JOHN SPILLANE is a musician, songwriter, performer, recording artist, storyteller, poet, dreamer – a canvass filled with colour and brilliance. His music transports the listener; his live performance captivates the audience. In a world filled with strife and upheaval, a time-out with John Spillane is enough to ease the load a bit on anyone lucky enough to bask in his light. The man and his music are pure magic.

LYNCHED, a four-piece traditional folk group from Dublin have built up a huge following across Europe during 2014. Tipped by many critics as the band to watch out for in 2015, Lynched combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of pipes, concertina, accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material.

SA MurphyStephen’s performances have seen him lauded as ‘Bardic’ and ‘Inspired’, winning multiple awards along the way for the quality of his verse. His first book, ‘The Sleeping Warrior’, is inspired by the mythology of old and the politics of the modern day.

In his new project Barry revisits some of the universal themes of folk music with a contemporary vigour. Self penned songs of emigration, of love, loss and legends beautifully written and accompanied by a stellar cast of Irelands finest musicians

BROUGHT UP ON North Uist in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, Fowlis has been a proud standard bearer for Gaelic music and culture over the course of a solo career, which has spanned over ten years and three highly acclaimed studio albums:

The Breakfast Sessions is the latest innovative idea to come from the award winning Duncairn Centre for Culture and Arts.

The Sunday morning sessions will also mark the launch of a series of Showcase Events highlighting the Arts and Cultural Community in North Belfast.

Have you dreamed of being a writer but don’t know how to get started?

Come to Duncairn Arts Centre where Poet, Moyra Donaldson and Playwright, Jo Egan will help you to develop valuable skills to support your evolution as a writer.Participants will be encouraged to use this course to explore the practice of being a writer by:

• Looking at techniques, forms, structure, plot, the use of time, action, characterisation used in developing short stories, plays and poems.• Exploring ways that a creative journal can be used as a resource for creative thinking, ideas and writings.• Ways to turn personal experience or historical records into artistic expression.

A key part of the process will look at ways in which the group can support each participant in their evolution as a writer through artist led discussions about work in development, examining the journeys and inspirations of established writers.

The Duncairn Centre for Culture & Arts are pleased to launch our second series of craft workshops.

Each week during this ten week series you will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with decoupage; the art or process of decorating a surface with shapes or illustrations cut from different mediums, felt-making; creating unique small artworks using coloured sheep’s fleece, glass painting; learn the art of glass painting and decorate your own glass tea light holders, button art is really in! Lets raid the sewing baskets and create bespoke/unique frames, cards and decorations…the possibilities are endless. Debbie Young, crafter, community artist and founder of ‘My Happy Place’, a small local arts and crafts business focused on working within the community, will facilitate this informal small group workshop in the beautiful setting of our new centre. Play and create using both new and old materials transforming them into beautiful handmade artworks including hand sewn nursery cushions, wall hangings, decorative art, up-cycled pieces for the home and even themed gifts as Easter approaches. Come along, be inspired, relax, have fun and bring out your creative side!

Series 2 of box fiddle making with Master Craftsman Rab Cherry.

We are delighted to welcome Rab Cherry to the Duncairn. Belfast born Rab has been making instruments for more than forty years and is recognised not only as one of Ireland’s greatest craftsmen but as an authority of all things to do with Irish fiddle music.

Participants will learn woodworking skills, how to use planes, scrapers, knives, chisels and gouges. Also how to maintain and sharpen these tools, how to prepare and use traditional woodworking glue (hide glue), how to clamp up the various parts of the box fiddle while gluing, making some clamping blocks etc.

There will be some background information on the history of box fiddles, which historically have been found all over the world including Ireland and the Appalacians area of the USA.

A basic understanding of the function and manufacture of the various parts of a box fiddle will also give an insight into the workings and manufacture of instruments of the violin family.

Best of all, everyone will get to make and take away their very own instrument.

THIS PROJECT WILL WORK with groups supporting young people, people with disabilities and older people living in the North Belfast area. They will learn skills in different artistic and multi-media mediums, and apply these skills to developing a modern multi-media tapestry representing their experiences and perceptions of everyday life. The outcome of the work will result in an exhibition at Duncairn Centre For Culture And Arts.

SET IN AN ISOLATED COTTAGE on the snow-trapped Black Mountain, the play tells the story of a bizarre love triangle. Pregnant Patsy from West Belfast has gone there to have her baby with the support of her two friends: older woman and academic Sally and beautiful American Law student, Madison.

But when Patsy’s ex-boyfriend and baby’s father, Joe arrives on the scene to try and win her back, Patsy announces she’s now in love with Sally. When naïve Joe learns that Madison is also a lesbian, he believes he has stumbled into Lesbian Headquarters Central. Throw in a turkey baster and the baby’s imminent arrival and the scene is set for a monumental tug of war. Packed full of Belfast humour, Baby It’s Cold Outside has had audiences rolling the aisles in The MAC and West Belfast Festival.
