TaramaTi Baradari Located at ibrahimbagh on Gandipet road and just outside the Golconda Fort, Taramati Baradari is one of the popular monuments of Hyderabad. Taramati Baradari was constructed on the banks of the musi river, during the reign of ibrahim Quli Qutub Shah - the second Sultan of Golconda. The Baradari was named Taramati by the Seventh Sultan of Golconda, abdullah Qutub Shah as a tribute to his favorite courtesan, Taramati.02 Point of View bi-monthly | May 2016 Issue | VOL. 18

e Taramati Baradari consists of a music hall with 12 entrances. it was used as an auditorium. Taramati has been situated on the top of the hill, which was done so as to avoid any disturbance to the sound from the population of the surrounding area. its hall is spacious, and provides excellent acoustics. This huge structure is in the shape of semi-arch and it opens into an art gallery.

The Taramati Baradari has undergone several renovations recently and the Tourism ministry has refurbished areas and added new features to attract tourists. The open pavilion now includes facilities like an air-cooled theatre with capacity of 500 people, open-air auditorium with capacity of 1600 people where events and performances are held, Banquet Hall with capacity of 250, and multi-cuisine restaurant offering local and international cuisine.

There are several fables surrounding TaramariBaradari, most of which speak of the affection between the then Sultan of Golconda and Taramati. Some claim that the Baradari was in direct line of sight to the Golconda Fort, from where the Sultan would watch Taramati dance at this Sarai. Others claim that when Taramati sang at the Baradari, the wind would carry her voice to the Fort where the Sultan would listen to her.

There are also stories that say there were two sisters, Taramati and Premamati who were such skilled artists that they danced on a tight rope between the Taramati Baradari and the Golconda Fort.

regardless of what the true purpose of and the stories relating to the Taramati Baradari are, the fact is that the place still possesses a special old-world charm where one can feel history come alive.

Mission KaKatiya STArTIng To beAr fruIT for fArmerS

06 Point of View bi-monthly | May 2016 Issue | VOL. 18

The mission Kakatiya is a program developed by the Telangana government with a view to restore over 45,000 tanks and lakes in the Telangana state. By restoring almost all the tanks, it is expected that as much as 250~270 TmC of water will become available for agricultural, irrigational, livestock and drinking water needs. Under mission Kakatiya, such processes as tanks de-silting, feeder channels re-sectioning, repairs to bunds, wa-ter sluices and weirs, and increasing of full tank level are expected toboost the irrigation potential in the state.

The Kakatiya mission is proving to be especially beneficial to the agricultural sector by not only improving the micro-irrigation situation in the state, but also by helping small farmers through more efficient cultivation and provision of silt. a pilot study conducted by iCriSaT (international Crops research institute for the Semi-arid Tropics) recently re-vealed that when local farmers used silt lifted from the water bodies in their respective fields, moisture retention went up by four to seven days. Furthermore, the addition of

Page 7: POV Newsletter May 2016

50-375 tractor loads per hectare of silt from tanks and water bodies increased available water content by 0.002 to 0.032 grams in the soil.

There was also an improvement in clay content by 30-40%. This increase in clay content enables reduction of water loss through leaching due to improved Cation Ex-change Capacity (CEC)/ the ability to absorb nutrients. moreover, there was also an increase in the level of available Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus and a slight re-duction in sulphur.

a 30% reduction in chemicals was also seen as a result of the silt addition, thereby re-ducing the number of wettings required by the crops. Plots which had received fresh silt had higher plant population and plant height, which invariably resulted in higher yield and income for farmers. in certain areas (particularly for cotton), the increase in yield was as high as 1000 kg per hectare. Owing to increased nitrogen and phosphorous, the reliance on fertilizers was reduced and farmers saw savings in fertilizers ranging from rs. 2500 to rs. 3750 per hectare.

The findings were presented to the Central Government by the irrigation department. it is likely that the Kakatiya mission will be replicated on a national scale.
