CARBOTECH – MECHANISM OF ACTION:
1. Carbotech will bind with nutrients and protect it from lock-out in the soil or from leaching and volatilization.
a) Cat-Ions such as Ammonia, Potassium,
Calcium and Magnesium binds with Carbotech to form larger molecules, aiding in reducing leaching through the soil.
b) Anions such as Phosphates binds with Carbotech in 'n proses called organic Phosphate clustering protecting it from Calcium / Phosphate lockout.

Method
A Nitrogen mixture (AN and Distilled water) with and without Carbotech
was made and poured through a sand column. The sand column was
50mm in diameter and 150mm high. Coarse, washed silica sand was
used. Below are the measurements that were taken before and after the
sand “filter” It clearly demonstartes Carbotech’s ability to bind with
Nitrogen and to reduce leaching to a large extent.

APPLICATION PRACTICES:
• Carbotech is a liquid product that can be used with liquid or granular
fertilizer.
• Carbotech is compatible with dissolved fertilizers and will not precipitate
out.
• Carbotech is usually applied through the irrigation water, with or without
fertilizer, but as close as possible to the fertilizer application.
• Alternatively Carbotech can be applied, by spraying a dilute (1:10),
mechanically or manually on the soil close to the plant where the fertilizer
is usually applied.
• Application must be done as close as possible to the fertilizer application
CARBOTECH RECOMMENDATIONS: • Carbotech is applied in relation to the kg active element
(NPK).
• The Carbotech norms have indicated different
reductions in the different elements.
• Carbotech can potentially replace products such as
Humates, Kelp, Humic- or fulvic acids.

At this stage, the Carbon treatment is 56% thicker in the girth than the
conventional Hydroponic treatment. Tree size was obviously larger in
favour of the Carbon treatment.

Photosynthesis trials
The graph on the right represents photosynthetic parameters on a trial the was done on Nadorcots. The trail has a random statistical layout and the treatment received 2 liters of water with 80ml of Carbotech per tree administered manually on drip “pots” The control received 2 l of water only. The PI Total (Performance Index) indicate the increase in photosynthetic performance three weeks after application (PI Abs is the efficiency with which the leaf absorbs sunlight)

This graph shows that in addition to the yield increase of 13t per ha, there were also changes in
classification in favour of higher value classes. This resulted in a revenue difference of R27361 per ha, after
the cost of Carbotech (R4700 per ha) has been taken into account.

This graph shows that in addition to the yield increase of 1506Kg on 10Ha, there were also changes in classification in favour of
higher value classes. This resulted in a revenue difference of R59607 on 10 ha, after the cost of Carbotech (R1426.5 x10 =
R14295) has been taken into account. (Note: yield differences on seed potatoes are lower as their growth is terminated on 110
days)

LUCERN Early results on Lucerne with Carbotech looks very promising. No formal measurements have yet been made, but obvious growth differences were observed that have farmers excited. One farmer in Warmbaths stated that the yield difference might be as much as 30% higher in his specific case
Application Strategy:
• Carbotech is used in conjuction with a general purpose micro nutrient product like Multifeed
• Application is made directly after each cutting.
The rates are as follows:
• Carbotech: 4 liters per Ha
• Multifeed: 2kg per Ha
The cost is <R250 per hectare per cutting.
The intended result is an improvement in yield and / or an increase in nutritional value.
Although we found in some cases that a positive result was evident after the first cutting, we propose that an evaluation only be made after the third cutting.

MICROBIAL PRODUCT APPLICATION IN COMBINATION WITH
CARBOTECH
• Over the past years we have achieved very good results with the
combination of Carbotech with good microbial products.
– We have used Carbotech with TwinN nitrogen fixing bacteria to reduce
chemical N applications by up to 35kg N/ha
– We have used Carbotech successfully with NTS Platform (Mycorrhiza)
and Trichoderma, as part of an integrated root health program, with
other chemical products.
Mycorrhizal Fungi • Mycorrhizal fungi confer stress reduction to colonised
crops. They improve access to potassium and release phosphorous and calcium.
• These creatures also boost plant immunity and they offer primary protection against nematodes.
• NTS market a revolutionary blend of mycorrhizal fungi called Platform which can introduce large numbers of these organisms to the soil for as little as R250 per hectare.
• All of the functions delivered by plant roots are magnified in the presence of these creatures, as they increase root area ten fold and help retain both moisture and nutrients.

MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI – THE SOIL SAVERS
• Mycorrhizal fungi are creatures that attach to plant roots and offer a huge range of benefits in return for a supply of glucose from their host.
• These remarkable creatures are responsible for over 30% of the planet’s humus. The loss of 2/3 of our soil humus to the atmosphere can be directly linked to the decline in mycorrhizal fungi.
• Soil life analysis reveals that up to 90% of these creatures have been destroyed with modern farming techniques.
TRICHODERMA’S MANY ROLES • Trichoderma is a well researched predatory
fungi known to control more than 30 soil and plant diseases.
• It is also a voracious cellulose digester that can convert fibrous crop residues into humus.
• TrichoSheild actively promotes plant growth via the release of supportive biochemicals.
• This organism also boosts nutrient uptake.
THE BENEFITS OF TRICHODERMA
• Like AM fungi, Trichoderma has been shown to boost nutrient uptake and research demonstrates improved uptake of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and calcium.
• Growers report potential reductions in fertiliser of 20% to 50%. It is actually advisable to reduce fertiliser rates or the response from both AM fungi and Trichoderma can be compromised.
• Trichoderma has also been very successful as a seed treatment in several countries. There is a claimed germination rate exceeding 95% and the seedlings grow more rapidly and have larger root systems There is also more tillering and reduced maturity time in the treated crop.

The Humate Phenomenon • The most important input in biological agriculture is
humates and NTS is a recognised leader in this field.
• Humates address many of the issues confronting modern agriculture including the need to reduce reliability on petrochemicals, to conserve moisture and the urgent need to build humus.
• Humates include humic and fulvic acid and the raw brown coal from which these potent substances are derived.
How Humates Work • Humates increase the permeability of the cell membrane
(called “cell sensitisation”) to allow a 30 to 34% increase
in nutrient uptake.
• They are also the most powerful natural chelating agents,
further magnifying the performance of applied and existing
soil minerals.
• Both humic and fulvic acid share this capacity to magnify
but fulvic acid is generally preferred for use with foliars
while humic acid is used with fertilisers in the soil.
• Soil enzymes can be stabilised and inactivated by humates.
Pathogens often release enzymes to break down the plant’s
defense system. These enzymes can bind to humates and
as a result the pathogens are unable to invade potential host
plants.
• Soil temperature and water evaporation rates are
stabilised by humates. The insulating properties of humates
helps maintain soil temperature uniformity. This is important
in cold spells and heat waves and serves to support soil
life.
• Humates also regulate the membrane permeability of
micro-organisms allowing them to utilise nutrients more
effectively. The complexing effect of humates on trace
minerals also increases their availability to microbes.
• Humates promote the production of plant root exudates
which provide a food source for microbes
How Humates Work
Humic / Fulvic Acid – Differences between Products • Humic acid is solubilised from brown coal with potassium
hydroxide so the end product is very alkaline and termed a potassium humate.
• Humic acid differs from fulvic acid in that it is ten times larger, more stable in the soil and it is less compatible with fertilisers and farm chemicals.
• There is a major quality/performance difference between humates derived from lignite and those extracted from leonardite coal.
• Leonardite is more oxidised and much more
active. You haven’t discovered the potential of
humates until you have trialed leonardite-based
humic acid.
• Promotes root growth
• Dissolves minerals
• Prolongs production
• Provides growth promotion
• Serves as a ‘second sun’
• Detoxifies pollutants
• Magnifies nutrient uptake
• Improves moisture retention
• Promotes bacteria
• A powerful electrolyte (capable of
facilitating electrical reactions)
Fulvic Acid – More Than a Foliar
Soluble Humate Granules and DAP/MAP • Liquid urea is compatible with humic acid but most other
fertilisers are acidic, causing the humic acid to coagulate
and block filters.
• These granules can be combined with DAP/MAP at a rate of
5% to achieve a stable phosphate humate.
• The dense carbon buffers the burning power of phosphoric
acid while also stimulating the mycorrhizal fungi that would
otherwise be sizzled.
How Humates Work • Humates are also powerhouse bio-promotants. Humic acid
is a potent fungal stimulant while fulvic acid is a powerful bacterial promotant.
• Humic acid is a highly effective tool to build humus as it promotes both cellulose digesting fungi and mycorrhizal fungi.
• Fungi bunch together mini aggregates to create larger soil particles.
• This “crumb structure” is the most
desirable soil structure. Gas exchange is
maximised and there is no puddling (and
associated loss of nitrogen).
10 Hot Tips to Profit From Humates
1. Young plants are more responsive to both humic and fulvic acid.
Younger tissues have more active transport mechanisms to move
nutrients to sites of metabolic activity. Foliar application is most
successful is this context
2. Humates are excellent brix-builders – enhanced carbohydrate
production can be detected with a refractometer within 24 – 48
hours (increased quality and yield).
3. A combination of humic and fulvic acid has been shown to be most
effective for promoting root growth.

4. It may take up to three applications of soluble humates to achieve sufficient
concentration in the roots to allow 20 – 30% of the humic acid to be transported through
the shoots and leaves. i.e you will always see root growth before shoot growth when top
dressing humates.
5. Humic acid in small amounts has been shown to “structure water”. The water molecules
become more organised and arranged like fragments of ice structure. The water gains the
desirable properties of “melted water” improving plant nutrition (Masaru Emoto).

6. Humates can be used to lower nitrate levels or prevent the accumulation of nitrate in plants with obvious stock health benefits. In this situation humates also increase potassium uptake which is normally inhibited by excess nitrates.

7. If carbon sequestration is to be a new income stream in agriculture, then humates are a major tool. Humates are the most profound promotant of the creatures that build stable carbon in the soil (Cellulose digesting fungi).

8. Don’t discard the insoluble sludge (15%) when dissolving Soluble Humate Granules as it
is the sponge-like, mineral-dense humin fraction which is an excellent fertility builder.
9. Humic acid is a powerhouse tool for drought resistance. The large surface area and
internal electrical charges help hold water in the root zone. Humates serve as sponges
which can hold 7 times their volume in water. That stored water also facilitates nutrient
transfer. i.e. potassium deficiencies in droughts.

Cell Strengthening With Silica
• Silica is the other mineral involved in cell strength and it is very
often lacking in most soil tests. 100 ppm of soluble silica is
required, but most soils struggle to make 30 ppm.
• It appears that something we have done in modern agriculture has
stemmed the flow of plant-available silica from the clay and sand in
the soil.
• Silica is also involved in stem strength, it boosts photosynthesis
and protects the plant from sodium and heavy metal toxicity and it
is also supports immune response.
• Silica is rapidly absorbed and built into the cell wall. In the case of
insect and disease attack, the plant draws upon available silica to
strengthen the cell walls surrounding the attack site. A little soluble
silica should be applied often to ensure it is available when
needed.

DIATOMS
• A more versatile option is based upon a substance called
diatomaceous earth.
• Diatoms are microscopic creatures that accumulated in lakes
and ponds millions of years ago. When these communities
died out only their silica-rich (85% silica dioxide), outer
skeleton remained and is called diatomaceous earth.
• When this material is micronised down to 5 microns and held
in liquid suspension (Dia-Life™) it can be applied to soil and
crops in small amounts to achieve a significant increase in
silica in the leaf.
Plant Available Silica Options
• Potassium Silicate can be applied by
fertigation or foliar but it must be
remembered that it is incompatible with
almost everything except fulvic acid and
kelp.
