Issue 12 Autumn Term - 1st December 2017

On Thursday, a group of children from Years 3 and 4 took part in a dodgeball festival at the Howard. The children enjoyed themselves and showed the Sports Values we have been promoting in school, in particular teamwork and respect. Thanks to Ultimate Coaching for attending and Miss McGuigan for organising it.

Thank you to everyone for sending in so many colourful Jolly Jars yesterday. As you know, each Jolly Jar earned a house point and the decorations on the jars were quite spectacular! The winner of the Jolly Jars was Roebuck with 120 points, Ark Royal with 116, Tyger with 115 and Falcon with 74. Well done everyone!

Also yesterday, Year 3 sang beautifully at Squires Garden Centre. The children had the opportunity to visit Santa in his grotto and parents enjoyed some mulled wine and mince pies. The collection for the Brain Tumour Charity raised just short of £100. Thanks for going, Mrs Hamilton, Miss Rogers, Mrs Hollingshurst, Mrs Perrin and Mrs K Young.

Year 2 travelled back in time to the Victorian era today. Thanks for providing such appropriate costumes parents and thanks to the staff who found it quite a challenge to stay in role! Learning history through drama is always effective and we find that it has a huge impact on the children’s historical understanding.

Please remember that Year 4 children all need swimming kit on a Monday afternoon. Last week 5 children had none.

It is extremely cold now and there are still children in school without a coat. They children are outside for an hour at lunchtime and can get very cold without that extra layer.

For the Reverse Advent Challenge, see the flyer on page 10. We will be having two boxes here at school; one in the lobby area by the school office and one in the staffroom. Donations of items such as soup and dried pasta gratefully received.

If you leave a message on our automated absence line to say that your child is unwell, please do tell us in what way they are unwell; cough, cold, sore throat. We ask for this information to monitor levels and reasons for any potential outbreaks of a particular disorder, e.g. sickness and diarrhoea.

TEACHER-LED CLUBS FOR THIS TERM HAVE NOW FINISHED. THE MAJORITY OF THE EXTERNAL PROVISION CLUBS ARE STILL RUNNING BUT PLEASE DO

CHECK THE CLUB LIST ON THE WEBSITE FOR FINAL DATES.

On Monday of this week a car parked across the driveway of a resident in

Northcote Crescent. It doesn't really matter whether the

car was parked there for 5 minutes or 5 hours as the resident couldn't have

driven off from their drive at any time.

Please park with courtesy and consideration for our

neighbours!

A New Home for The Raleigh

In the centre pages of the November/December issue of The Horsley Directory,

there is a letter and a very brief questionnaire about a new home for

The Raleigh School. The letter and questionnaire can also be found on pages 4 & 5 of

this newsletter. Please do take a couple of minutes to complete the

questionnaire and return it to school or pop it in one of the drop boxes, in

Quaich, Goose, Bishopsmead Post Office, St Martin’s or St Mary’s Church,

The Meadows Nursery or Footprints Nursery. If we can gather evidence

that the residents see the sense of this plan we will go back to GBC to appeal

their decision. We now have a waiting list of 108….

Attendance

Last week, 24 lates were recorded, 15 more than the previous week and 8 children were absent due to medical appointments.

It is really important to arrive at school ON TIME. Polite reminder; the gate opens

at 08:40 and closes at 08:50. We deduct one house point for every late mark that a child receives.

This term, to date, 208 children have 100% attendance. Well done to those children!

Yr 2 Carol Singing at Limegrove Care Home on 14th December.

To date we have only had 10 permission out of the 60 in the year group. Please return to school office asap so that we can ensure

that all the children have transport to and from this event.

May we please ask again for parents not to park in the staff car park.

Parents continue to drive in, park or just wait, blocking the entrance and then reverse out into the road. By 4.30pm when the

majority of afterschool clubs finish it is very dark and people walking on the pavement and crossing the school entrance cannot easily be seen.

Year 4 Swimming for Spring 2018 Term

Please return the swimming permission slip for the Spring

Term 2018 as soon as possible as we need to put together the rota of

volunteer helpers. Payment is due today please.

We were delighted to receive the British Council's

International Award at an award ceremony in central London

on Monday night. Mr Tuckett was presented with the award by our

local MP, Sir Paul Beresford.

The award recognises The Raleigh's commitment to

internationalism and to developing our children as rounded

global citizens. This international work has included communication

by email, Skype and letter with schools around the world, as

well as shared curriculum projects, for example the sharing of

weather data, as well as diaries of life in a day of each school.

It has also included face-to-face meetings such as visits to

penfriends in France and visits to our school, for example by

students from the Kampala Children's Centre.

Well done to the International Award Team, as well as the wider

staff and children who have all contributed to this achievement!

RUDOLPH’S FESTIVE FAIR - FRIDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2017

Thank you all very, very much for your fantastic donations

over both mufti days, all the soft toys and items donated for

our Christmas market and family stall. The fair is only a week

away and it’s all coming together!

Last day for any donations is Monday 4th December please.

On the day of the fair, don’t forget to send in your child’s

money in a NAMED purse. We recommend between £5-£10.

Come armed with a shopping list - prices are much lower than

buying in the shops so hopefully everyone will go home with a

full bag. There will be gifts for everyone as well as jolly jars,

soft toys, tinsel dip, raffle, some great games, glitter tat-

toos, our Christmas Market and fab Pocket Money stall.

The Key Stage 2 Outdoor Carol Concert

All children should arrive at school

between 6:00 and 6:15

The Concert will begin at 6:30 and last approximately 30 minutes

The Friends of The Raleigh will be selling mulled wine and mince pies from 6:00 in the playground

The Concert will take place ‘whatever the

weather’. Children need to be in school uniform with a warm coat, scarf, hat, gloves and tinsel!

The children will also need a electric tea light and these will be on sale in the playground
