Hi Everybody,Learning is springing up everywhere at PVPV/Rawlings! Since returning from break, we’ve celebrated our 100th day of school, hosted the State’s First Lady Ann Scott for classroom read-alouds, and helped our students and parents better understand cyber safety with a full day of assemblies. You can see Ms. Huston’s 1st-grade class digging into “decomposition” below. Ms. Huston received a grant from the Ponte Vedra Public Education Foundation to help students learn about environmental stewardship by studying how soil changes when various substances – from bananas to newspapers – are buried in a worm compost bin. Even the worms will be recycled, and be added to the Kindergarten gardens so lovingly tended by our local master gardeners! I so appreciate the creativity of our teachers and dedication of our staff who fill every day with rich learning for our students. Of course, we couldn’t do it without our parents, community partners and PTO, who so generously support every grade level with time and resources. Your Loving Principal, Caty Van Housen

On January 9, 2018, the St. Johns County School District School Board conducted a public hearing to receive comment from the community related to the final list of

recommendations for science instructional resources for this year’s adoption. Committees composed of teachers, district content experts, parents and community members compiled

the lists. Please visit http://www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/media/about/textbooks/adoption/ to view the final recommendation selections.

Board action on the final adoption of science instructional materials is scheduled to take place at the School Board meeting on February 13, 2018. If you would like access to

SUMMER MARINE SCIENCE PROGRAM

Parents,Applications for the summer Marine Science Program will be passed out by science teachers at all schools during the week of February 12th. Applications will be due back to science teachers by March 5th. Applications can also be downloaded at any time from the website prior to April 13th at http://www-grms.stjohns.k12.fl.us/ and click on the Marine Science link. The link also will have a complete day by day curriculum for each grade level, parent information, and a video from last year’s program.

This summer program is available to all students currently in grades five through seven and has been sponsored by the school district since 1982. Three eight day sessions are held at Gamble Rogers Middle School with bus transportation provided. The dates for the three sessions this summer will be May 29st through June 7th, June 11th through June 21st , and June 25th through July 6th. Small classes of 12-14 students are separated by grade level. All instructors in the program are St. Johns County School District teachers.

The Marine Science Program is a carefully designed experience for responsible students who are interested in learning about our local marine environments. Learning is “hands on” in the field with students kayaking, canoeing, boating, hiking, snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, surfing, SUP, (stand up paddleboarding), etc. Specific grade level activities and curriculum are attached to the applications and are also available from the website.

Attention Parents/Guardians of 5th Grade Students!!

In preparation for middle school registration, we will be sending home a School Registration Form soon. When you receive this document, please sign, date and return along with current residency documents to the front office, as soon as possible.

This information must be updated before a middle school schedule will be released and will be kept in the student’s file, which will automatically transfer to the next school of record.

Jump Rope for Heart is a community service project to raise funds for the American Heart Association. JRFH will teach your child the importance of heart-healthy habits-a foundation for the rest of his/her life. This service-learning program will also share with your child the inspirational stories of children who have been touched by heart disease while they raise funds to help kids like them, and save and improve all lives.

Our event date will be February 5-9, 2018. All collections will be due by that week and can be turned in to Coach Harden or the front office. This will be for grades 3-5 only. Your son/daughter will be receiving a collection envelope during PE with further information about the program! We look forward to your child’s participation and thank you in advance for your support! Happy New Year!!!!

If your child will not be attending their ENRICHMENT CAMP, you should contact the Camp directly and also the front office of your child’s building. It would be a huge help if you would remind your student in the morning when they have a Camp after school. You might also want to email or send a note to their teacher so she knows where to send them. IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE
