We would like to draw your attention to our two highlighted shows of the season, Silent Night and Billy T and Me which are excellent shows and well worth catching, and if you’re quick we have an early bird offer on both shows at a special price (see centre pages for more details).

And now for some news from the theatre…..At the end of August we are saying farewell to Leilani, our Theatre Assistant who has been with us for the past 18 months who is moving to pastures new. Leilani has done a sterling job looking after all the hirers of the venue as well as all the administration that comes with the day to day running of the theatre. We would like to say a big thank you to her and to wish her all the best for the future.

However, it’s not all goodbyes, we have a new addition to the team in the form of our newly installed contract cleaners Alchemya. Ralph, Todd, Andy and Sheryl joined the team in mid July and have been hard at work making the venue shine and sparkle.

We would also like to inform you of a new initiative from the theatre, next year will see the launch of the Hawkins Youth Theatre Company, which will be formed to meet the increasing demand for youth drama in the Papakura area. More details will be released in the coming months, however, the company will be open to all 8 to 18 year olds who are interested in drama, whether it be acting, singing, dancing or even working behind the scenes. If you or someone you know would be interested, get in touch with us and we will send through an information pack as soon as they are available.

Sarah’s Key

Hook, Line & Sinker

A riveting thriller, The Conspirator tells the powerful story of a woman who would do anything to protect her family, and the man who risked everything to save her.Mary Surratt is the lone female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination trial of Abraham Lincoln. As the whole nation turns against her, she is forced to rely on her reluctant lawyer to uncover the truth and save her life. Based on Tatiana de Rosnay’s best-selling novel, Sarah’s Key tells the story of an American journalist on the brink of making big life decisions regarding her marriage and her unborn child. What starts off as a research article about the Vel’d’Hiv Roundup in 1942 in France ends up as a journey towards self-discovery as she stumbles upon a terrible secret and discovers the heartbreaking story of a Jewish family forced out of their home, a home that is now their own.

PJ is a truck driver with a workingman’s pride in his job. His partner Ronnie, her two kids bordering on adulthood, singing at the local pub and fishing with his mate Jono, form the backbone of his modest existence. But when he fails a mandatory eye test and loses his driving licence, PJ’s life unravels. In the face of his imminent future as a blind man, the ever pragmatic Ronnie upscales her wedding dress business with the help of her ambitious older sister Bernadette to become the breadwinner. But PJ, refusing to accept the loss of his sight, takes everyone on a tumultuous emotional journey to the very edge...

The Reluctant Infidel

Russian Snark

From acclaimed writer and comedian David Baddiel comes the smash hit British comedy of the year!

Mahmud (Omid Djalili – star comic, Sex and The City 2) is a loving husband, doting father and an admittedly “relaxed” Muslim. A normal guy living an everyday life. That is until a chance discovery turns his life upside down, throwing him into a full-scale identity crisis: it turns out he’s adopted, and was actually born Jewish.

Featuring an all-star cast of Djalili, Richard Sciff (The West Wing), Matt Lucas (Little Britain), Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife) and Miranda Hart (BBC2’s Miranda), The Infidel is a hilarious and feel good story that will have you roaring with laughter. Oy Vey!

Misha, a once celebrated Russian filmmaker has fallen on hard times. He resolves to leave his homeland in search of a film-friendly country where he can pursue his career. With wife Nadia in tow, he sets sail from Russia in a tiny lifeboat, drifting cross the Pacific to make land in New Zealand. Before long Misha realises that New Zealand is no more receptive to his ideas and aesthetic than Russia. Yet he perseveres with his experimental film, ignoring his wife’s pleas to find work, and increasingly withdraws into himself. Alone, his obsessions take hold and he steadily descends into madness. Only a chance encounter with a young Polyne-sian woman saves him from the ultimate act of self-destruction. His friendship with Roseanna inspires a re-awakening, as he begins to reconnect with the world around him.

Irene also shares the secret about her special ability – she receives direct messages from God. Luckily, her parish priest, Father Carlisle is a pillar of strength and a steadfast shoulder to cry on. And as if that wasn’t enough to contend with, Irene’s cat Monty has gone astray.

This is an ever popular show with Geoffrey and his gallivanting gavel as the Chairman alongside favourite Operatunity guest artists. To be included is an excerpt from The Mikado with songs such as ‘A Little ListThe Mikado with songs such as ‘A Little ListThe Mikado with songs such as ‘ ’, ‘Three Little Maids’, and ‘Katisha’s Songs’. With some musical assistance from Kate, the church flourishes, fulfilling Luke’s dream of cleaning up the streets and making a real difference to the community.Meanwhile, some of the city’s denizens are not so pleased with the dwindling levels of vice on the streets. Bowing to underworld pressure, Simon must betray Luke, delivering him into the hands of arch-crime boss, Mr Rothschild. Now Luke will face his ultimate test…

When notary Lebel sits down with Jeanne and Simon Marwan to read them their mother Nawal’s will, the twins are stunned to receive a pair of envelopes - one for the father they thought was dead and another for a brother they didn’t know existed. In this enigmatic inheritance, Jeanne sees the key to Nawal’s retreat into unexplained silence during the final weeks of her life. She immediately decides to go to the Middle East to dig into a family history of which she knows next to nothing. Simon is unmoved by their mother’s posthumous mind games. However, the love he has for his sister is strong, and he soon joins her in combing their ancestral homeland in search of a Nawal who is very different from the mother they knew. Curry MunchersCurry Munchers follows the life of Sid, a mid-twenties boy who migrates to Auckland from Delhi with his parents. He realizes that he is no longer as popular as he was in Delhi, and believes all he needs is a motor bike, like the one he had back home, to again catch the attention of girls. His parents want him to focus on his engineering studies, but Sid takes a part-time job at a struggling restaurant as a kitchen hand, without his parents’ knowledge, in order to buy the motorbike. His focus moves away from study towards the restaurant, new-found friends including the local girl Mary.

Then came along an opportunity to win the first ever ‘Auckland Metro Cooking Competition’, which changed his life forever. The struggle to keep all sides happy leads Sid to question who and what, is the most important in his new life.

Mrs Carey’s ConcertAt a Sydney girls’ school, music director Karen Carey prepares her young students for a concert at the Opera House. Believing in the transformative power of great music, Carey insists upon a classical repertoire, sets a dauntingly high performance standard and requires the participation of every girl in the school. Carey inspires many of her girls, but some do not share her passion and are not afraid to say so.

Mrs Carey’s Concert is about music making and coming of age, about talent and courage, compliance and rebellion. About those prepared to open their minds and hearts to what the world has to offer … and those yet to discover the potential within.

Vanishing of the BeesHoneybees have been mysteriously disappearing across the planet, literally vanishing from their hives. Known as Colony Collapse Disorder, this phenomenon has brought beekeepers to crisis in an industry responsible for producing apples, broccoli, watermelon, onions, cherries and a hundred other fruits and vegetables. Commercial honeybee operations pollinate crops that make up one out of every three bites of food on our tables.Vanishing of the Bees follows commercial beekeepers David Hackenberg and Dave Mendes as they strive to keep their bees healthy and fulfill pollination contracts across the U.S. The film explores the struggles they face as the two friends plead their case on Capital Hill and travel across the Pacific Ocean in the quest to protect their honeybees.
