Just what is the area we call North Norfolk? Norfolk is a big county, and the part of it you’re about to discover is defined by a sweeping crescent of over fifty miles of coastline. This great arc of seascape swings from Winterton in the east, where Defoe set Robinson Crusoe’s first shipwreck, to Hunstanton in the west, a place inextricably linked with the works of P.G. Wodehouse and L.P. Hartley.

Stretching southwards and inland the area takes in Heacham. It was here, long before Disney discovered her, that Pocahontas came to live with her husband. Reaching over to Wroxham and Arthur Ransome’s setting for Coot Club this is a unique spread of coast and countryside. You’ll find tiny villages set against vast vistas, bustling streets just minutes away from backwaters and byways, rolling rivers and of course the Broads.

The hundreds of square miles that make up North Norfolk are a cultural landscape, living in perfect harmony with a cherished natural environment of outstanding beauty.

There are lots of ways to get around North Norfolk. You certainly don’t always need the car. In fact, the less you drive the more you’re helping to protect the natural environment that forms such a fantastic backdrop to our cultural landscape.

There are some delightful walks around the area. Cycling is another great way to see the scenery between your chosen destinations. Don’t be scared; as Noel Coward said, ‘Very flat, Norfolk’. (Actually it’s not totally flat, but we don’t exactly have mountains!).

Bus routes abound and of course there’s the train - some of them still steam!

Cycling on the BroadsAt the Norfolk Broads Cycling Centre between Hoveton and Horning on the A1062 at BeWILDerwood, you can hire quality bikes and tandems from Broadland Cycle Hire and obtain all the information you need to enjoy a pleasant ride around the countryside. Cycle hire from Bircham WindmillThere is a selection of circular routes starting at the Mill along quiet lanes. Our 1 hour and 2 hour routes are most popular for family cycling. W A L K I N G :

The Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path starts in Suffolk at Knettishall Heath Country Park and follows the route of a Roman road to Holme-next-the-Sea on the north Norfolk coast. At Holme the Peddars Way meets the Norfolk Coast Path as it runs from Hunstanton to Cromer. Fantastic scenery and landscape cover the 150 km (93 miles) of the two trails of the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path. Linda. H. Matthews has a studio open to visitors all year round. she has worked as a full time artist and tutor for 12 years. Her work is in private collections worldwide, she has exhibited at the Designer & Artists Copyright Society in London. Inspired by everything around her, she prefers the freedom of painting from life, en plein air, in the countryside of North Norfolk, amongst many other places. Linda runs a unique course, which combines the pleaure of cycling, with numerous opportunities to improve your artistic talents.
