Principal's Corner - 7 November 2013

Today we welcomed Liam Smith the South East Region, Assistant Regional Director to our school.

He was here to conduct the Verification meeting which is the final step in the Quadrennial School

Review process. At this meeting he noted the strengths of our school, the priorities and areas of focus

for us in the next four years and signed off on our Strategic Plan. He was very complimentary of the

work we are doing here at Thornlands and commends us on the strong collegial nature of our staff

and the strong community support that we enjoy. I would like to thank all of you, who offered us

your feedback throughout this process. After analysing and synthesizing all of the feedback from

staff, parents and students the following was developed as our new school Vision Statement. It is

based around the six values that emerged strongly as those which we as a school community aspire

to: Trust, Respect, Teamwork, Community, Inclusion and Excellence. The Vision Statement

below will be on our school website in the near fut ure.

Thornlands State School Vision – Our Values in Acti on

(Excellence, Trust, Respect, Inclusion, Community, Teamwork)

EXCELLENCE (Teamwork, Inclusion, Community, Trust, Respect)

At Thornlands State School our Vision is MORE, Making Our Results Excellent. This reflects our high

expectation for the success of all students and staff who we believe, can and should, achieve their full

potential. This is achieved through our community, students, parents and staff, working together and

being committed to our Thornlands State School vision.

We highly value opportunities for our community to engage, learn and achieve across the "pillars” of

education; Academic, Sporting, Arts/Cultural , Social/Emotional and Community as we “Grow the

Whole Child”. We embrace diversity and are inclusive of all, helping every student and staff member

reach their full potential and excel to their personal best.

TRUST AND RESPECT (Excellence, Inclusion, Teamwork, Community )

As one of the oldest schools in the Redlands we are proud of our traditions, whilst at the same time

reaching into the future to create a responsive curriculum, which prepares our children with lifelong

skills. Students receive appropriate modeling and encouragement to demonstrate respect for and

acceptance of a diverse range of learners and learning styles. As they engage in meaningful and

purposeful learning they develop

trust that they will be supported and challenged to reach their full potential and achieve at or above

National standards. Learning takes place across a range of settings and situations, enhanced by the

use of digital technologies used to support learning and engagement. Students are encouraged and

challenged to have high expectations and the motivation to succeed and to learn individually as well

as collaboratively. We challenge students to take risks in their learning, to strive for improvement, to

set personal goals and learn from their mistakes. Commitment, excellence and achievement are

acknowledged and celebrated at all levels by our school community.

INCLUSION (Excellence, Teamwork, Trust, Respect, Community)

Data is used to drive decisions at whole school, class and student levels. Rigorous identification of

differing needs and abilities is combined with effective intervention and evidence based, best practice

teaching, including a range of extension programs to challenge our most capable learners. The

teaching of Higher Order Thinking skills promotes the development of learners who question, have

the curiosity to seek answers and can apply skills and knowledge in a diverse range of contexts.

Personal learning goals are designed and developed collaboratively between teachers, students and

parents and are a valuable resource to provide explicit feedback to enhance our learning at

Thornlands State School.

COMMUNITY and TEAMWORK (Excellence, Trust, Respect, Inclusion)

Both our teaching and non-teaching staff are highly skilled and knowledgeable. We engage in

ongoing professional development to further enhance our abilities and work collaboratively in strong

teams which regularly plan, reflect and share together. In this way we learn from, and are led by each

other, as we strive for our personal best. Hence, Thornlands State School is constantly building our

school’s capacity to achieve our vision as we engage in a consistent whole school approach to

teaching, learning, assessing and reporting. We consistently draw on our collective strengths and

continuously grow the professionalism and knowledge of our staff .

Thornlands State School is proud to enjoy a very positive reputation in the larger community and

students come from a broad geographical area, attracted by our strong academic outcomes as well

as our reputation for a positive, supportive and safe learning environment. Students are happy at

Thornlands State School, enjoying a sense of achievement and optimism which are the outcomes of

our positive school culture. Our students and staff are always encouraged to strive to do their best

both individually and as part of a team.

At Thornlands State School, we value our strong sense of community, our strong sense of belonging

and commitment and our shared responsibility to ensure effective partnerships are built within and

beyond our school. We provide a range of leadership opportunities for staff, students and parents as

our highly valued partners in the learning process. We provide clear, timely and open communication

with meaningful opportunities for active participation and consultation within our community. A range

of whole school events provide a forum for sharing and celebrating our many successes. At

Thornlands State School we embrace a culture of reflection, dialogue and feedback, where all

opinions are valued and considered and are part of our continuously evolving, highly positive

community spirit.

_________________________________________________________________________

One of the strengths of our school is the involvement of a large number of parents and other

community members who volunteer their time in a myriad of ways from assisting in the classrooms, to

working in the tuckshop, to attending camps and excursions, to upgrading our gardens and in so

many other ways. Their contribution overall is invaluable and so we would like to say thank

you. On Thursday, 6th December at 9:30am we will be holding a morning tea to express our

appreciation for the time and commitment of our volunteers. Watch out for your personal invitation

coming home soon.

Please note – if you have a Prep aged student who will be attending Prep at Thornlands next year

and you have not already done so, now is the time to get the enrolment process completed (even if

you already have older children already attending our school). If you have not done so as yet, please

contact the school Office ASAP for an interview time. This assists us greatly with our planning for next

year.

Thanks for your ongoing support of our great school.

Measles health alert

Queensland Health is concerned about the number of measles outbreaks in Queensland this year.

Measles is a highly infectious disease that begins with symptoms such as fever, tiredness, cough,

Page 3 of 19Thornlands State School Newsletter

runny nose and/or red inflamed eyes. Measles can lead to complications such as middle ear

infections, pneumonia (lung infection) and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain).

Measles can spread very easily. Vaccination is the only way to prevent measles. Queensland Health

encourages anyone who has not had two measles-containing vaccinations, or who is not sure about

their vaccination status, to get vaccinated as soon as possible. The measles vaccine is free from your

local doctor for anyone born from 1966 onwards.

If parents think their child might have measles, they are advised to keep them away from school and

make an appointment with a doctor or phone 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) to organise medical

assessment.

Health and Safety

In the interests of the health and safety of all our staff, students, parents and other visitors I ask you

to be mindful of the following important matters:

The playground equipment is not to be used before and after school, as its use is not

supervised at those times.

Smoking is not allowed on school grounds. Should you need to smoke, please ensure that you

move away from gateways and other entry points where children and parents are likely to pass

close by.

Dogs are not allowed on the school grounds at any time.•

Thank you in advance for your consideration with regards to these important matters.

Crimestoppers

You may have noticed a new Crimestoppers sign next to our gate on South Street. This has been

provided by the local Crime Prevention branch of the Queensland Police. To assist them to promote

Crime Stoppers I have included the link to Crime Stoppers Queensland below.

Thanks for your ongoing support of our great school.

Welcome to the end of Week 5 and the middle of Term 4! The term is in full swing with a range of

exciting learning opportunities being undertaken in each and every classroom! Don’t be alarmed if

your child seems unusually emotional or tired at present. At this time of year, it is perfectly

understandable. However there are a number of steps you can take to minimise the impact and

strain on your child and ultimately your family.

Try to stick to a routine as much as possible : At this time of year there are a number of

evening events and gatherings that interrupt our usual routines. On the days that aren’t

interrupted endeavour to ensure that your child eats well and gets plenty of rest.

1.

Ensure there is ‘down time’ : Just like all adults, your child also needs time to unwind and

relax. Don’t push them to engage in conversation if they don’t seem to want to talk.

Encourage them to go and do something fun or relaxing like riding a bike or reading a book

and try again later.

2.

Consider reducing extra commitments or demands : Unfortunately at this time of year the

list of demands competing for time and attention can seem endless. If you are feeling

overwhelmed then it is quite likely your child is also. It is not always possible to miss

something, but for those events or sessions that aren’t a high priority or can be postponed,

consider rescheduling or cancelling.

3.

Parent Information Sessions on Reading

Over the past fortnight we hosted two parent information sessions on reading and the ways you can

support and extend your child at home. These workshops were very well attended and the feedback

was extremely positive. Don’t be dismayed if you were unable to attend as we will be holding these

sessions again early next year. If there are other areas of the curriculum that you would be interested

in learning more about, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I am very keen to make these sessions

relevant and purposeful to our school community and am more than happy to cater these

presentations to areas that are identified as being of high need in our community.

Australian Curriculum

As you are hopefully aware, 2012 saw the implementation of the new Australian Curriculum English,

Maths and Science. This year teachers began teaching Australian Curriculum History, and in 2014

Australian Curriculum Geography will be introduced. For the first time in Queensland Primary

Schools, both History and Geography are being taught as individual subjects in a discipline based

approach. Through these studies, it is intended students develop a holistic knowledge of the world

and its peoples, as they come to understand and appreciate it from the different perspectives inherent

in the disciplines. Strong continuities within these curriculums are developed progressively, from

Prep to Year 10 to align with senior levels of schooling.

Page 7 of 19Thornlands State School Newsletter

Geography is an extremely practical discipline made all the more engaging by the development of

spatial technologies such as GPS, GIPS, ‘World Wind’ and ‘Geoflight’*. Like History, Geography

uses an inquiry approach to assist students to make meaning of their world. This basically means

that it teaches students to ask and respond to questions, plan an inquiry, collect,

evaluate, analyse and interpret information and suggest responses. Students will

conduct fieldwork, map and interpret data and use spatial technologies. They will

be expected to develop a range of skills and capabilities and extend their thinking

through the use of information and communication technologies, identifying and

appreciating different perspectives, engaging in cooperative learning scenarios and responding

critically and creatively to information and problems posed.

Education Queensland is supporting schools and teachers with additional Curriculum into the

Classroom (C2C) exemplar resources for History and Geography. Teachers at Thornlands State

School will continue to engage in professional learning in order to effectively implement both of these

areas.

When: Every Tuesday morning from 9am to 12pm.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the small army of volunteers who, in such a short period

of time have managed to transform the Year 2 and 3 eating area gardens into a beautiful space full of

flowers and colour. A definite change from the barren brown dirt that was once there. We are enjoying

the challenge and overwhelmed by the support that we have received from the parents, teachers and

Seasons for Growth Grief Program-Learning to live w ith change and loss

Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At

Thornlands State School we recognise that when changes occur in families

through death, separation, divorce or related circu mstances, young people may

benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore

offering a very successful education program called Seasons for Growth. We are

planning to offer this program in Term One and Two 2014. This program is facilitated

in small groups during class time, depending the age of the student (groups for 6-8

yrs, 9-12 yrs). The program will be run by jointly by Robyn Weber Guidance Officer

and Angela Wolferstan Chaplain and is based on research which highlights the

importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively

with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem,

managing feelings, problem-solving, decision-making, effective communication and

support networks. There is no cost for the program at this stage. Materials are

supplied. There are 10 weekly sessions. Sessions last 45-50 minutes.

If you think your child may benefit from Seasons for Growth program we would

encourage you to attend a parent information session prior to commencing the

program.

Thornlands State School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and

we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request

to be involved. If you are able to attend this session or would like an alternative time

for the session, please contact Robyn Weber at [email protected] or Angela

Wolferstan at [email protected] .

Our school has now introduced a great new online ordering system for the tuckshop called

FlexiSchools. This system allows parents or students to place orders from home, work or school at

any time typically up until just before school starts. The payment is also done online, so you no

longer need to send cash or a paper order to school. As well as being convenient for parents, the

online orders are much faster and easier for the canteen to process - so it makes everyone’s life a

little easier. FlexiSchools is well established and tested, operating in hundreds of schools across

Australia.

Getting online is easy and only takes a second to register. Simply go to www.flexischools.com.au

and click “Register Now”. You will be sent an email with further instructions on how to complete the

registration. Once registered, you can start placing orders immediately. If you have any questions,

FlexiSchools provide a great help desk on 1300 361 769, or you can contact them via their website.

There are a variety of payment options supported, including Visa, Mastercard (credit and debit), Bank

Transfer and Payclick. The system operates via a pre-paid account, so you don’t need to scrounge
