PROGRAMME
JUL—SEPT
2014
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S WELCOME
Summer is here at Project Arts Centre and
we have a great programme of dance, music,
theatre and visual art to whet your appetite.
I am thrilled to welcome back old favorites
and new friends as part of our season.
Liv O’Donoghue’s extraordinary dance
double-bill is unmissable; I have been watching
the development of these works over the past 18
months and I cannot wait to share this wonderful
collaboration of musicians and dancers with you.
In our gallery, Acting Curator of Visual
Arts, Kate Strain, presents The Centre for
Dying on Stage #1; an ephemeral research
body, which generates artistic undertakings
that investigate the notion of death in a
performative setting; featuring artworks by
Karl Burke, Dina Danish, Dan Graham, Krööt
Juurak, Christodoulos Panayioutu and Meggy
Rustamova. These artworks will be brought
to life with an expanded public programme
of events, to include screenings, recitals,
lectures, performances and the serving of
aptly constructed cocktails by visiting artists.
AC Productions are back with a new take on
one of Shakespeare’s most rarely performed
plays, Timon of Athens. This company always
brings a new twist to any production they
mount and I am looking forward to seeing how
they take on this tale of boom and bust. Staying
with Shakespeare, from the team that brought
you King John, Then This Theatre bring a
work-in-progress of Measure for Measure,
one of the Bard’s most celebrated plays.
Playwright Tom Swift and Composer
Ellen Cranitch will be presenting a work-in-
progress of their new opera based on James
Joyce’s The Dead; a unique take on one of
our classic stories.
The Edinburgh Festival is one of the
most extraordinary cultural experiences and
I am delighted that we will be presenting
previews of some Irish shows that will no doubt
be taking the festival by storm; Collapsing
Horse will present two works, the magical
Human Child and the madness that is Bears
in Space. I am also proud to be presenting
JUL—SEPT 2014
2 / 3
Gúna Nua’s Pondling, which is written and
performed by Genevieve Hulme-Beaman.
Festival season kicks off in style in
September with the Tiger Dublin Fringe under
the leadership of new Director Kris Nelson.
Having got to know Kris over the last year I am
so excited about the wonderful programme he
has lined up. All will be revealed in late July!
Also to be announced in July is the
programme for this year’s Dublin Theatre
Festival, which promises yet again to bring the
best and most exciting Irish and international
theatre to Dublin. Keep an eye on our website
for updates on the festival programme.
2014 has been a year of extraordinary
change for Project Arts Centre. This summer
we welcome some new members to the team,
including our new General Manager, Claire
O’Neill, our new Producer, Sarah Ling, and our
Bar Manager, Andrew Adamson, takes up a
new role as Bar & Sales Manager. Over the
last 8 months we have been taking a forensic
look at ourselves, examining what we need to
put in place to move forward through the next
few years; to continue to be able to support
artists and bring you the best work possible.
In 2016, Project Arts Centre will reach its
50th Anniversary; certainly a major milestone for
any institution. Over the coming months and year
we will be asking ourselves what it means for a
contemporary arts centre to reach such an age.
How do we mark such an occasion, especially
at a time when the country will be looking to
our past? I will look to the future; working with
our artists, board and partners at the forefront
of contemporary practice; to continue to be an
organisation that challenges the establishment
and a space for new art-makers to explore and
present work; an organisation that is financially
secure, has a revitalised building, and is
presenting the best of Irish and international
contemporary arts for you, our audience.
I look forward to welcoming you back to
Project in the coming months. Happy summer!
Cian O’Brien, Artistic Director
CURATOR’S NOTE
44 / 45
Mud, Titus Andronicus, Don Carlos,
Silver Stars, Conjuring for Beginners,
Swimming with my Mother … I
have experienced some profoundly
moving moments over the years as
an audience member at Project Arts
Centre. Having worked at Project in
many different guises over the years I
have also known the excellent support
of the team during tech week, the
nervous anticipation of the daily box
office report and thrill of an opening.
Project’s significance in the
cultural landscape, must never be
underestimated. I am one of a vast
number of those who work in the
arts who feel a great affinity with
Project Arts Centre and have always
greatly enjoyed working here. It is
far more than just a physical venue,
however. The work undertaken by
the organisation, outside of the
presentation of contemporary art,
through it’s provision of artist supports
plays a vital role in developing and
nurturing the next generation. The
CATALYST Initiative has contributed
to the flourishing of some of Ireland’s
most exciting work in recent years
and in turn the building has benefitted
from housing this vibrant artistic
talent within our bright blue walls.
I now find myself embarking on
a new journey with Project and am
delighted to be joining the team as
the new General Manager. Given what
Project has achieved over the last
48 years, I am excited to be working
with Cian and the team as we soar to
new heights to bring you the best of
contemporary art and to build lasting
supports for the wonderful artists with
whom we work.
Claire O’Neill,
General Manager

This exhibition marks the first iteration
of The Centre For Dying On Stage, an
ephemeral research body, which generates
artistic undertakings that investigate the
notion of death in a performative setting.
The exhibition brings together a
recurring sculpture by Karl Burke; two
works on paper directed by Dina Danish;
video footage of a 1977 performance by
Dan Graham; a potential performance by
choreographer Krõõt Juurak; a sign hailing
the end by Christodoulos Panayiotou;
and a series of interrupted images by
Meggy Rustamova.
Suspended in a state of petrification
for the duration of their time together,
these artworks recall the frozen moment
of stillness under a spotlight, when
the audience – held in the thrill of
the performer’s last breath – is called
abruptly into being. Throughout the
summer months these artworks will
be brought to life with an expanded
public programme of events, to include
screenings, recitals, lectures, performances
and the serving of aptly constructed
cocktails by visiting artists. These
events take place on Thursdays from
6 – 8pm in the gallery at Project Arts
Centre, from 24 July – 28 August.

THE QUEEN STILL FALLS TO YOU
Hadley + Maxwell
18 / 19
JUL—SEPT 2014
THE QUEEN STILL FALLS TO YOU
Gallery
26 September – 11 October
Curated by Tessa Giblin
We are delighted to announce that
Canadian artists Hadley+Maxwell will be
working with Project Arts Centre to create
an installation in our gallery as part of
Dublin Theatre Festival.
Hadley+Maxwell will be presenting an
echo of a tale of imperialism, a sculpture
installation that builds on tangible historical
memory, in an intangible, spectre-riddled
environment. “The Queen Still Falls To
You“ stages a shattered and recomposed
version of Queen Victoria. It follows the
thread of a Dublin monument of Queen
Victoria that emigrated to Sydney, Australia
in the 1980s, and montages her against
various versions of the same monarch.
Alongside Dublin Theatre Festival’s
presentation of avant-garde theatre
and performance in the 2014 festival,
Hadley+Maxwell further prise open the
material elements of theatrical experience,
scenography and sculpture. “The Queen
Still Falls To You“ is resolutely an
exhibition, but with the dual contexts of
theatre and imperial history to inform it.
“The Queen Still Falls To You“
has been developed from a work
commissioned by the Sydney Biennale
in 2014, and is elaborating into an
installation for Project Arts Centre
during Dublin Theatre Festival 2014. The
exhibition celebrates the relationship
between Project Arts Centre and Dublin
Theatre Festival, and follows the many
exhibitions and presentations which
have built bridges from theatres to our
gallery, including exhibitions by James
Coleman, Geoffrey Farmer & Jeremy
Millar, Eva Kotatkova, If I Can’t Dance,
Conjuring for Beginners, Clodagh Emoe,
Barbara Bloom and Gerard Byrne.

A new version of one of the most rarely
performed plays of William Shakespeare.
Timon is rich and overly generous.
He lavishes gifts on his friends without
care. His friends are the corrupt city
leaders who flatter Timon and privately
mock his generosity. When Timon finds
that his wealth is exhausted, he sends
requests to his friends for help. They
callously turn him down. His faith in
humanity destroyed, he rages against
all mankind and goes to live alone in the
wilderness. In the wilderness, the now
misanthropic Timon discovers gold, and
when news of his discovery gets out. The
false friends and hangers-on seek him
out in the hope of further generosity.
This new abridged version, featuring
nine talented actors, was last performed
in Ireland at the Dublin Theatre Festival
1978. Its tale of reckless spending and
careless indulgence followed by betrayal
contains some of Shakespeare’s most
powerful language and speeches and
echoes Ireland’s recent economic collapse.

The Irish Times on With Raised Arms
Irish-Norwegian Liv O’Donoghue is a dance
maker and performer. She was an Associate
Artist with Dance Ireland (2011 – 2013), and
is currently a Modul-Dance carte blanche
artist. She graduated from Northern School
of Contemporary Dance in 2007. Her work
has been presented widely throughout
Ireland, and in the UK, Sweden, Latvia, Italy,
Austria and Norway. Liv has performed with
Liz Roche Company, Wendy Houstoun, junk
ensemble, John Scott Dance / Kyle Abraham
(Abraham-in-Motion), and Dead Centre,
touring throughout Europe and the USA.
A stunning dance double-bill from
Liv O’Donoghue.
Hear Me Sing Your Song recklessly hauls
you to a remote place and leaves you at the
side of the road. There, existing somewhere
between make-believe, memory and reality,
you find yourselves as strangers, unsure of
how you got here or where you’re going to.
On this rough terrvain, surrealism and dark
humour is all you have to ward off the bleak
cold. What happens when you have no
place, and people are what you call home?
Created in collaboration with
renowned musicians Caoimhín Ó
Raghallaigh and Bryan O’Connell, Hear
Me Sing Your Song threads together a
fragmentary family history and the vaguest
of memories, uncovering a past to shed
light on the present.
With Raised Arms boldly exposes the
choices we make within the strange
rationale and cynicism of politics in the
status quo. With a rough-edged score by
Tom Lane, this duet is unsettling, stark and
visually arresting.

MEASURE FOR MEASURE (WORK IN PROGRESS)
JUL—SEPT 2014
MEASURE FOR MEASURE (WORK IN PROGRESS)
Space Upstairs

We came. We read. We voted.
Following on from last year’s King John,
Then This Theatre Company presents
a semi-staged reading of William
Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure.
Vienna has become a hotbed of
vice. In order to better understand his
people, Duke Vincentio appoints Angelo
as his temporary deputy. Under Angelo’s
totalitarian rule, Vienna becomes choked
with a culture of anxiety and shame.
When a young man named Claudio is
condemned to death for premarital sex,
he begs his sister, the would-be nun
Isabella, to plead with Angelo for his life.
Overcome by her beauty, Angelo agrees
to spare her brother’s life…if Isabella will
sleep with him.
Measure for Measure combines humor
with pathos, as a virtuous heroine
tries to save her brother and her soul
from the lewd desires of a hypocritical
villain – with a supporting cast of
cheerily debauched characters. One of
Shakespeare’s “problem” comedies,
Measure for Measure looks at the rewards
of virtue and the punishments of vice.
This reading of Measure for Measure
is the culmination of the Re:past series of
informal readings organized by Then This,
whereby every second Sunday, a talented
group of actors were invited to break bread
and share in the reading and discussion of
a classic text (such as The Spanish Tragedy,
Everyman, Merry Wives of Windsor). At
the end of the series, all the actors who
had participated were asked to vote on
which of the plays they would like to see
further explored, and Measure for Measure
proved to be the proud victor. It is a delight
to share this next stage of our explorations
into Measure for Measure with an audience
via this bare-bones reading.

Joyce’s seminal short story is given a new operatic
treatment, for this work-in-progress performance.
Tapping into the deep vein of musical references that
runs through The Dead, composer Ellen Cranitch and
writer Tom Swift have created a pared back musical
telling of the story. Four singers accompanied by a

Coffee like no otherCoffee of the highest order, coffee that delights: this is illy’s mission, passion and obsession. A simple idea created through complex means: eight decades of experience; unmatched knowledge of coffee biology and chemistry; unrivaled skill at roasting; the pioneering of innovative, enabling technologies; and a family’s entrepreneurial passion.
There is a taste, a feel, an aroma that is all illy’s own. Velvety, immediately sweet, delicately balancing floral and fruity notes with caramel, toast and chocolate, naturally fragrant with aromas of almond and honey. You just might hold the sugar, for the very first time.
This is balance that comes only from a blend: the singular illy blend of nine highest-order Arabica beans, selected and directly purchased by illy from farms spanning four continents. Each individual bean contributing to a greater whole, for the pleasure of those who appreciate all that coffee can and should be.
In the cup, the illy blend becomes a symphony: rich, full, multi-faceted, yet subtle, comprised of immensely talented soloists, each coaxed to their finest performance under the hand of an expert conductor.
Food Solutions are the Irish distributors of illy. www.coffee-ireland.com
