In2003, Little Shop was revived onBroadway and in 2007 it was revivedon the West End. It is currently one ofthe most produced shows in Ameri-can High Schools. In 1986, Ashmanwrote and directed the Broadway mu-sical, Smile, music by Marvin Ham-lisch. Little appreciated at the time,Smile is now considered a lost gem ofmusical theater and is performed byhigh school students around the U.S.Turning his talents toward film, Ash-man was pivotal in the renaissance ofDisney animated musicals and in thedevelopment of Disney’s The LittleMermaid (Producer and Lyrics),Beauty and the Beast (Executive Pro-ducer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics),all with music by Alan Menken. Ash-man’s contributions to the revival ofclassic Disney animated musicalswere perhaps best expressed by thededication to the film Beauty and theBeast: “To our friend Howard, whogave a mermaid her voice and a beasthis soul. He will be forever missed.”Ashman’s awards include two Oscars, two Golden Globes, four Grammys, aDrama Desk and a London EveningStandard. THEATRE BY THE SEA, which is on theNational Register of Historic Places, has had many incarnations over theyears. The Tyler family purchased theproperty in the early ‘20s. After AliceTyler was left a widow with threeyoung children, she ran the propertyas a summer camp for girls. When thedepression hit, she decided to createjobs and provide a future for her chil-dren by turning the barn into a the-atre. The 300-seat theatre opened onAugust 7, 1933 with a productioncalled Strictly Dynamite. That initialseason lasted four weeks and featuredfour different plays, one of which wastaken to New York. In 1938, a Yale Co-operative took over. Then, on Septem-ber 2, a hurricane hit. The back wall ofthe theatre caved in and the stageroof was blown off. During the repairs, the theater was expanded to includea balcony. The newly enlarged theatreoperated through 1941 and then wentdark during the war. In 1946, the the-atre’s most glamorous and star-filledperiod began. The theatre becamewhat is referred to as a “star-system”house opening with a show calledDream Girl which starred Judy Holli-day. Other headliners who werebrought in were Tallulah Bankhead,Mae West, Groucho Marx and MarlonBrando. Following the 1958 season, the property was sold to the Bontecoufamily, who leased it sporadically forseveral years, and by 1966 there wereplans to tear down the theatre. Uponhearing that the theatre was to be de-stroyed, Tommy Brent, who had previ-ously worked as a publicist for thetheatre, returned and saved the the-ater from demolition. His first show

opened on June 23, 1967 and he ranthe theatre successfully for 22 years. In1988, FourQuest Entertainment, which consisted of Laura Harris, (whohad previously worked at the theatrefor 11 summers), Renny Serre andRichard Ericson, came on board. Fol-lowing extensive renovations,FourQuest reopened the theater inthe spring of 1989 and continued pro-ducing high quality summer theaterin Matunuck until the fall of 2003. Thetheatre went dark once again until2007, when entrepreneur Bill Hanneypurchased the property and, with pro-ducing partners, successfullymounted a production of A FunnyThing Happened on the Way to theForum, just six weeks later, reopeningthe historic theatre on August 8, 2007.Theatre By The Sea continues to pro-duce a successful four-musical sub-scription season annually.
