Dear Supporters of Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation:

As the year 2012 came to a close, we at Sentinels of Freedom took a moment to reflect on the severely wounded and injured Veterans who came into our program, those who graduated, and all the people we met along the way.

We continue to be thankful for the support you’ve provided to Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation, whether financially, through mentorship or being our “advocate” in spreading the word about our organization to your friends, families and acquaintances. We rely on your willingness and dedication to our mission so that we can continue to bring new Veterans into our program and expand the numbers that we serve.

We talk about Plan A and Plan B. Plan A is continuing on our course, bringing 15 – 25 new Veterans into the program each year; plan B is growing to 50 – 100 new Veterans each year. We’ll continue to need your help in achieving both of these goals.

The severely wounded and injured Veterans who enter into our program excel, become independent and self-reliant. We watch them realize their dreams which they didn’t think were possible when we first met them. These young men and women, in many ways, are like our own young adult children and we watch them mature as individuals and find their way in this world. It is a privilege to be part of their lives. This is why we want to be able to give more Veterans the same opportunity for success.

The drawdown of troops is taking place over the next year. However, we also know that there will be another war, in another part of the world, just as history has always shown. For this reason, we need to be ready for the troops that are still “over there”, and for the next generation of Veterans who serve to protect us when they come back to their communities and will be in need of our assistance to move forward.

Currently there are 57 severely wounded Veterans in our program (full and limited assistance) and 63 graduates. In addition to these numbers, there is a small group of Veterans that we have assisted in a new category called “General Assistance”. As you can see, we continue to bring new Veterans into our program and “walk at their side” over a 4-year period of time.

This year’s annual report will give you a small snapshot of some of the Veterans in our program. To see more you can always visit our website (www.sentinelsoffreedom.org) or our Facebook page where we feature the Sentinels on a regular basis.

You continue to play a vital role in our program and our success. We are grateful for your ongoing support.

Sincerely, Mike Conklin Chairman & CEO Sentinels of Freedom Scholarship Foundation

“Our nation’s warriors stand up to serve their country. That tie binds generations and unites us around the common cause of freedom. We honor

those who give so much and ask for nothing in return.” Sean Parnell U.S. Army Airborne Ranger, Author, Outlaw Platoon

The Thirteen Year War

In October 2001, then President George W. Bush told the country that he was sending the American military to Afghanistan in order to “bring justice to our means”. We have now been at war for 11 years (2012). When the final troops are withdrawn in 2014, the USA will have been at war for 13 years.

When a soldier returns home, we know that many are faced with challenges and those who have sustained permanent injuries/disabilities have the biggest hurdles to overcome. The number of soldiers who have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is staggering: Between January 1, 2000 – August 20, 2012: 253,330 soldiers sustained a TBI. Another challenge for many Veterans is the significant delay (not in all cases) in receipt of their VA disability pay. Recent news stories have highlighted the VA processing backlog and revealed that the wait in some cases is up to 2 years. For the Veterans in our program, the funding that Sentinels of Freedom provides, help bridge the gap between when they are discharged and actual receipt of VA compensation. This allows the Sentinel to focus on school and their future goals vs. how they’ll pay their bills.

Mission

The mission of Sentinels of Freedom is to provide life-changing opportunities for men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have suffered severe, permanent injuries post 9/11 - primarily in Iraq or Afghanistan. These warriors greatly benefit from the care and loving support of grateful communities willing to assist them as they set out to achieve their goals and dreams.

Unlike any other time in our U.S. history, many more severely wounded service members are returning home to face the extreme challenges associated with putting their lives back together. Once these severely wounded Veterans are released from hospitals and rehabilitation centers, they face major issues such as relocation, housing, continuation of their education, employment/career planning, and, in most cases, continued medical care and rehabilitation. All Veterans face difficulties assimilating back into civilian life, but for the severely wounded Veteran these hurdles are much higher.

Program

Our program has remained the same since Sentinels of Freedom started in 2003 to assist Jake Brown, the first Sentinel in our program. It is through our comprehensive tenets that we are able to provide the Veteran with the services that will help lead to their success as they graduate from our program. Sentinels of Freedom provides the Veteran with the resources and support they require to lead an active, engaged and successful life as they recover from the physical and emotional impact of their injuries.

Education: Veterans in our program are required to continue their formal education in line with their capabilities and goals. In most cases, the Veteran begins school shortly after arriving in our program. This is intended to be a fulltime effort. We know that the job market is very competitive and even though these Veterans have served our country, there are no special circumstances given. A business needs to hire the “best person” for the job. It is for this reason we at Sentinels of Freedom believe that post-secondary education will be a critical part of their success.

1. Mentorship/Guidance: Each Veteran is surrounded by a team of volunteers who fulfill many roles including working with the Veteran to ensure that all paperwork and benefits owed to them has been, and continues to be, taken care of. They also act as their advocate, ensure they have the resources needed during school and assist with securing employment when the Veteran is ready. The team assists the Veteran in regaining their health and connects them with mentors, colleagues and friends who will be there for them long after they have left our program.

2. Housing Assistance: Veterans in our program come to us unemployed and seriously disabled, many with special needs and very little income-earning potential. Without our assistance, they may face lives of poverty and dependence and a very real potential risk of homelessness. We subsidize their housing costs while they are in the program to enable them to focus on rebuilding their lives.

3. Job Training and Retention: Once in our program, and depending on the Veteran’s capability, at some point we work with the Veteran to secure employment/training opportunities. This is done on a part-time basis with the goal in mind of eventual full-time career employment.

Veterans in Our Program

As of June 2012 we have now served over 120 Veterans (currently in our program or graduated). We are able to accomplish this goal through the local teams that rally around to support the Veterans in our program over a 4-year period of time. The teams come in different sizes. Sometimes it’s one or two mentors, and other times its 5 – 10 people. We are always looking to set up new teams so that we can provide the Veterans in our program with as many different options as we can when it comes to locations.

How to Get Involved

1. Financial Support. There are many different options when you choose to support Sentinels of Freedom with a financial contribution. Here are some of the ways that you can support us. Visit our website for more detailed information at www.sentinelsoffreedom.org

a. Financial donationb. Matching funds from your employerc. Gifts of Stocks or Bonds (contact [email protected]

for delivery instructions)d. Gifts of Real Estatee. Gift of Retirement Assetsf. Bequests (contact [email protected] for wording)

2. Become a mentor and/or set up a team in your area. We are always looking to set up new teams across the U.S. If you know of someone who might be interested, have them contact us and we can provide them with an overview and training.

3. Assist with opening doors to corporations/companies regarding financial support.

4. Volunteer at the office (2678 Bishop Drive, Suite 105, San Ramon, CA). We always need assistance completing thank you letters and sending out requests to corporations whom we wish to target for financial support.

5. Committee and volunteers are needed for our fundraising events. We have two fundraisers: a golf tournament and a bike ride. We are always looking for volunteers who can roll up their sleeves and assist with the organization and solicitation of sponsorships and donation items for both events.

“We are the silent ranks, the families of our active, reserve and guard members. It is our quiet privilege to stand alongside all those who serve, and knowing

full well the risk, to raise our families to understand the calling that our loved ones have committed their lives to. We love you, we are grateful for your willing

ransom, and we are proud to pay tribute to you on this day and every day.” – Lori Volkman, Navy Spouse and Military Brat

A Veteran’s Corner at San Francisco State University

Sentinels of Freedom, PG&E and San Francisco State University joined forces in 2012 to create a “VETS Corner” at the San Francisco State University. The “VETS Corner” provides a dedicated location for Veterans to socialize, exchange and build upon ideas, study, and a place where incoming Veterans can make the transition to civilian life. The new addition to the San Francisco State University was opened on November 9, 2012. The number of veterans registered with UCSF was 572 for the 2012 Fall Academic year. Most, if not all, of these Veterans will never “raise their hand” and say that they have a TBI or PTSD; however there are many Veterans who have these unseen wounds at every University. It’s one of the reasons the “VETS Corner” is so important at any University. We, at Sentinels of Freedom, are reaching these students by partnering with Universities and Colleges as we grow this program. Sentinels of Freedom can continue our mission to serve those who are severely wounded but never identify themselves.

The number of dependents of disabled Veterans that UCSF served in the 2012 Fall Academic year was 449. As word of the “VETS Corner” spreads the number of Veterans utilizing this facility continues to grow. The Veterans within UCSF and specifically those who utilize the VETS Corner were very active in the 2012/2013 school calendar year.

Listed are just a few of their accomplishments:

1. Conducted a Toys for Tots Drive : over 100 toys collected2. Conducted a First Aid Trauma workshop: over 30 people

attended3. Held a Career and Community Event with recruiters from

AT&T, Chase Bank, Cisco and many other corporations: over 80 attendees

4. Connected disabled Veterans with internships at TIVO, WEBCOR and Robert Half

As you read all that these students have accomplished, it’s clear that they never stop serving their country and the communities where they reside. These Veterans are an investment and we will continue our partnership with SFSU and PG&E.

Sentinel ProfilesEnrique Pineda – Graduated from Sentinels of Freedom

There are no words to describe the utmost respect and gratitude our family has for the Sentinels of Freedom program. Since I became disabled my greatest fear was not being able to provide for my wife and child. And one of the greatest comforts that the program has gave to me, was knowing that my family was going to be taken care of. With this I was able to get better and get the help that I needed emotionally, physically and financially. For me dealing with my terrible circumstances on a daily bases, the program gave me that extra push to achieve my goals and not give up. Without the guidance and support, I strongly believe I would probably be without the people I love most and a lost soul.

I would like to thank first of all Mr. Conklin for establishing this outstanding program. We also want to thank the Board of Directors and all the men and woman who make this program possible and to the ones who have contributed as well. They all have given us a second chance in life and are keeping families together.

Brian Vargas – Full Scholarship

Well, over the year the Sentinels of Freedom has opened the door to opportunities for me and my family; opportunities that I did not have before. When I started with the Sentinels of Freedom I was introduced to my current Rotary Club, and I have become a very active member. I will be on the board as Sgt. at Arms for this upcoming Rotary year. I feel that being a Sentinel has put me in the position to be a significant member of my community, and I hope to impact other lives the way the Sentinels of Freedom had impacted mine and my family. I honestly see the foundation , the program, has put my family in a strong place to become the best at anything we set our eyes on. Lastly, having the Sentinels in my life financially, and as a support/mentor organization has eased my personal stress levels. Allowing me to focus myself on my school work, the evidence is showing in my grades.

John Schumacher – Full Scholarship

In the six years that I had the honor to serve my country, I learned what it feels like to stand up for what is right and what I believe in. I had the privilege to serve with the bravest men and women, who like me, raised their right hands and volunteered their lives for the sake of freedom. The sense of pride I get when someone shakes my hand and thanks me for my service is one of the best and most humbling feelings anyone can experience. When people ask me what it is like to lose a leg, I know that they are expecting to hear about the struggle, the pain, and the sadness that is inherent in such an event. But for me, the pain and loss is minor compared to the pride I feel with every step I take and the joy I get from waking up everyday and realizing that life is truly good.

While many doors have closed since I lost my right leg, I know that even more have opened. One of the most integral moments I had at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, was when I met Mike Conklin and Marty Kaplan. I remember they shook my hand, looked me in the eye, and reminded me that my hard work, determination, and courage were not lost on the battlefield. They told me that they would challenge me, assist me, and above all else that they would always have my back. The promise that the Sentinels of Freedom made to me has grown into a bond. The time, resources, and energy that they have dedicated to my growth have helped me to become the man I want to be. The Sentinels have truly changed my life, from laying in a hospital bed feeling sorry for myself, to achieving my goals and dreams. They have assisted me with getting accepted into Georgetown University’s business school, served as my mentors, and above all else have inspired me to continue to have that sense of pride in myself and in my country. I am just one of many veterans whose service to their country did not end when they were injured. For me, I know that I would not be where I am today without the commitment, service, and dedication of the Sentinels of Freedom. My life almost ended on May 28th, 2009, and I am glad it didn’t, because I have a lot of work left to do.

Sentinels of Freedom provides me with resources which enable me to focus on my studies with the singular focus they deserve. Through the professional contacts and expertise provided by the program, I am simultaneously able to establish a network and an investment portfolio which will serve me throughout life while pursuing my educational goals. The Army developed me as a man and professional soldier, school offers me the opportunity to obtain a necessary educational certification, and, in addition to the other, more tangible benefits, Sentinels of Freedom helps me to acquire knowledge of domains traditionally found in the private sector, such as finance and investing. My intention is to return to national security work, most likely with the government, and having this exposure to disparate professional fields is invaluable in today’s world, where the factors influencing statecraft and strategy are no longer the near exclusive prerogatives of the state. On a personal level, this also allows me to take advantage of opportunities in a greater number of fields to further enrich my life.

Sam Schoenheit – Full Scholarship

The Sentinel program has been tremendous blessing for me. Without the program I would not be in the fantastic college that I attend. I would not have been able to afford having a mortgage and renting an apartment at the same time. I would certainly not have the connections that I do, and the help that those connections can provide.

When I first met Mr. Conklin in person it was for interview to get into the Sentinels of Freedom in Washington D.C. He had a commanding presence, and a soft manner, and then he explained the program. After I had learned that I was accepted, it was a big relief to me. He asked me what I wanted to do with my life, to which I replied, be a high school history teacher. Then Mr. Conklin recommended some colleges to me, and we went from there. Once I had picked the school out, we then met with the team that would be looking out for me. The team has been a reliable resource, providing me with necessary help when I need it. If I have any questions about anything, I know that I can reach out to someone on the team.

Another thing about the Sentinel program is that I can focus on school and not finances. I pay all my bills on time anyway, but it is very nice to have some breathing room. I have worked extremely hard to stay out of the red, and I have some money saved up, but slowly and surely I would go into dept. I still have a house elsewhere and do not think that I could handle a mortgage and rent by myself without getting a job while in school. The program allows me to solely focus on getting a good education, so I can start contributing back to society. I am unbelievably grateful to be a part of the Sentinels of Freedom program.
