THEATRE BY THE SEA, which is onthe National Register of HistoricPlaces, has had many incarnationsover the years. The Tyler familypurchased the property in theearly ‘20s. After Alice Tyler was lefta widow with three young chil-dren, she ran the property as asummer camp for girls. When thedepression hit, she decided to cre-ate jobs and provide a future forher children by turning the barninto a theatre. The 300-seat the-atre opened on August 7, 1933with a production called StrictlyDynamite. That initial seasonlasted four weeks and featuredfour different plays, one of whichwas taken to New York. In 1938, aYale Cooperative took over. Then,on September 2, a hurricane hit.

The back wall of the theatre cavedin and the stage roof was blownoff. During the repairs, the theaterwas expanded to include a bal-cony. The newly enlarged theatreoperated through 1941 and thenwent dark during the war. In 1946,the theatre’s most glamorous andstar-filled period began. The the-atre became what is referred to asa “star-system” house openingwith a show called Dream Girlwhich starred Judy Holliday. Otherheadliners who were brought inincluded Tallulah Bankhead, MaeWest, Groucho Marx, and MarlonBrando. Following the 1958 sea-son, the property was sold to theBontecou family, who leased itsporadically for several years, andby 1966 there were plans to teardown the theatre. Upon hearingthat the theatre was to be de-stroyed, Tommy Brent, who hadpreviously worked as a publicistfor the theatre, returned andsaved the theater from demoli-tion. His first show opened on

June 23, 1967 and he ran the the-atre successfully for 22 years. In1988, FourQuest Entertainment, which consisted of Laura Harris,(who had previously worked at thetheatre for 11 summers), RennySerre and Richard Ericson, cameon board. Following extensive ren-ovations, FourQuest reopened thetheater in the spring of 1989 andcontinued producing high qualitysummer theater in Matunuck untilthe fall of 2003. The theatre wentdark once again until 2007, whenentrepreneur Bill Hanney pur-chased the property and, withproducing partners, successfullymounted a production of A FunnyThing Happened on the Way tothe Forum, just six weeks later, re-opening the historic theatre onAugust 8, 2007. Theatre By The Seacontinues to annually produce asuccessful four-musical subscrip-tion season along with a children’stheatre series.
