How to use these lesson plans
This lesson plan packet contains the following:
Book list
1-page weekly lesson plan grid o Alternate weekly grids for 4 day, 3 day, and 2 day programs
5 daily lesson plan sheets
2-page centers explanation
Printables
Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books
you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.
The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds,
whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.
The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if
you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just print the templates and handwrite your plans.
The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are
included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.
The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There
are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.
You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

Goldilocks Book List
Since this theme is focused on a particular story, read alouds can be handled a few different
ways. Read the traditional story first, and then read different variations of the main story. You
can also supplement the read alouds with books about real bears, as well as fictional stories
about what happens after the traditional version. Below are suggestions encompassing all of
those ideas. Be sure to check out Fantastic Fun and Learning’s Goldilocks book list for
explanations about some of the stories below.

Materials Read Aloud Oats; items for sorting by size Goldilocks and the Three Bears
Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Small, Medium, Large Introduce the vocabulary ‘small’,
‘medium’, and ‘large’ to the children. Bring out a few sets of items to
illustrate what each word means (for example, three differently-sized
bowls). Hold the large bowl up and say “large”, and so forth. Have the kids help you determine which word best
describes each item in the set.
Oats Sensory Writing Tray Place oats in a shallow tray. Children
use their fingers to make designs, numbers, letters, or words. Use the
printable word or letter cards as prompts.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Real Bears Read a book about real bears. Record
some facts you learned about real bears in a science journal.
Size Collection Review sizes small, medium and large.
Bring out similar items of different sizes. (spoons, bowls, cups, writing
utensils, pape,r etc.). Place the objects in order by size (for example,
baby spoon, tablespoon, serving spoon). Discuss the vocabulary small,
medium, and large as you do.

Materials Read Aloud Oatmeal; thermometer (if possible);
props for story retelling Goldilocks and Just One Bear
Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Rhyming Words Discuss rhyming words. Brainstorm a list of words that rhymes with "bear." If kids are not quite ready to generate a list of ideas, say 2 words, and have
kids give a thumbs up if they are rhyming words.
Story Retelling Act out the series of events in the
story. (Use real kids, stuffed animals, or paper cutouts as characters). Let
kids help set up props and such to add to the storytelling.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Make Porridge Get creative with the ingredients or
just use a pre-made package of oatmeal. Discuss how the ingredients
change after being heated.
Introduce Temperature Discuss temperature. Make a list of foods that taste great cold and a list of foods that taste great warm/hot.

Materials Read Aloud Construction paper; thermometer Rubia and the Three Osos
Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Do You Like Porridge Graph Ask each child if they enjoyed the
porridge made earlier in the week. If you don’t make porridge, ask if the
children like oatmeal at home. Make a graph out of large chart paper, with the question written at the top and a column each for ‘yes’ and ‘no’. Kids can write their names directly on the chart, or they can add a bear shape
with their name on it to the chart.
Beginning Sound Sort Papa Bear gets all the pictures that start with the /p/ sound. Mama Bear
gets all the /m/ words. Baby Bear gets all the /b/ words. Be sure to make the /b/ and /p/ sounds distinctive so it’s
easier for the children to differentiate between the two sounds.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Bear Feet Make a construction paper example of a bear’s foot. Compare human feet to the bear foot. Trace each child’s feet
and label with name.
Temperature Recording Continue discussing temperature. Check the local temperature at
different times of day and compare. If you have a real thermometer, move it to different locations and compare the temperature in different areas or
at different times of day.

Materials Read Aloud Gummy bears; counting bears (or
other bear manipulatives) Goldilocks Returns
Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Compare Bears Discuss real and make believe. Make a
Venn diagram that compares with "Real Bears" and "Make Believe
Bears". Brainstorm ideas for filling the diagram together.
Emergent Reader Read through the book together,
pointing to the words and talking about big versus little. Alternatively, have children help assemble the book by
cutting out and gluing/taping the appropriate illustrations to each page.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Gummy Bear Experiment Make predictions about what might happen to gummy bears in water. Place a gummy bear in water and
observe what happens. Compare it to a gummy bear not in water. Try this with different liquids, and be sure to
record results.
Bear Patterns Teach kids how to fold a square piece of paper and cut their own hearts (you may need to draw the line for younger
kids to cut). Discuss symmetry throughout the process.

Materials Read Aloud Counting bears (or other bear
manipulatives) A Chair for Baby Bear
Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy
Bear Feet Ordering Order the foot cutouts from the “bear feet” activity earlier in the week. Start
with the bear’s foot, and continue through to the smallest footprint.
Make observations with the children. Who has the biggest feet in the class?
Which feet are the smallest?
Write Your Own Ending Write a story about what happens
after the end of the traditional story. Does Goldilocks ever come back? This could be done individually or as a small
group. If the children make them individually, they could be compiled
into a class book.
Small Group Science Small Group Math
Opposites Discuss the use of opposites in the
story (hot/cold, hard/soft, etc.). Brainstorm a list of opposites. Act out
the ones that you can (fast/slow, over/under, short/tall, etc.).
Bear Numbers Use toy bears to “write” numbers.
Discuss number formation while doing so.

Centers
Arts & Crafts Design a Chair – Use recyclables (like cardboard boxes and tubes) to make a new chair for Baby Bear. Be sure to paint and decorate it. Paper Plate Characters – Make the bears
and Goldilocks out of paper plates. Paint
the plates. Then make the faces using
googly eyes, construction paper, yarn,
etc. Can be used as masks while retelling
the story, too.
Science Real Bears - Place non-fiction books in a basket, along with pictures of real bears. Children can draw pictures of real bears in their science journals, jotting down interesting facts. Bear Bridges - Build bridges for toy bears, using plastic/paper cups and craft sticks.
Pretend Play
Teddy Bear Picnic – Plan a teddy bear picnic. Write down your shopping list, and make invitations for your guests. Then pretend you’re on a picnic with your friends and their teddy bears. The Bears’ House – Set up the dramatic play center like the three bears’ house. Children can retell the story, or they can make up their own version.
Literacy Word Making - Use magnetic letters or other alphabet manipulatives to make words based on the story. Letter cards - Print the letters, cut in half, and laminate for durability. Children match the uppercase and lowercase letters.

Centers
Math Number Cards - Children can use the number cards for matching, counting, and numerical order. Add candy hearts or small heart manipulatives to explore one-to-one correspondence. Heart 10-Frames - Use candy hearts, printable hearts, play dough, or other heart manipulatives with the 10-frames.
Sensory Candy Heart Water Play – Use candy hearts, water, and glitter (optional) for this easy sensory bin. Heart Play Dough – Create various colors of play dough. Add heart cookie cutters, foam hearts, and other heart manipulatives. See this idea for inspiration
Building
Heart Tower - Attach the heart number cards to blocks or LEGO. See how high you can make the tower. Building Hearts - Use LEGO bricks, wooden blocks, or any type of block to build hearts. See if you can make them completely symmetrical.

The thing is, dear parent, that I can only talk to you about YOUR child. So, what I can tell you is this: If ever, at any point, YOUR child, or any of your children, becomes THAT child… I will not share your personal family business with other parents in the classroom. I will communicate with you frequently, clearly, and kindly. I will make sure there are tissues nearby at all our meetings, and if you let me, I will hold your hand when you cry. I will advocate for your child and family to receive the highest quality of specialist services, and I will cooperate with those professionals to the fullest possible extent. I will make sure your child gets extra love and affection when she needs it most. I will be a voice for your child in our school community. I will, no matter what happens, continue to look for, and to find, the good, amazing, special, and wonderful things about your child. I will remind him and YOU of those good amazing special wonderful things, over and over again. And when another parent comes to me, with concerns about YOUR child… I will tell them all of this, all over again. G o l d i l o c k s
