RUGBY CHAMPIONS

On Thursday 8 June, Year 7 and 8

students competed in the Counties Rugby

Competition after successfully making it

through from the Northern Counties

trials. Students competed in the Open,

U55 and U45 grade. Many of our students

were in the U45 kg team and they actually

made up most of the team.

All the students did well and the U45 kg

team took out the competition and will go

on to compete in the Auckland Rugby

Championships on Tuesday 27 June.

PARENTS LEARN MORE ABOUT MATHLETICS

A number of parents attended the Mathletics Parent

Information evening on Tuesday 13 June organised by

the school Maths Team and run by Mathletics expert

Graham Flanagan.

This was a useful evening for parents and gave them

the opportunity to ask those tricky questions. Thanks

to those parents who took the time to come along.

Student Led Conferences Yr 4—8 –notices were sent home last week with appointment slips attached. Please contact the school if you have children in years 5-8 and have not received a notice. The school will be holding Student Led Conferences for children in Years 4-8 on Wednesday 5 July from 1.00pm – 7.45pm. Not all Year 4 students are due for a conference (parents will be notified if your Yr 4 child is having a conference). This year there will be up to five conferences happening at a time in different areas of the classroom. A letter will be sent out in the next few weeks for parents to book a time to attend these. Attendance is expected and appreciated as part of your children’s education at Opaheke School.

Please note that school will close at 12.30pm on Wednesday 5 July as teachers will be involved in conferences from 1pm. The Ponga Road bus will leave at this earlier time.

MORE ABOUT THE STUDENT LED CONFERENCES ...

Opaheke School will be having Student Led Conferences on Wednesday 5th July.

This is a process where your child has a discussion with you about how their learning is going, the progress they are making,

and goals they are working on for the remainder of the school year. Through this we hope to develop a feeling of greater student

voice and partnership in learning. Being able to discuss their learning with you also creates a sense of ownership and pride for

your child.

Last year we introduced a new format for these conferences. We collected the feedback from parents following the student led

conferences and we have made improvements to the format based on what you told us. Overall the feedback we received was

very positive, with some minor changes.

Key changes made: a clear welcome and clear check in at the end, an opportunity to get clarification and further information

from the teacher, information about more than reading, writing and maths, increased teacher availability, information about

how parents can help at home.

What can you expect to happen at the Student Led Conference?

You will meet your child’s teacher and be welcomed to the room. Your child will share their learning with you. They will talk

about what they are learning, and how their learning is going, for example their strengths and their goals. They will suggest

ways that you can help them with their learning. Your child will share their assessment information with you and explain what

it means. There is an opportunity for you to look around the room at the current work and for your child to explain the things

that are important to learning at Opaheke School.

Before you leave, the teacher will check in and make sure you have all the information you need and want. They will be able to

clarify any questions you have. If you feel your child needs help during the conference, or if you need more information this can

be indicated to the teacher and they can come and support.

The feedback showed us that the flexibility created by implementing this format was important to parents. It allowed for:

• more time to discuss the learning if more time was needed.

• your child to converse with you in the language you are most comfortable with.

• a wider range of information to be shared.

IN ZONE ENROLMENT INFORMATION – The Education Act gives a guarantee of

enrolment to students who live in the home zone specified in the school’s enrolment scheme. The

board needs to be sure that an in-zone address is genuine, because it is required to manage the

enrolment scheme for the benefit of local students.

The address given at the time of application for enrolment must be the student’s usual place of

residence during the school term. This means that if you currently live at an in-zone

address but move to an out-of-zone address before your child’s first day of attendance at the school,

your child will not be entitled to enroll at the school.

The Ministry of Education has advised that parents should also be warned of the possible

consequences of deliberately attempting to gain unfair priority in enrolment by knowingly giving a

false address or making an in-zone living arrangement that they intend to be only temporary e.g.

• Renting accommodation in-zone on a short term basis;

• Arranging temporary board in-zone with a relative or family friend;

• Using the in-zone address of a relative or friend as an “address of convenience”, with no

intention to live there on an ongoing basis.

Before enrolment takes place (i.e. before attendance begins), if the board has reasonable grounds for

believing that the given in-zone address will not be a genuine, on-going living arrangement, the

board may withdraw any offer of a place which it may have made on the basis of the given address.

After attendance has begun, if the school learns that a student is no longer living at the in zone

address given at the time of enrolment and has reasonable grounds to believe that a temporary

in-zone residence has been used for the purpose of unfairly gaining priority in enrolment at the

school, then the board may review the enrolment. Unless the parents can give a satisfactory

explanation within 10 days, the board may annul the enrolment. This course of action is provided for

under section 11OA of the Education Act 1989.

Congratulations! A huge well done to Dannielle (Y8) on having her entry

for the “Beyond The Backyard” competition published.

She is the second of our students, this year to have her

work recognised and put into an anthology. The book

will be available for purchase from Amazon as an ebook

and as a print on demand from 1st July 2017 if you

would like to purchase a copy.

It is wonderful to see our students experiencing success

as writers!

Room 1—Year 5—Flight Challenge The whole school has been inquiring into the concept of flight and on June 8th all the

students in Years 5,6,7,8 took part in a flight technology challenge.

On Friday the 8th of June we did a technology challenge in the hall. We had to construct an air-craft that could fly . We worked in groups of three and my buddies were Presaius and Connor. Me and Presaius made a huge paper plane like most people, all of the Mangawhau team did this and there were years 7, 8, 6, and five. We used paper, straws, blu-tac, paper clips, sellotape and scissors. Our plane had two bendy parts of the straw then we stuck it to the back flat part of the bottom of the plane . We also got a long piece of straw with the bendy part and we cut it up into two pieces and we got another long piece of straw. We stuck the two smaller pieces on the top of the long piece and then we stuck it on with blu-tack but then we realized it wasn't staying there, so we stuck it there with some sellotape. We also had two paper planes, one on top of the other and it looked amazingly crazy! After that we went down to the courts where it was super sunny because we sat by the wall and the sun was in our eyes. When it was our turn Connor flew the plane and we came third as I said at the start. We did this challenge about half an hour before lunch time. Kailah

Yesterday on the 8th of June in between morning tea and lunch we had a Technology Challenge. It happened in the hall. We buddied up with two other people. Maungawhau did it because our topic this term is flight! I had Carlos and Curtis. Curtis is a year 7 and Carlos is a year 5. When we got into the hall we got to look at the resources. We used paper, straws, blu-tac, paper clips, sellotape and scissors. First we made a glider shape with the straws. While we were doing that Carlos was making the glider with the paper. After that me, Curtis and Carlos were done. We put them both together. Then we got to test them and see whose aircraft went the furthest! Sadly my team didn't win but it was worth the try. We had such a good time! I loved it! Maddi

When we were lining up it wasn't that quiet. We had the years seven, eight, six and fives from our Maungawhau team. We had to use sellotape, Blu-tac, scissors, six pieces of paper, and two paper clips and six straws. We used innovator challenge taker and more dispositions. Me and my two team mates had a wonderful time. We made a gigantic kite that was very heavy. We went to the courts. It was a year eight boy who flew our gigantic kite. We had a challenge with our aircraft to see who flew the furthest. Me and one of my other partners were cheering for my teammate who flew the gigantic kite. Saumani

Yesterday we did the technology challenge and we had to build anything that could fly, with paper, straws, blu-tac, paper clips, sellotape and scissors. In my group of three there was Liam who was a year 8. I also had Riley who was a year 7. When we got into the

hall for the challenge we looked at the supplies and we thought of what we could do. The first thing that came to our heads was a plane, or a paper plane. So this was our plan. For our aircraft we made a plane out of paper and then we put straws under the bottom

of the plane with blu-tac. Finally we put the sellotape around the straws, which made the plane go up a little bit more and gave it a little bit more protection . Then when we went outside on the court. Liam was the one who was going to give the plane great big push. As the

plane flew high in the air it did not fly that far but it was still very fun to do the technology challenge with people that we didn't know that well. Madelline

In class, I have been learning about what things fly and how they fly. I learned that birds have hollow bones to make them light. Finn

In our class, we have been learning about Richard Pearse and the Wright Brothers. We learned how they flew old airplanes. We have also been learning about dragonflies and we have been drawing them. Nellie-Mae

In class, I have been learning lots about flight. I learned that planes have a drag, thrust, weight and lift to help them to fly. It is very interesting. We did not just learn about planes but also hot air balloons, birds, dragonflies and lots more. We have done art and writing too. We made paper airplanes and flew them around the field. It has been fun learning about flight. Lexi

In Room 23 we have been learning about flight. We wanted to investigate how things fly and what things fly. We researched how planes, insects, birds and kites fly. We investigated the first ever planes and the people who invented them. In art, we focused on flying insects and old planes. We made kites of various types and flew many paper planes around to find the one that flew the furthest.

Animates - your local store will be hosting free workshops at 11am on

Thursday 13 & 20 July. The sessions will introduce children to the skills they

need to be a nurturing pet owner. This school holidays the focus will be on

teaching children on the essentials on caring for fish or reptiles including how

much to feed them, how to decorate and maintain their housing and the signs of

a happy and healthy pet! Answering all of those scaly questions such as “Do

fish sleep?”, “How do I hold a lizard?”, the workshops will include interactive

activities - face painting, activity booklets and a colouring-in competition.

There will also be the opportunity to ask the in-store experts for advice, and

children who complete the workshop will take home a certificate at the end to

proudly display on their wall or fridge. Although bookings aren’t necessary, the

events are usually well attended so it’s advisable to arrive early.
