2 Temple Beth-El of Great Neck

Rabbi’s MessageWhat an amazing summer it has been! Joining the Temple Beth-El community in July was a real whirlwind I’m so grateful to the wonderful members of this community, who have warmly opened up their hearts, homes, and minds to welcome me in as the new Assistant Rabbi here at TBE!

This month, I’m very excited to get the Religious School up and

running—an important task that I could not do alone I’m very thankful to everyone who has been supportive: Rabbi Meir and Rabbi Tara; Cantor Vlad; Joy Allen; Debbie Bernstein, Randi Weiler and the entire Religious School committee; and the many volunteers who have participated over the summer to ensure a smooth transition into our school year For months, we’ve been getting ready to open our classrooms, and I absolutely cannot wait to have our hallways filled with young learners

This month, we will read from Parashat Shoftim, a passage of our book of Deuteronomy In Deuteronomy 16:20, we are taught “tzedek, tzedek tirdof: justice, justice you shall pursue” This simple three-word phrase sparks us to action, and inspires us to reach higher and work harder for a better world Temple Beth-El has long been an inspiring force for good in the world Rabbi Marla Feldman teaches, “Social justice is an essential component of Reform Judaism To be a Reform Jew is to hear the voice of the prophets in our head; to be engaged in the ongoing work of tikkun olam; to strive to improve the world in which we live; to be God’s partners in standing up for the voiceless and fixing what is broken in our society”

This community has an extraordinary legacy of dedication to the pursuit of justice, and I look forward to having the opportunity to participate in our efforts of tikkun olam, repairing the world

We know there is plenty broken in our society; together, as a TBE community, we can work together to be partners with God in advocacy and action

As a religious school community, we have the opportunity to learn important Jewish values, like the pursuit of justice I pray that our RS community will make a difference in this world, both in the way our students come to love being Jewish, and in the way they’ll apply Jewish values to the way they live, inside and outside of our Temple building

I can’t wait to meet all of our young learners and their families in the TBE Religious School It’s going to be a great year!

A Special MessageDear TBE Family,

How will you vote? We are weeks away from a most important decision The path we elect at that time, sets our course – many things depend on it and our choice depends on many things What are our values? What are our ethics? What choices will affect us today and tomorrow? What is the legacy it leaves for the next generation?

These questions are not meant to be about the presidential election, but they could be Our High Holidays are also around the corner If the American calendar points to the choices we will make, so too does our Jewish calendar How will we elect to spend our time and our energy? How do we want to best invest in ourselves and in our world? The spiritual path we elect for ourselves is the pressing question suggested by Jewish time

From George Washington to Barak Obama, from Rabbi Rudin to Rabbi Davidson to Rabbis Feldman, in our country, our synagogue and in our own lives – change is the only constant

What is the change we want to see in our world, country and our synagogue?

How will you affect change? How will you change? Imagine yourself holding a sacred Torah,

on Simchat Torah, surrounded by family and friends, what will your prayer be? What new and weighty challenge will you want to take on?

With Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year whispering to us, now is a good time to begin thinking about what will become of us, as a community and as individuals

As the late and beloved Elie Wiesel said, “…in Jewish history there are no coincidences”

Each and every one of us has a precious gift — an insight, question, or longing As individuals, what we bring is who we become The High Holidays are a quiet invitation to bring your gift Invest in your spark Add your flame to your community Engage in your community Practice and live your values and ethics Make them no accident or coincidence Be thoughtful Be deliberate

We are honored and grateful to have you as a part of Temple Beth-El family and to share this journey with you

We wish you a sweet and meaningful end of summer as we all begin to turn our thoughts to the High Holiday season around the corner

L’Shalom—in peace,

Rabbi Tara and Rabbi Meir FeldmanRonald Epstein, President

It is not hidden from you nor far off. It is not in the heavens that you should say: Who shall go up for us to the heavens?

Neither is it beyond the sea that you should say, ‘Who shall go over the sea for us?’ It is very close to you,

in your mouth and in your heart that you may do it. Deuteronomy 30:11-14

Shabbat@Home Continues This YearLast year’s Shabbat@Home initiative brought together hundreds of us, who shared Shabbat dinners in each other’s homes These Friday evening gatherings, outside the walls of the synagogue, created new friendships and strengthened old ones, enabling TBE members of all ages and backgrounds to deepen our connections with each other

What an amazing success and so very integral to the vision and aspirations of Project ToBE!

As we are looking ahead to the coming year, please save the following Fridays nights for Shabbat@Home: ▪ Friday, November 11 ▪ Friday, March 17

▪ Friday, May 19

Dinner conversation at our November 11 Shabbat will, in part, be focused on the topic of “forgiveness” leading up to our TBE Forgiveness Conference on Sunday afternoon, November 13

Please be in touch with Debbie Elkashash in the main office if you are interested in hosting, or being

hosted, for a Shabbat@Home this November 11 Contact Debbie at 487-0900 or at delkashash@tbegreatneckorg

More details coming in upcoming TBE Bulletins and email blasts

Men’s Discussion GroupResumes Sunday, September 11, 9:00 am

The men’s discussion group, open to all temple men age 55 and up, will hold its opening session on Sunday, September 11, 9:00 a.m. Our group meets once a month to discuss issues relevant to Judaism as reflected in our lives and experiences We are not a book group, but use books, magazines, newspapers and the like as resources to enhance our discussions

Our opening topic for September 11 will be, “Anti-Semitism and the Presidential Election” This is not about any specific candidates, but the socio-economic issues of the last two decades, fueling the anger of large segments of the voting public, allowing underlying Anti-Semitism (and racism) to rise to the surface

We encourage all men 55 and over who have not been receiving our invitation emails to call the temple office at 487-0900, ext 110, and give your name and email address (phone number if you are not on email) so we can add you to our invitation list

The first two sessions are at Temple Beth-El, Sundays September 11 and October 9, at 9:00 am We usually end by 10:30 am Bagels and cream cheese, assorted baked goods, coffee and tea provided Any questions, please call the temple number above and we will contact you

Brotherhood NewsI hope everyone had a wonderful summer! Like the rest of the congregation, Brotherhood members spent the past few months at the beach, in the pool, on vacation, etc However, we did get together for some very special events

On July 10, Brotherhood hosted yet another annual St Aloysius July Fourth Barbeque at St Aloysius Church Nearly a dozen Brotherhood members, along with Cantor Lapin, grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken for approximately one-hundred guests Past President Allan Lowenkron masterfully manned the grill station for over two hours We also served some tasty salads, corn, desserts, and even a little pizza Due to the overwhelming generosity of local merchants, and temple members, guests not only ate well, but were able to bring home a great deal of leftovers As always, we had a great time serving our fellow Great Neck neighbors Special kudos to Steve Koteen for all his legwork collecting food donations and organizing the event

Because one can never get enough barbecue, my family and I hosted the annual Brotherhood Members Barbeque on Tuesday, July 12 We had a lovely turnout of members and their guests We were also grateful to have our new Rabbi Muhlbaum and Cantor Lapin stop by It was a great opportunity for us to get better acquainted with our wonderful new clergy

Again, I hope everyone had a lovely summer Very soon, the days will shorten and the temperatures will descend, and the call of the shofar will bring us together to reflect on the past year This Fall, please keep an eye out for the many upcoming Brotherhood events and, as always, remember to bring nonperishable food for the blue bins in the temple lobby Food insecurity sadly knows no vacation

Sincerely,

Steven HopePresident, Brotherhood of Temple Beth-El of Great Neck

TBE’s Brotherhood hosted a barbeque at St. Aloysius on July 10. Over 100 people were fed, and food was also sent to the homes of needy families.

YOM KIPPEROCTOBER 12No one in Great Neck should go to bed hungry!

Throughout the High Holidays TBE will collect food and donations, particularly on Yom Kippur morning.

Please bring the following necessities: ● Non-refrigerated milk ● Cans of tuna or chicken ● Beans, both dry and

Adult Education: Growing Together—A Lifelong Calling

Inspire through purpose—

Who amongst us does not

want to grow? Our High

Holiday season arrives,

inspiring us to go deeper—

both in spirit and in deed.

All year round, this is the

mission of TBE and ToBE,

to provide each and every

one of us rich and varied

opportunities to learn, grow,

and to discover our purpose.

Forgiveness ConferenceApart from the High Holidays, the centerpiece of our fall calendar will be our Conference on Forgiveness on the afternoon of Sunday, November 13

The diverse Great Neck community will fill our main sanctuary: Orthodox, Conservative and Reform Jews, Chinese and Koreans, our Christian neighbors, and, as well, our Muslim brothers and sisters on Long Island

Our conference will feature Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Buddhist survivor-witnesses (like our dear friends from Charleston) as well as prominent clergy from each faith tradition The conference will address two questions: What does each faith tradition say about a forgiveness granted that was never earned? What does each faith tradition say about the anger and bitterness and resentment that so many of us carry around every day of our lives?

We will hear stories of forgiveness from powerful role models who have suffered terribly and, through their response to evil, have become extraordinary spiritual teachers and leaders

Fall LearningTorah Study, Saturday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m.Come join in an engaging and ever-evolving conversation about the weekly Torah portion, led by our rabbis and cantor No previous knowledge required as we approach the Biblical text from all angles, and leave with nourishment for the intellect

Classes:Our Fall lineup begins with two learning opportunities lead jointly by Rabbi Muhlbaum and Cantor Lapin Together, they will focus on central musical and liturgical themes of the High Holidays Don’t miss this opportunity to get to know our amazing new clergy ▪ Thursday, September 15, from 12:00

to 1:30 p.m. ▪ Thursday, September 22, from 7:30

to 9:00 p.m.

SelichotAs the final Sabbath of this year departs, Rabbi Bill Berk from Jerusalem will speak, supported by Cantor Lapin, with melodies and prayers evoking the themes of repentance and forgiveness and enabling us to prepare for the new year ▪ Saturday, September 24, from 9:00

to 11:00 p.m.

HavdallahShortly after the High Holidays, we will come together to study selected texts from Talmud and Midrash and learn, with Cantor Lapin, music from various traditions related to forgiveness Wine and cheese will be served and the evening will conclude with havdallah ▪ October 29, from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

On Being, “Opening the animating questions at the center of human life…”Rabbi Tara will lead three sessions through selected podcasts from Krista Tippett’s award-winning public radio conversation ▪ Thursday, November 3, from 7:30 to

9:00 p.m. ▪ Thursday, November 10, from 7:30

TBE Sisterhood Writing ClubNew Group Being Formed

For two years, a small group of Sisterhood women have been meeting once a month in each other’s homes, enjoying the (unexpected and new, for most of us) pleasure of writing and sharing one’s writing with supportive, non-judgmental friends

We take turns preparing three prompts, which are questions or topics (“how Christmas makes me feel” or, “the teacher I’ll always remember”) quotations ( lines of poetry or prayers) or even objects ( a painting, or a tea pot) After writing for ten minutes in response to the prompt, we read what we have written and never fail to be fascinated, inspired, or amused, by everyone’s different ideas and thoughts We know what we say and write is kept confidential and we hope to keep meeting for a very long time

There has been interest expressed in a second writing club and several of us are happy to help another small group of women get started Please contact Sandie Antar at sandie3@aolcom if you are interested in joining the new group or have questions

Sisterhood NewsThe women of Sisterhood are planning an exciting year of programming All TBE women are invited to attend our lively and interesting gatherings

We began the 2016–2017 year with a lovely paid-up membership event at the home of Beth Hochstein Forty members of Sisterhood, along with Cantor Vladimir Lapin and Rabbi Elle Muhlbaum, gathered for a poolside dinner and casual conversation

Our Rosh Chodesh programming begins on Monday, September 12 at 7:45 pm with a book discussion led by Sandy Lubert We will be reading The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman This novel, from The New York Times bestselling author, is a story of forbidden love, set on the tropical island of St Thomas, about the extraordinary woman who gave birth to painter Camille Pissarro—the Father of Impressionism

Sisterhood dates for the coming year are as follows: ▪ Monday, September 12: Book Discussion facilitated by Sandy Lubert: The Marriage

of Opposites by Alice Hoffman ▪ Thursday, October 20: Rosh Chodesh in the TBE Sukkah ▪ Thursday, December 8: Book Discussion facilitated by Sandy Lubert: All I Love and

Know by Judith Frank ▪ Thursday, January 5: Rosh Chodesh program ▪ Monday, January 30: Rosh Chodesh program ▪ Thursday, March 2: Book Discussion facilitated by Sandy Lubert: Marjorie

Morningstar by Herman Wouk ▪ Sunday, March 26: Sisterhood one day Retreat ▪ Monday, May 1: Book Discussion facilitated by Sandy Lubert, book TBA ▪ Thursday, June 1: Rosh Chodesh

In addition, we will be continuing our Girls’ Night Out Dinners, dates and locations to be announced

For those of you who have paid your Sisterhood dues of $50, we thank you If you have not yet sent your dues in, please support Sisterhood with your dues contribution Sisterhood funds not only support our programming but help to support a range of TBE needs Please send your check payable to TBE and note “Sisterhood” on the memo line

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Sisterhood at sisterhoodtbegn@gmailcom

Looking forward to a wonderful year!

Ina Kupferberg & Judi Rosenzweig

“Judaism begins in the home... Go Online to Stay Up-to-DateThe Temple Bulletin is only one of many ways to keep informed of what’s happening at Temple Beth-El

Twice each week, we send an e-mail message with a calendar of events for the coming days If you haven’t already given your e-mail address to the temple office, that’s a good reason to do so

Our website, wwwtbegreatneckorg, is full of detailed information about all aspects of TBE Because of early Bulletin deadlines and because plans change, we can’t promise that the Bulletin will always contain the latest information However, the website calendar is always up-to-date

Our Facebook page, http://wwwfacebookcom/TBEGreatNeck, contains reminders, news flashes, photos and information that sometimes can’t be found anywhere else You don’t have to be a Facebook user to view our Facebook page; just view it as you would do with any other website If you are a Facebook user, we suggest that you “like” our page By doing that, you’ll be sure to receive our posts whenever you log onto Facebook

Flower Delivery Volunteers NeededA few hours of your time, three or four Saturdays a year, will give you membership in the Floral Delivery Mitzvah Corps—a dedicated group of women who brighten the day of convalescent or bereaved congregants by delivering pulpit flowers to them You will be surprised at how good it makes YOU feel! For information, please call Harriet Feldmann at 718-225-2133 This project is sponsored by The Caring Committee Thank you

Updating Your Email Address“I’m not getting emails from the temple” or “I don’t seem to get all the emails from the temple” We, your Membership Committee, want to help The best way to start is making sure the temple office has your correct or updated email address You may have changed providers (like Gmail, Yahoo, and AOL) Or, you have more than one email address, but prefer one specific email address for temple communication Perhaps, your email address was related to your employer and you’ve switched companies

To update, please send an email to Joy Palevsky, Office Manager, jpalevsky@tbegreatneckorg
