As subscribers’ bandwidth demands increase, and the competitive landscape becomes more intense, cable operators are evolving their Hybrid Fiber-Coax (HFC) network architecture. Distributed Access Architecture (DAA), with Remote PHY (R-PHY) and Remote MAC/PHY deployment options brings Ethernet/IP closer to the subscriber, and unlocks potential for higher DOCSIS speeds, but also brings new deployment challenges.

While many trends and network evolution strategies are available, carriers will be evolving their HFC (hybrid fiber-coax) architecture based on market conditions, customer bandwidth demands and competitive landscape. Because there is no one-size fits all strategy, different upgrade paths will be chosen depending on the type of deployment (greenfield vs. brownfield) and the serving area requirements (low vs. medium or high density). This will likely leave engineers and technicians to deploy and maintain heterogeneous networks for many years to come.

VeEX’s product portfolio provides the tools that accompany the architecture’s migration, from traditional HFC networks to DAA:

• Tools for the legacy Coax plant with SLM, sweep and leakage• DOCSIS 3.0/DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM testing support for legacy and new installations• Tools that automate the entire process with home and business birth certificates• Complete set of optical products to test the fiber access: CWDM/DWDM OTDR, OSA

and Optical Channel Checker and Fiber Loss• Centralized and cloud based Monitoring for RF (Return and Forward), MPEG,

DAA/R-PHY NETWORKVeEX’s optical test solutions are optimized for all com-munication networks and are well suited for the OSP.

Page 4: R-You Ready for R-PHY?...networks for many years to come. VeEX’s product portfolio provides the tools that accompany the architecture’s migration, from traditional HFC networks

1588v2/PTP and SyncE Master and Slave Clock• IEEE 1588v2/PTP and SyncE/ITU-T G.8261 standards • Master Clock and Slave clock emulation • IEEE 1588v2/PTP protocol monitor & decode, and PDV analysis • Wander measurement and MTIE/TDEV analysis • ESMC SSM generation, monitoring, and decoding Clock Wander & Phase Measurements • TIE (wander) or Timing Error (absolute phase error) differences

between the signal present at the test port and the external reference or the optional internal free-running or GNSS-disciplined Atomic clock.

Built-in MTIE/TDEV Wander Analysis • Provides further post-processing of clock stability data, such as

MTIE and TDEV• Real-time or post analysis modes • Standard MTIE and TDEV masks • MTIE and TDEV results and mask export to CSV • Direct PDF report generation to USB

Migration to DAA and R-PHY requires frequency and phase synchronization. The accuracy of the 1588v2/PTP Slave clock recovery is highly dependent on the transport network’s characteristics in terms of PDV (Packet Delay Variation) and asymmetry (delay variation between the upstream and downstream path). Evaluation of the transport network’s characteristics as well as slave synchronization performance are important field tests that require equipment capable of full protocol support as well as high accuracy self contained clock references. The RXT-1200 platform is optionally equipped with GNSS receiver and Chip-scale Atomic Clock reference for frequency, phase and wander measurements, or other time sensitive tests like one-way-delay measurements.

The DAA migration creates a new challenge as timing synchronization needs to be achieved between the core and the nodes. VeEX’s solutions bring the capability to verify the integrity of the timing prior to deployment or for troubleshooting with handheld field test sets equipped with high accuracy self-contained clock references.
