They are one of the first signs that we’re approaching our beloved Jersey
shore—the expanses of salt marsh that line our state’s coast. These rich
habitats provide aesthetic beauty, support a variety of wildlife and help
protect our homes and businesses from flooding during
storms. But sea level rise has many of New Jersey’s coastal
areas under stress, and some of our precious marshes are,
quite literally, drowning. In partnership with the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection, the Army Corps of Engineers,
Green Trust Alliance and others, The Nature Conservancy
is helping to give New Jersey’s coastal marshes a needed
boost. Funded by a $3.42 million grant from the U.S.
Department of Interior’s Hurricane Sandy Coastal
Resiliency Competitive Grant Program, we are piloting a
program that uses the unwanted sediment from navigational
dredging to build up the elevation of targeted salt marshes.
The process, called “thin spreading,” employs water cannons
to spray 3 to 6 inches of clean dredge material across low-
lying and degraded sections of marsh, helping the wetland
better keep pace with sea level rise. The Nature Conservancy, which received nearly $500,000
of the grant, is assisting with site selection, coordinating
monitoring, compiling results and planning future projects.
The first of the green-lighted projects began in August near
Stone Harbor in Middle Township, Cape May County, with thin
spreading performed to support healthy marsh vegetation and to create
sand bar habitat for the endangered black skimmer. Another test plot for
marsh restoration is planned in Avalon this fall, and in fall 2015, we will
apply what we learned from the two test sites to larger marsh restoration
projects in Avalon, and the town of Fortescue along the Delaware Bay for
a total of approximately 90 acres of salt marsh restoration.
The marsh restoration project will allow us to demonstrate the benefits
of salt marshes in helping to reduce flood risk to local communities, while
we test an innovative restoration technique. After we improve the health
of these marshes, they will be better able to respond to sea level rise and
other coastal hazards while providing habitat for wildlife and a multitude
of benefits for coastal communities.

Restoring a River
How do you restore a river? It may sound like the start of a riddle, but
it’s actually an important real-world challenge right here in New
Jersey. The fertile valleys and healthy waters of the more than 40-mile-long
Paulins Kill in the northwest corner of our state have powered livelihoods
and food production for more than 300 years. Over time, however, activities
like mining, logging, farming and development have taken their toll, and the
river’s health has declined. For the Paulins Kill to remain a viable resource for
the people and wildlife depending on it, it needs some serious attention.

Learning In Nature,
Not Just About Nature
Connecting People with Nature
Children explore natural resources along the shores of Upper Mississippi River
National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. (Brady Whealon)
Children on a field trip to Mosquito
Island on Upper Mississippi River
National Wildlife and Fish Refuge in
Minnesota explored and collected aquatic
invertebrates. One little girl read about
her critter and exclaimed, “If I cut my
bug in half, each half will grow a new
head and tail!” Children ran from all
sides of the island to look at a critter that
could grow a new head.
Refuge visitor services manager Cindy
Samples coordinates this floating
classroom project with Winona State
University, which christened a former
John Deere Company party boat “River
Explore” and sends it out on the river
for teacher workshops and student field
trips. Funding comes from Nature of
Learning grants, the Hiawatha Audubon
Society, a local birding club and the
Winona State University Foundation.
“The experience and knowledge the
refuge staff brings to each river trip
leaves the children and teachers with an
enriched sense of wonder and learning
about our wildlife refuge,” explains
Ann Rethlefsen, associate professor of
education at Winona State University.
People value and conserve what
they care about, and they care about
what they have directly experienced.
