WHY USE THIN STONE VENEER?

Thin stone veneer is a natural slate with its bottom side made of polyester resin enforced with fiberglass. It is a flexible stone veneer which may be applied onto concrete, ceramics, wood, metal, plywood, plastic, tiles, walls, paint, MDF board, doors and furniture. The stone veneer has been tested under various conditions. It is an excellent substitute for thick and heavy natural stone slabs whenever they cannot be used for practical or economical reasons. It is not recommended to use the stone veneer on floors in commercial spaces or on worktops.

simpleCan be cut with tin snips or small angle grinder. Usually fixed using grab adhesive. Sheets can be butt jointed or finished with mortar joint.

versatileSuitable for both internal and externalapplications, flat and curved surfaces including pillars. So lightweight that there are no structural implications.

flexibleit is natural stone that can be fitted to any surface, flat or curved such as pillars. It is very flexible and easily bends as on average it is 2 mm thick only.

and pattern, displaying all the qualities of natural stone.

economicalMuch quicker and easier to fit than any other kind of stone, whether panel or walling stone,

meaning lower fitting and labour costs.

FITTING GUIDELINESCUTTINGEven the most basic tiling equipment is sufficient for installing the stone veneer. Long metal-cutting shears are recommended for cutting stone-veneer, although power-tools, such as angle grinder, may be used as well.

APPLICATIONApplying and locating sheets of stone veneer is very similar to installing natural stone slabs. Stone veneer is a natural material and each sheet is different. Before actual fixing, it is recommended to determine exact composition of sheets to match varying patterns and hues of colour: place each sheet in its destined place and mark their order before final installation.

SEALINGInitial sealing of stone veneer before installation is recommended. Sealer protects slate against staining from adhesive or grout used during installation. Sealers for slate, other natural stone or wood can be used. Testing sealer to confirm its aesthetic effect on the stone veneer is advisable.

FIXINGChoosing the right adhesive is of paramount importance; every adhesive should be tested before use. Consider temperature and moisture levels of the place where the veneer is to be installed. When installing outdoors, take the thermal expansion into account. Test primer before application beforehand as well.

RECOMMENDED ADHESIVESHybrid polymer based adhesive - for use on any surface, does not require constant pressurePolyurethane adhesive - for furniture exposed to moistureContact adhesive - for elements of furnitureEpoxy adhesiveDispersion adhesive for ceramics (highly absorbent substrates)

APPLICATION - PRESSUREMethod of application is similiar to hanging wallpaper. Spread adhesive using notched trowel, any irregularities of substrate should be levelled-out before application of stone veneer Start by applying one edge and gradually spread the sheet. The best way to apply uniform pressure to the sheet is by using a roller; it will enable removing any air bubbles from between the sheet and the substrate.

GROUTINGStone veneer can also be used to create tiling effect and space for joints between sheets can be left. Sheets of stone veneer can also be applied without grout joints (not recommended outdoors). Use epoxy grouts and flexible acrylic grouts.

GENERAL & SAFETY ADVICESUBSTRATEIn some indoor and most outdoor cases the issue of substrate expansion and contraction should be addressed. Use of flexible adhesives is recommended in those cases. Concrete and brick substrates should be allowed to set for at least 28 days before application of stone veneer. Hydrostatic value of pressure and vapour permeability should not exceed 1,36 kg per 92,9 m2 in 24 hours. In lime chloride test, moisture retention should stay below 2,5%

CONTENTS AND VARIATIONSThin stone veneer is a natural material made of slate which has back reinforcement of fiberglass and polyester resin. Stone veneer’s surface is natural stone. Variations in colour and texture are its feature which confirm it is a natural material. Sheets are made of natural stone and each one is different in colour and texture.

UV RADIATION AND TEMPERATURENatural stone surface of stone veneer, as most stone elements, acts as filtre of UV radiation and stays sunlight resistant for years. After fixing to surface it reduces thermal expansion and contraction of most construction materials. Stone veneer protects against cracks due to low and high temperatures. Temperature and humidity of the place where stone veneer is used should always be considered. In cases of outdoor use, thermal expansion should be taken into account.

SAFETY NOTESDue to the backing of stone veneer being made of fibreglass, adequate safety meaures should be observed. Always use gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask. NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator is recommended. When using a saw, always protect skin and eyes against fibreglass dust. When cutting or grinding stone veneer use tools with adequate filter and dust absorber.

Stone veneer complies with EU fire and heavy metal regulations. EN 15102:2007+A1:2011
