On the Cover This month’s cover titled, “A Splash of Yellow” by Denny Weigand

was the first place winner of the Illustrative catagory.for the 2013 awards presented at the March 20th PPGBA meeting.

Denny tells us, “The image is a combination of many applications, starting with a photograph, changing the background to even the tones, importing some Illustrator vector graphics, enhancing the image in Lightroom and Photoshop, and finishing off, for me the most enjoyable part, in Corel Painter.

The most difficult part was to get the shading and shadows correctly represented. I absolutely love the painting part, sometimes wondering which I love most: photography or painting.”

The Bulletin 5April 2014

If you didn’t attend Matthew Jordan

Smith’s seminar and day after in Feb,

you missed a fun and informative two day

event. The regular monthly meeting was

held at the Academy of Art University

on Post Street. In addition to our regular

members, university students, faculty

and the Photography Department were

present. Alexis Cuarezma, our past

PPGBA president, started by sending off

our departing board member, Stephanie

Scambos with a bouquet of flowers.

Stephanie will be greatly missed as she

starts anew in her home state of Virginia.

Matthew was well received and many in the audience had a chance to meet and chat after his program session. Matthew spoke about his path to fashion, commercial and celebrity photography while providing a slide show. He emphasized the importance of personal connections and networking which led to future photo assignments. Matthew also answered questions from the audience as the AAU video department recorded the event.

The second day was held at Mills College in Oakland. This campus is well suited to the photography environment and many of our past seminars as well as Golden Gate Schools classes were held there.

I would like to thank Paolo Salcido our first Vice President, with his industry connections, to providing logistics and bringing in talent from City Models as well as makeup and hair stylists. The studio equipment lighting and backgrounds were provided by Calumet, along with technical assistants. Sony provided cameras as well as hosting Matthew.

The campus was buzzing with activity, participants clicking camera shutters while directing their subjects as strobes popped. This live, hands on experience, can not be replicated by just watching free internet programs and webinars on photography.

A few of the participants were able to share and have Matthew critique their images, one brought their portfolio.

In closing the seminar was a bonafide success for everyone involved, especially our organization. We had a chance to collaborate with other industry professionals and sponsors. Many of our participants were non PPGBA members and we hope to invite these folks into our fold. PPGBA will be scheduling other hands on events in coming months. October is one with Brooke Shaden as our featured speaker and day after seminar. Watch for future announcements. Again make use of your valuable membership and participate in our special events and always, enter our monthly image competition. Keep building on your path to excellence.

Photo School Needs HelpPhotographer Brooke Shaden (PPGBA 2012

seminar speaker, and she’ll be back with us this fall!) is doing a big fundraiser to raise money for a photo school in India for survivors of human trafficking.

Brooke tells us:Last year I traveled to Kolkata, India with an

organization called Blossomy that hosts workshops for survivors of human trafficking. I went on a whim, never having been before and new to the cause, with the hope that I would be able to help in some way, big or small. I went home feeling as though I had been changed forever, and wanted to do more.

I was teaching photography to survivors of human trafficking. While I taught the camera basics, we also focused on self-portraiture and the lasting impact of finding self-confidence and understanding that everyone has a story to tell. Something was missing from my experience, and that was a lasting impact that would be able to ripple through more than a small group of women.

With the help of Blossomy and photographer Dave Junion, we want to bring a school of photography to Kolkata, India in which the individuals going through those shelter homes have access to free education in exchange for a certificate in photography as well as the opportunity for a future in a career that can provide confidence and hope.

The school that we propose would be self-sustaining after two years. The way that it works is simple: the school is attached to a fully functioning studio in which the clients that pay for portraits sessions have their money go straight back into the school system, thus providing income for those working in the school as well as those working in the studio.

If a student takes the 5-month course twice, they become eligible to enlist as educators in the school. At that point, they also have the option of working in the studio as a main photographer, retoucher, or manger. Therefore, those were were once students in the school can then filter back through the system to work as a teacher or photographer to help keep the school running.

We are looking for $25,000 to get the school up and running. After two years we do hope for the school to be creating enough income to pay those running it as well as keep it going for years to come, but in the meantime, we need to get things going. This money will go towards rent, educational tools like desks, cameras, laptops, and other necessities, travel expenses, educator payment, and so much more.

I believe that if everyone donated just a single dollar, we could raise enough money to get this school off the ground...and think of how many lives could be changed, or saved, because of it. I am so incredibly passionate about this project and I thank you for taking the time to consider it. I am grateful for you.

If you have a few minutes, please check this fundraiser page to learn more and donate or share if this is something you might be interested in backing.

Why Participate?Participating in PPA's photographic competitions gives you the opportunity to:· Engage with the passionate and supportive photographic competition community· Improve upon your finest work (You can do that math, right? You'll get better!)· Earn recognition and admiration from your peers· As a result, improve your businessWith most things, you get what you put into it, but with the IPC, it's what you do next that matters. You'll leave with the motivation and inspiration to be more.

So what are you waiting for? Entries for this year's International Photographic Competition will be accepted May 26 - June 26 and the judging will take place August 3-7 at Gwinnett Tech in Lawrenceville, GA. Download the 2014 Photographic Open Rules http://www.ppa.com/files/pdfs/ipc_po_rules2014.pdfDownload the 2014 Master Artist Rules http://www.ppa.com/files/pdfs/ipc_ma_rules2014.pdf For every photo you take, there's a competition to enterReally, there are that many competitions. To help you understand why they are worth your time—and entry fees—see below:· Local Competitions· State Competitions· District Competitions· International Photographic Competition Local CompetitionsNew to the game? Get your feet wet by competing in your PPA affiliated local guilds’ or associations’ competitions. It will help ease your nerves and feel things out. You also score a round of critiquing, increasing your chances for success at the next level. Check theLoop for more advice on entering local competitions.

State CompetitionsCompetition critiques at this level are often held live, providing insight into improving your work. It’s the perfect place to start if you don’t have access to a local guild or association. Check theLoop for more advice on entering state competitions. District CompetitionsThis is your last chance to gather critiques and advice before the International Photographic Competition (IPC). (You’ll want those critiques and advice. Even if getting your work critiqued scares you, the new perspectives are oh so worth it.) PPA members are assigned a district based on where they live (Southwest, Northcentral, Western, Northeast, Southeast and Asia Pacific). Wow them here and you could earn a Seal of Approval. That’s a big deal. PPA's International Photographic Competition (IPC*)And now things are rollin’—you’ve got game, playa! You’re competing with PPA members from across the globe now and this ain’t a competition playground: this level of competition (the IPC) actually involves two judgings. The first one determines if your images are merit-worthy (yeah, that’s industry-speak to say you made the first cut). If they are, you earn a second judging, which could possibly earn you an additional merit and a spot in the Loan Collection (our way of saying that your work is the “best of the best”). Images that earn a Seal of Approval at the district level are also considered for the Loan Collection, and are published in the annual Loan Collection book AND exhibited at Imaging USA. Participating in the IPC can help you earn your PPA degree: earn enough merits and you’ll earn a Master of Photography degree in no time. (See why that’s such a big deal http://www.ppa.com/clientapps/degrees/ )

A motion was made and passed that we use PPA’s email service three times with the goal of enticing local PPA members to attend a PPGBA meeting with a free meeting pass.
