If you take a look at the Rotary calendar,it's easy to see where our priorities as anorganization lie. The Rotary year beginsin July; in August we mark Membership

Month, in September we celebrate NewGenerations, October is for vocationalservice, and so on, turning our attentionto different topics that are important inRotary.

s a great idea to do this, because it reminds us to talkbout subjects that we might otherwise overlook during ourusy Rotary year. But we all know that every topic on ourlendarfrom fellowship to our Foundationis impor-nt. All of them are part of what makes Rotary what it is,nd what makes all of us Rotarians.

Rotary, December is Family Month. Looking back on myars as a Rotarian, I have seen how important family is inotaryand how important Rotary can be to our families.

y wife, Corinna, chose to join Rotary just a few monthsgo, after many years as a Rotary spouse. All three of ourildren are also Rotarians. All of them joined their own

ub, in their own time. All of them have found unique inter-ts in Rotary. As we have watched them find their own

aths, we have been struck by how wonderful it is to have many members of our family involved in Rotary service.

otary gives us something good that we can all do to-

ether. With Rotary, we always have interesting things tok about at dinner. We are all involved in different ser-ce, in different clubs, so when we sit down together, wee talking about humanitarian needs of every kind, in

very part of the world. There is always something new toarn.

ur conversations are also a wonderful way to teach ourildren, through our own actions, what is really importantlife. They learn about what life is like in different parts ofe world, and how all of us have an obligation to help oth-s when we can. I can think of no better lessons to teach

ur families than the lessons of Rotary service.

hope that in this Rotary year, many of you will encourageur family members to join Rotary, Rotaract, or Interact.inging your family into Rotary doesn't just Light Up Ro-ryit lights up your own lives asell.

    Foundation Chairmans December Messa

In his inaugural address, U.S. PresidJohn F. Kennedy made this oftenquoted exhortation: "Ask not what yocountry can do for youask what y

    can do for your country."

The same sentiments could be applto the membership of Rotary.

Whether Rotary will survive or whether it will falter, whether our service will mean much to many or little tofew, whether Rotary is known with respect or seen as relic of days gone by, will be up to each and every Rotian.

There is so much to be done in our worldto educate

illiterate, feed the hungry, provide shelter to the homeOur world is still ill divided, and the gap is not shrinkinbetween the haves and the have-nots. But to whom mhas been given, much is expected.

The most important people in Rotary are not the direcof the Board or the trustees of our Rotary Foundation, the individual Rotarians working quietly in their clubs tassist those in communities who are less fortunate thathemselves, for whom they know the need is great. ThRotary at its finest: Rotarians identifying a need and responding to it.

For many, this is a special time of year. May it bring toeach of you the blessings that it offers.

As we Light Up Rotary, let us remember that the futureour Foundation is in your hands.

    NEW PROCESS EASIER FOR CLUBS

Beginning 1 January 2015, clubs will receive a one-page invoice that clearly states the amount owed

for subscription fees (only those collected by Rotary), membership dues, and outstanding balances.

Club officers will no longer need to recalculate bills, make adjustments, or fill out the eight-part semi-annual report (SAR).

    BETTER NEW MEMBER EXPERIENCE

To improve the new member experience, club secretaries are asked to register new and terminated

members within 30 days, or by 1 January or 1 July, whichever is sooner, and to report incoming club

officers by 1 February of each year. With more accurate membership records, Rotary can provide bet-

ter service to clubs. For example, the sooner a club secretary reports a new member, the sooner this

member will receive a welcome letter from Rotary and be eligible for all the privileges of membership.

GETTING STARTEDTo begin planning for these improvements, Rotary is asking club and district officers to share the new

invoicing and reporting policies with club members, and to prepare their clubs for monthly reporting.

Also, encourage your club members to immediately report changes to their membership status to club

officers, so this information can be updated in your club's membership records.

The existing SAR process will remain in place until 1 January 2015, and all the related materials will

continue to be available through the website.

The Object of RotaryFirst formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and

foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in par-

. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for ser-

. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's per-

    sonal, business, and community life;

. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,

and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional

persons united in the ideal of service.
