Reverend Justin Duckworth, the Bishop of Wellington, will lead us in prayer. School closes immediately after Prizegiving and although we expect most parents to be in attendance, normal school buses will be operating following Prizegiving. After Prizegiving, tea and coffee will be served in the old Library or inner quad for the leavers and

their parents.

Staffing 2013

After our self-review process which involved full consultation with staff, we have developed our staff structure for 2013 as follows:

Y1 Yvonne Odinot Y2 Glen Jorna Y3 Alison Garland (AP) 4C Michelle Colley 4T Christine Trummer 5P Chris Parker 5S Veronica Stevens 6L Chevon O’Leary 6O Tony Orbell 6S Kate Sinclair 7/8D Sarah Dahlberg 7M Jon Mackie 7N Michelle Norton 7/8T Andrew Tait 8B Murray Blandford 8P Tim Parkes

Although there could be some minor changes to the configuration below, our support staff will be structured as follows: Anne Familton* will continue her Reading Recovery role as well as supporting literacy in the Junior School. Eve Owen* will continue her art role. Steve Girvan (DP), continues as Professional Development and Curriculum coordinator (including the promotion of higher order thinking), Maths and Pastoral Care (incl. transport). Ross Hampton is Head of E-Learning. Garth Johnson is our ICT Manager. Mary-Anne Morgan* will have her usual Music responsibilities and will be involved in Literacy Learning Support. Ruth Hooke* continues her role in the Performing Arts. Darren Houston will lead our PE/Sports and Outdoor Education

programmes. Ross and Steve will also have special responsibilities in the Year 7 & 8 classes. For example, both will be taking Senior Maths, thus ensuring we have eight teachers for six classes. The Middle School Maths programme will benefit from having an extra teacher and the assistance of a teacher aide. Jo Hawthorne* leads our Science and Technology programmes. Teacher support will also be provided by Annick Geldermans*, Sue Jones*, Jackie Grey* and Maxine Rose*. Janice Meo* will run our computer based SuccessMaker and Lexia Programmes, as well as taking a maths group. Jane Kent continues as our Librarian. Deirdre van Beynen* has worked here both as a teacher and as teacher support. Deirdre will continue to teach alongside Yvonne Odinot in the Junior School. We have an excellent staff/child ratio and, once again, I’m thrilled with our capable line-up of staff. We are also fortunate to have very capable staff in the administration and maintenance areas of the school. Karen Reid is my PA, Hilary Fiennes is our Bursar, Margie Beattie is our Development Manager. Pam Graham* is our Accounts Officer and Fiona Donnelly* our Uniform Shop Manager. Anne England* will continue to work as administrative support. We are currently recruiting for a new Domestic Services manager who will be assisted by Rachel Seymour*. Gerard Maahuis continues as Caretaker. Paddianne Neely* continues as our Archivist.

(*denotes part time)

As reported in the last newsletter, we farewell Elizabeth Pearson (Domestic Services manager) who is heading to Golden Bay. Elizabeth held this position for eight years after working as a Teacher Aide at Wellesley. Elizabeth developed a lovely relationship with the boys and staff. Elizabeth’s son attended Wellesley and is now Head Boy at Scots.

Orientation Days

At this time of year we are welcoming our next intake into Wellesley by having orientation days. They give our current boys a chance to host new boys and give the new boys an opportunity to meet some new friends. Orientation also gives new boys a chance to get to know the school so the transition to Wellesley can be as smooth as possible.

Wellesley ‘Mo-fti’ Day

On Tuesday 20

th November, the school held the first gold coin ‘Mo-fti’

Day in support of Movember and the Cancer Society. We raised $419 for this most worthwhile cause. Many of the boys sported fake or drawn on moustaches, and great fun was had by all. Completing Movember officially as a team, The Wellesley Mo Bros, were Mr Chris Parker, Mr Darren Houston, and Mr Garth Johnson. Many thanks for all the contributions; it was truly a ‘mo’ mentous occasion! Chris Parker and 5P

Speech Finals As you know we put a lot of emphasis on the boys having the skills and confidence to present themselves in both formal and informal situations. We have been delighted with the standard of speeches across the school. (Top-Y6 abs. Hamish Hutton, Y5 and bottom Y7+8 and Y4)

Year 4 Speech Final This was held on Wednesday 14

th November. We were very lucky to

have Chevon O’Leary as the adjudicator. All 8 finalists had put a lot of thought and preparation into their speeches and they were of an extremely high standard.

1st place Thomas Bloomfield –

‘Living in France’ 2

nd place William Chandler –

‘What It’s Like To Be A Twin’ 3

rd place Archie Riley – ‘Sharks’

Other finalists were: Hugo Blair – ‘Did Neil Armstrong Land On The Moon?’, Caleb Wong - ‘Free Range Eggs’, Daniel Fuller – ‘Felix Baumgartner’, Henry Nelson – ‘Cat Olympics’ & Ben Penno – ‘Coffee’.

Year 5 Speech Final The Year 5 Speech Competition Finals were held on Wednesday 21st November, and proved to be a showcase of the talent in the year group. The audience of parents, pupils and staff were enthralled by the variety of topics covered. The standard this year was very high, in terms of both the actual content and structure of the speeches, as well as the delivery. It certainly made for a difficult task for our adjudicator, Charlotte Gendall. The eight students involved were: Toby Marks (Sensational Senses), Charlie Plimmer (The Jamaica Bobsled Team), Max Abbot (Innes Finlayson), Josh Kemp Whimp (Taking a Trip Into Space), William Smith (Bear Grylls), Jim Lockwood (Thrill Rides), Kyle Foo (If I was Prime Minister) & Jacob

Edginton (Snorkelling).

Although all of the boys could easily have earned a placing, a tough decision had to made, providing us with the following results. Jim Lockwood and Jacob Edginton roller-coastered and snorkelled their way to a tie for 3

rd

place, Josh Kemp Whimp rocketed into 2

nd position and Toby

Marks successfully sensed his way to 1

st place. All the finalists deserve

congratulations, and special thanks must go to our adjudicator, Charlotte Gendall. Mr Chris Parker

Year 6 Speech Final

The Year 6 Speech Final was held on Friday 23

rd of November and

was judged by Mrs Sue Jones. The finalists were William Durkin, Hamish Hutton, Jesse Richardson, Hugh Morrison, Jack Richards, Arlo Doak, Rahul Vijayasenan and Jacob Reiher.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN Page 4

These boys did extremely well to make it to the finals out of 51 Year 6 boys. The audience enjoyed hearing a range of interesting and entertaining topics which were delivered extremely well. Our judge awarded Hugh Morrison and Jack Richards with equal 2

nd

place, and Jesse’s entertaining and educational speech on ‘Disgusting Foods’ won him first place. Well done to all the Finalists, and a big thank you to Mrs Sue Jones! Kate Sinclair and Tony Orbell

Senior Speech Competition

This year’s Senior Speech Competition had eight finalists; three from Year 7 and five from Year 8. As usual, the job was a difficult one for this year’s adjudicator, Alexandra Lutyens, a consultant communication strategist and Wellesley parent. The overall winner was Harry Mills, with a speech entitled ‘Tournament of Minds, Australia’. Second place went to Year 7 pupil William Devane (Honey Bees), and third place went to Joseph Plunket (Kim Dotcom, Saint or Sinner). The winner of the Year 7 Speech Cup was therefore William Devane. Other Finalists were Gus Ashton (My Memories at Wellesley), Hugh Lockwood (How to be a Dad), Ben Strowger-Turnock (Tribes of Wellesley), Matthew Sutcliffe (Laughter), and Tom Valentine (Is Technology Taking over the World?).

Congratulations to all the Finalists on their efforts.

Junior Book ‘Sketch up’ One of the highlights for the Junior School is having an opportunity to work alongside our Year 8 buddies. This year the children used a ‘sketch up’ 3D programme. Their brief was to either design Wellesley school for the future or design a home for the future, e.g. buildings, furniture, outside grounds, planting, play equipment and making

decisions about sustainability and ergonomic design. They will share the 3D design at the centennial. It is always so lovely to watch the relationship between the boys. (below left, Finley Y8 and buddy Anders Y3)

The Year 0s went on a ‘bear hunt’!

Citizenship

All the children in the school voted anonymously for two boys in their class who they respected most for their integrity and caring behaviour towards their classmates. The following boys gained the most votes. It is always lovely to see the variety of names. Y0 Ezra Baker and Harry Welsh Y1 Alex Wilson and Max MacLachlan Y2 Jack Pettit and Floyd Reddish Y3 James Frickleton and Adam Raitt 4C Fred Anderson, Matt Bevan and Jeremy Wong 4T Aidan Cushman and Archie Treadwell 5S Jake Ross and Dinuk Samarasinghe 5P Charlie Plimmer, Jim Lockwood and Josh Kemp Whimp 60 George Lethbridge and Dominic Coffin 6S Cole Kennedy and Jacob Reiher 7M Zac Jones and Cameron Tyson 7N Albert Humphries and Vivek Barapatre 7/8D Alexander King and Ben McCay 7/8T Olly Paotonu and Harrison Stewart 8B Gus Ashton, Pere Wi Rutene-Pomare and Milo Benn 8P Ben Mitchell, Conor Occleshaw and Luke Whitehead

Christmas Tree

Christmas is coming! The Christmas Tree has been placed in the foyer. It is a time for excitement and happiness for most, but for some families it can be a time of hardship and stress. Let us help to brighten Christmas for those children less fortunate than ours. Your son is asked to bring a present to put under the tree. The Salvation Army will pass on our gifts to

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN Page 5

children from needy families in Wellington. The gift can be new or preloved (in good condition), wrapped and labelled with the age and gender of the child that the gift would most likely suit. Thank you for your support.

PE and Sport 2012

The School Athletics took place last week in two parts. The middle and senior boys were in the morning and the juniors in the afternoon. These events were the end part of the athletics programme for the majority which has dominated PE and sport sessions this term. We apologise for the late change to the school event but there has been a lot of uncertainty with the Zone, Inter-Zone and regional events. We understand how difficult it is to take time off work and organise commitments. The overall results were as follows: Wellington was the winning house followed by Selwyn, Marlborough and Croydon. The individual results are as follows:

Year 4 – 1st Ethan McKenzie,

2nd

Archie Chandler, 3rd

Daniel Fuller

Year 5 – 1st Ruaridh

Ferguson, 2nd

Oliver Hall, 3rd

George Buist

Year 6 – 1st

William O’Connor,

2nd

Nick Cooke, 3rd

Gerry Green Year 7/8 – 1

st Andrew Loveard,

2nd

= Thomas Bramley, Harry Cook (1

st Year 7),

Wellesley entered 27 boys in the Year 4-6 Zone Athletics sports at the Hutt Rec Ground in Week 6. Toby Cook won two individual events and William O’Connor, Ben Riley and Nick Cooke won one each. The Year 6 relay team won their race after recovering from a baton drop. Three leading boys were hampered by injury which was disappointing for them. William O’Connor has qualified for an athletics meet in Australia through his club. Nine boys qualified for the Inter-Zone event in Naenae last week. The Year 6 relay team won their race. Hugh Morrison won the Year 6 quoit

throw (discus) and Archie Chandler won the Year 4 1000 metres. Ruaridh Ferguson won the Year 5 long jump and William O’Connor won the Year 6 vortex. The Senior Tennis Championships have all been held. Angus Liddell won the Singles title by defeating Isaac Becroft in the final. Angus defeated Finley Hall in one semi final while Isaac won against Harry Hunter in the other. Isaac and Angus defeated Harry and Jin Dassanayake in the Doubles Final. The level of tennis was outstanding in all the finals. Gerry Green won the Year 6 singles title by defeating Nick Cooke in the Final. Gerry combined with Hugh Morrison to win the doubles against Christopher Bramley and Cillian Butler. Angus, Harry, Finley and Isaac competed in the North Island Primary Schools’ Championships in Hamilton. All four progressed to the quarter finals before losing and then had to fight out for the 5

th through to 8

th placings

amongst themselves. Angus won the 5th spot.

The Senior Triathlon is scheduled to take place today. The senior boys have organised themselves into teams of three with each going to do the swim, run or cycle legs in Eastbourne. 8B, 8P and 7/8D had their turn with the Yachting New Zealand run sailing sessions at the Seaview Marina. The other three classes had their turn earlier in the year. The boys had fine weather and enjoyed the half day sessions. The Year 6 Colts cricket team played Scots College in Week 5. Wellesley was hosted by Scots on a beautiful day. Wellesley bowled first and used most of their bowlers to bowl Scots out for around 40 runs. The wickets were spread amongst the bowlers. The chase was short, with the runs reached inside 4 overs, but we batted on to give more boys a bowl and bat.

A senior cricket team travelled to Nelson for a 40 over match against Nelson Prep School. The Sunday ferry crossing was followed by a coaching session in very hot conditions before being billeted. The hot weather greeted the boys on the morning of the match. Wellesley batted first and made 183. Opener Tim Campbell made a very impressive 69 and formed an important partnership with Captain Harrison Boyle (34). Nelson Prep struggled with the demanding run rate and the tight

William hard on the turn in the 200m. Angus and Isaac who battled out the singles championship. Angus won the match. The Junior School sack race is always a highlight.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN Page 6

Wellesley bowling. Gus Ashton was the pick of the bowlers and finished with four wickets. Nelson Prep was bowled out in the 40

th

over 54 runs short of the Wellesley total. Several Nelson parents commented on how much they enjoyed hosting the Wellesley boys. The 1

st XI Cricket boys are

scheduled to play the traditional father/son cricket match on Friday this week. These boys plus other senior cricketers are involved in the Suburb of Origin Cricket game on Tuesday next week. Some of the Year 8 boys pair up with their mothers for the mother/son tennis tournament next Monday. The 2

nd XI and a Selection Tennis

VIII travelled to Whanganui in Week 4. The cricket team played their 1

st XI and bowled them out

well short of our total. The tennis team was far too strong again with no matches lost in the eight singles and four doubles. Thank you to the parents for getting the boys up for the early start and the parents who provided transport! Year 6 and senior boys intending to play tennis next year can purchase black shorts with pockets and caps from the uniform shop. The shorts can be used for PE instead of the normal plain shorts. The two Karori basketball teams have been very successful in their leagues. The senior side has developed over the three terms into a fantastic team, with Cade Young and Jonny Joyce setting the standard. The middle school side have enjoyed playing together and become a formidable team. Thank you to Jenny Joyce and Fran Hornsby for organising these teams. There were a large number of boys who brought back forms for the Weetbix TRYathlon which takes place next term. Those boys have been entered by Wellesley but other boys can enter online and name Wellesley as their school.

School tracksuits are a requirement for the senior boys next year. Both the old or new styles are acceptable and I encourage leaving boys to try and sell theirs to those boys who haven’t purchased one yet. I have some tracksuit tops which haven’t been claimed over the year so come and see me if your son is missing his. Darren Houston.

Talent Contest

Our Wellesley talent competition winner was Y7 Marcus Millad who wrote and sang his own composition. The finalists were: Mika Denham, Arlo Doak, Conor Occleshaw, The Band, Josh Whimp Kemp, Toby Cook and Luke Whitehead. This event was a first and a stand out success. Look out 2013!

Refugee Children

A few times a year, Eve Owen and boys host a group of refugee children from St Michael’s school in Taita. This exchange is of great mutual benefit for our boys and the refugee children. The experience brings service, humility and a grounding experience for our boys and the refugee children have experiences which many have never experienced. A few words from Eve Owen.

For our last visit from Saint Michael’s we went outdoors. The refugee children have always been delighted by the sea so 11 visitors, hosted by the same number of Wellesley boys, spent the day on the beach. Having looked at images of beach sculpture we made our way to Eastbourne where they created their own 'Happy Castle', swam, played games and roasted marshmallows on fires they built. Watching our boys and these courageous young children playing together is very heartening.

2013 Classes and School Reports

Year 4-8 school reports will be posted to you no later than the 16th December.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN Page 7

At the moment we are looking at the composition for the Y4-8 classes. This is time-consuming and much thought goes into the make-up of the classes, as we look closely at the composition of the class both academically and socially. We don’t encourage parents’ requests and at the end of the day, I ask you to please rely on our professional judgement. The boys come into contact with a variety of staff via Maths programmes, ICT, Art, Performing Arts, PE/Sport, Science etc. We are very fortunate to have a strong team of teachers who work together to ensure your son’s individual needs are met. Your son’s class placement will be either posted out with the reports or during the school break.

Year 8 Dinner

Our annual Leavers’ Dinner for all our Year 8 boys and their parents will take place on Tuesday night, 11th December at the Boatshed in Wellington. I always look forward to this special occasion, as it is an excellent opportunity to farewell the boys, many of whom have been at Wellesley since they were five years old. (5.30pm for 6.00pm start) Our guest speaker is Hon. Justice David Collins, High Court Judge. Many thanks to Trish Perrins who is working hard to co-ordinate this special event.

Leavers’ Parent Drinks

Thank you to all the parents who were able to join me and staff for drinks and a catch-up recently. The evening was well attended and if the noise level from chatter is any measure of how well the evening went, it was a huge success!

These evenings are totally dedicated to the parents and offer an opportunity for them to reflect on their time and associations at the school. For many of our 2013 leavers’ parents, it is their last son attending Wellesley and marks a significant point in their relationship with the school, which in some cases has been a considerable length of time.

At Wellesley we are very keen that this is not seen as an end but merely a stepping stone to the future. We wish all our leavers and their families success and enjoyment in the next stages of their educational experience and please do keep in touch. We really love to hear what is happening to our Old Boys.

Inter-School Contact

Each year there are various opportunities for our Y7 and 8 boys to host or attend school dances with girl schools. The Year 8s have an annual day with Queen Margaret College playing sport, debating and having a shared music concert where the boys and girls have a chance to shine.

Year 7 West Coast Trip

Sunday 11 November, the day we had been waiting for since the start of the year! Assembling at the ferry terminal at 7.30am was when the nerves really started building. We had all put in a lot of time and effort to be able to get there. The ferry ride was smooth and we arrived in Piction, bound for Westport. We had a quick stop on the way at Lake Rotoiti, for afternoon tea, before a swim in the Westport pool when we arrived. Our two days in Westport involved getting wet (and having lots of fun) going Underworld Rafting, getting dirty down the Denniston coal mine and spending some of our hard earned money on sunglasses and deep fried

Moro Bars(Thomas highly recommended

the Black Shark takeaway as well!).

Stopping at Punakaiki en route gave us a chance to stretch our legs before arriving in Greymouth. After making our 50cent fortunes gold panning at Shantytown and getting caned at the Marsden Valley School, it was time to leave for Fox. Fox Glacier was very big (13km long) and very fresh, we know because we drank melted glacier ice. The half day walk was amazing! Bus Idol finals entertained us on Thursday night and we discovered that Marcus Millad could be a famous singer one day while the parent winner, Andrew Murray, blew Xavier and the other judges away with his own ‘personal’ act. Not to mention that Xavier was probably the best judge in a lot of ways. After our last night in Greymouth we had a long drive back to Picton to catch the ferry. On behalf of Year 7 boys we would like to thank all of the parents, teachers and Hospitable West Coasters who made this extravaganza trip possible. James Dunne and Dillon Nickel

Logan got up close and comfortable with some Hobbit stars.

Otago Problem Challenge

Wellesley boys took part in this maths problem challenge during the year. The challenge consists of

FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S PEN Page 8

five tests of 5 questions. The question opposite is an example. 28,000 students throughout NZ take part in the competiton and at Wellesley, 40 students achieved Merit, 42 achieved Excellence and one gained a perfect score of 25 out of 25. Congratulations to Jesse Richardson for gaining a perfect score. Boys achieving Excellence: Cameron McMahon, Dominic Coffin, Dougal Colquhoun, Gerry Green, Henry Chandler, Mika Denham, Tom Chisnall, William Durkin, James Dunne, Zack Scott Howman, Alexander Plimmer, Angus Liddell, Oli McLaren, Jin Dassanayake, Harry Cook, Edward Twomey, Will Sim, Thomas Watkins, Thomas Valentine, Rob Dickson, Matthew Sutcliffe, Marcus Millad, Campbell Benseman, Lochie Shaw, Ben McCay, Louis Gradwell, Henry Burton Wood, Oliver Fletcher, Tom McKenzie, Isaac Ulusele, Fergus Murray, Oliver Whyte, Jonny Joyce, Harry Mills, Finley Hall, Tom Turner, Olly Paotonu, Luke Fuller, Lachie O’Connor, Harrison Stewart, Harrison Devane, Andy Dowell. The top 23 students took part in The Final Challenge. Congratulations to Jonny Joyce and Matthew Sutcliffe who achieved Distinction in the challenge.

A Helping Hand. The Junior School had a very successful can collection for the Wellington City Mission. Thank you to all the families who were able to support this worthwhile cause.

Lastly, I want to thank you as parents. 2012 has been so exciting and successful on so many fronts. You have been a great support to your boys and us as a staff. The year has again been full of highlights and it is a pleasure to see the boys develop so well. I will see you all at one of the many school occasions coming up, but in the meantime, I wish you a happy fes-tive season and in particular, a Merry Christmas. Best wishes Warren Owen

EXCITING NEWS and ‘HEADS UP’ for 2013 GOLF DAY and DINNER Mark in your diary Friday midday March 22nd 2013 Parent Steve Jones (ZacY7) and his team are in the early stages of organising this biennial event. Having played it myself, I can tell you it is a lot of fun and the dinner very memorable. More information to follow. GALA 2013 After much consideration, parent Phillipa Paviour-Smith (Sam Y4) has agreed to be our lead convenor for the our November 3rd biennial Gala. Although some time off, this event requires a lot of planning and preparation. Again, more information to follow. On behalf of the boys and staff, I want to say how grateful I am to Steve and Phillipa for accepting these leadership roles. I encourage you to get behind them and support the two events. Even though it is still early in the piece, please feel free to email them to indicate support. Steve [email protected] Phillipa [email protected]

Wonderful Spirit I was so pleased and impressed with two boys’ generosity. Both Year 8’s Finley Hall and Milo Benn had a birthday recently and they asked their guests not to buy them a gift but use their money to purchase a gift to put under our Christmas tree to go to those in need. A wonderful gesture!
