, polical and civic organizaons, polical parcipaon, religious pracces as well as family, educaon, knowledge producon and cultural diversity. Special aenon will be paid to ques- ons of gender, race, and cizenship, as well as to issues of religious au- thority and authencity. The course engages diverse materials within the contexts of both American religious history and Islam as a global religious tradion. RELI 248Introduction to American Islam

Spring 2021

This course provides an introduction to the presence of Muslims in the United States through both historical and thematic inquiry. We start with a historical survey spanning African Muslim slaves brought to the Americas in the antebellum period to the ongoing marginalization of Muslims after
