Hello Friends!

We are excited to begin the 2019-2020 school year

here at PVPV/Rawlings. I want to extend a special

thank you to those families who were able to attend

the “Meet the Principal” event last week and to all of

you for making me feel so welcome here for the last

two weeks. Our theme for our entire school this

year is Work Hard, Be Kind, and Be Awesome! We

want to continue the tradition of academic

excellence that PVPV/Rawlings is known for by

working hard. Working hard means showing up on

time, completing assignments promptly, and giving

100% effort while here at school. Being kind simply

means to follow the pillars of character of

trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness,

caring, and citizenship. This means a renewed

focus on how we behave here at PVPV/Rawlings

and how important it is to be kind to one another.

Finally, being awesome is a chance to celebrate the

pursuit of excellent. We want our students and staff

to go above and beyond by overcoming obstacles

such as reading the SSYRA books, competing at

high levels in sports and competitions,

demonstrating leadership, and just generally being

awesome.

Be on the lookout for a message from your new

teacher on August 8th between 4-6pm so you can

come to Meet the Teacher on August 9th from 8am

to 11am to see your new classroom. Also, parents,

if you’re looking for a way to “Be Awesome,” joining

PTO in the cafeteria at either school during Meet

the Teacher would be an excellent way to start!

Thank you all for your support and we look forward

to an excellent year.

Jesse Gates, originally an upstate New Yorker, earned his BA degree in

Philosophy from the University of Virginia in 1998, and his Master of Science degree in Elementary Education from Syracuse University in 1999. Upon graduation, he spent 10 years teaching fourth grade at Sam D. Panter Elementary School in Paulding County, a suburb of Atlanta. While teaching in Atlanta, he earned his Educational Specialist degree in Educational and Counseling Psychology with an emphasis on children’s mental health from the University of Missouri. He was named the Sam D. Panter Elementary Teacher of the Year and the Paulding County Teacher of the Year in 2006. The following year, he was named one of three Georgia Teacher of the Year Finalists. In 2008, Jesse served on the Georgia Secretary of Education’s Advisory Council where he helped shape several leadership initiatives for the state. In 2009, Jesse moved to St. Johns County and taught fourth grade at PVPV/Rawlings for a year before becoming an Instructional Technology Program Specialist for SJCSD for three years. During his time as an Instructional Technology Program Specialist, he served as the chairperson for the Florida Association of Media Educator’s (FAME) Finance Committee and also served on the FAME board until being named Assistant Principal at Hartley Elementary School in 2014. Jesse successfully graduated with his Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Florida in December of 2015. His dissertation, A Public Policy Analysis of Social Networking in Florida Public Schools, made headlines at UF News, news4jax, and other local and state media outlets. He then spent three years as assistant principal at Landrum Middle School. Married to a fellow St. Johns County educator, he and his wife Melissa have four children. He is excited to return to PVPV/Rawlings as the new principal.

PVPV/Rawlings Rocks!

“Rent the Rock”

The Spirit Rock is a great way to send a

message for all to see!

Whether you would like to wish a student a

happy birthday, show appreciation for a favorite

teacher, or just show school spirit, our

PVPV/Rawlings rock is the perfect place for you!

PVPV/Rawlings Rock Guidelines

Reservations are made online through Sign Up Genius, located on the school PTO website.

Rent the rock for $35/day. All reservation dates are listed; slots will not be modified. Reservations

are processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Keep in mind that the earlier you make your

reservation, the more likely you are to get your desired date. There are only 180 school days, and

we have about 1050 students, so please be understanding if you don’t get your desired date☺.

Any family may rent the rock for up to three days per semester. These days may be in a row or

separate days throughout the semester. All artwork painted on the rock must be in good taste and

may not contain any foul or derogatory language, religious, political, or offensive statement or

symbols. The messages or designs must be positive! School administration has the right to paint

over and revoke further painting privileges for individuals who do not abide by these rules.

Families need to provide their own paint and supplies. Spray paint may be used to cover the

previous message. Use only “standard” latex or water-based paint on the rock. Painting of school

property, besides the rock, is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, sidewalks, asphalt,

lamp posts, or buildings. Any damage to the surrounding area or building will result in financial

responsibility for repairs to the responsible party.

Painting of the rock may occur anytime between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the day before your rental.

For instance, if you are renting the rock for Tuesday, August 21, you may paint the rock anytime

between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Monday, August 20. If you are renting the rock for Monday, you will

need to paint the rock the Friday before between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

In the event of inclement weather, please plan on painting with an umbrella in hand. For severe

weather that prohibits afternoon painting, you may paint from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. on the day you rent

the rock. The PTO will not give refunds on rock reservations. If you are unable to paint the rock

on your scheduled date, please try to trade with another family. PLEASE MARK YOUR

CALENDARS!!!

There are no trash cans or water supply available, so bring appropriate bags to clean up

afterwards. Paint cans are not allowed to be put in dumpsters on school property.

The renting of the rock runs on the honor system; we hope everyone respects the guidelines set

by the school administration. We cannot wait to see all the amazing artwork displayed on the

Spirit Rock throughout the year! Occasionally, we will post images on our PTO Facebook page

and tweet out fun rocks throughout the year!

DAILY ARRIVAL SCHEDULE8:15 First Bell – Students report to class8:20 Morning Announcements aired via closed-circuit8:25 Tardy BellStudent supervision does not start until 8:05. Students are not allowed on campus

prior to 8:05 unless they are Extended Day students. The car drop-off/pick-up area is located at the front of the school. Do not leave your car unattended in this area.

DAILY DISMISSAL SCHEDULE2:45 Dismissal on Mon., Tues., Thurs., & Fri.1:45 Dismissal every Wednesday

Bus Riders – Students riding the bus will be dismissed by a bell at 2:45 (1:45 on Wed.).Bikers – For their safety, bikers are dismissed at 2:55. When bicycles are ridden to school, they must be walked on campus, parked and locked in the bike rack located near the cafeteria at PVPV or the flagpole at Rawlings. Car Line – Students picked up in car line are dismissed at 2:45. Every family is provided two display cards with student and teacher name, along with a hanger for the rear view mirror. Display the card in the front window to expedite pick-up.

We ask Parents to not park and walk to the school entrance to retrieve children; but stay in their cars. Having a dual campus allows us to have two very quick car lines, compared

to all other schools in the district. For the safety of all students, we must ask that no parents wait around the school entrance. Those parents who walk from their home to wait for their child must wait in a designated area for their students to be released at 2:55. This is to allow the car line and busses more efficient egress and to keep the families safe.

Kindergarten & First grade students are dismissed from the PVPV building. Second grade students – along with 3rd through 5th – are dismissed from the Rawlings building. If you have children at both buildings, we ask that the older student walk to the PVPV car pick-up area to meet the K/1st grade sibling.

Walkers – Crossing guards are on duty each morning and afternoon for students who walk or ride bicycles to school. For safety reasons, students should not cross A1A at any other point. Please instruct your child and ensure adherence to the crossing schedule 8:00-8:45 AM and 2:30-3:15 PM.

School Arrival and DismissalFollowing guidelines created for the safety of all children

is most critical during the “comings” and “goings” of school. Please read

and follow these updated guidelines. It takes each of us doing our part

to move more than 1,000 children on and off campus in mere minutes.

Greetings PVPV/Rawlings Families,

Welcome back to school! I hope everyone has had a safe and "turtle-y awesome" summer!

It is hard to believe it is time to kick off the 2019-2020 school year! I am excited to serve as your PTO president again this year! We have been enthusiastically planning for this school year and hope you join us in the excitement. Whatever event you attend, whether it be Turtle Trot, Spring Carnival, Book Fair, Dads and Donuts, Book Club, or Family Movie Night, we are positive you will catch a wave of the turtle spirit! The PTO, Parent and Teacher Organization, bridges the funding gaps between what the state provides and the amount of money it requires to keep PVPV/Rawlings a school of excellence! The more support we receive from all of our families, the more enriching curricula and support we will be able to provide in August for the teachers and students!

We truly could not be the school we are without families like you!In gratitude for your support, each family will receive the weekly electronic newsletter, a car magnet, and the children in your family will receive one piece of pizza, dessert, and a drink at our Back to School "Shell-ebration" that will be Friday, August 16 at 6:00 p.m. This event will be a family movie and popcorn night in the Rawlings Cafeteria. As your PTO President, I am thrilled at the possibilities we can do together with everyone's support! Because Together Everyone Achieves More, I hope this year everyone will support TEAM Turtle so the tradition of excellence at PVPV/Rawlings continues. Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much! Please visit either cafeteria at Meet the Teacher to support TEAM Turtle or visit our website at https://pvpvrawlingspto.membershiptoolkit.com to support the school today! Should anyone have any questions, comments, or helpful suggestions, I gladly welcome you to email me at [email protected]. I look forward to a successful 2019-2020 school year!Warmest Regards, Leslie BohsaliPTO President 2019-2020
