Letter to the Editor,Imagine a country…

Whose leader…

Assumed power in a highly irregular,if not illegal, election. He did notreceive a majority of votes cast; somepeople were not allowed to vote orhave their votes counted. (Relativesand friends of the “winner” helpedensure the outcome.)

When he took office, surrounded him-self with a group of people who haveas their agenda world dominationthrough future wars. (This country hasstockpiled weapons of mass destruc-tion.)

Responded to a terrorist attack by ly-ing in order to go to war against acountry which had not attacked thiscountry. (Millions of people aroundthe world demonstrated in favor of apeaceful approach, of a more focused

search for terrorists, and of not goingto war against a sovereign nation. Theleader did not listen.)

Plunged his own nation into debt – thelargest federal deficit in the nation’shistory – in order to fight the war. (Themoney could be spent helping coun-tries where people lack jobs, healthcare, enough food, education, etc. Hisown country has many people withoutthose things, as well. This nation onceled the world in aid to the world’spoor. It is now dead last among the 22industrialized nations in giving thataid.)

Gives tax cuts to the wealthy.

When Congress will not pass legisla-tion he wants, gets what he wantsthrough Executive Order.

Has made his country the most hatednation in the world.

As a state governor changed pollutionlaws to favor power and oil companies(that state is now the most polluted inthe country), bankrupted the treasuryas he is now bankrupting the nationaltreasury, and allowed the most execu-tions by any governor in the country’shistory, among other acts.

Operates in secret, giving very fewpress conferences.

Has the lowest IQ of any 12 presi-dents, evaluated, from FDR to thepresent.

Viciously attacks any candidate run-ning against him.

Imagine such a country…you live there.Remember these things (they are docu-mented and there are many other seriousthings) when you vote in November.

Fire Season AlertBy Gayle Wilcox

POVFD Chief

All citizens should be well prepared forour fire season. If we plan and prepare asa community; we will be more able toescape the fire season with no damage orloss of life.

The first step is to remember to immedi-ately phone 911 if you see fire, think yousee fire or smell unexplained smoke. Wewould rather respond to a false alarmthan to an out of control fire that wasphoned in late.

You need to make your property andhome as safe from fire as possible.

1. Follow all burn permit rules andregulations. Permits are required forall burn barrels and open burns.Call 332-5383 for permit info.

2. Remove overhanging limbs – espe-cially dead ones and ones close toflue outlets.

3. Remove all flammable material fromagainst buildings, under foundationsand in eaves. Remove leaves, mossand needles from gutters and be-tween shingles.

4. Outdoor fireplaces and barbecuesshould be maintained in good work-ing order, screened when appropri-ate, be clear of surrounding debrisand overhanging limbs. Extremecaution should be used in disposingof brickets. Have a method of extin-guishing fire close at hand.

5. Make sure you road is clear for ourfire apparatus. We will be happy toinspect your road for access if youcall us. (Daytime 332-0445). Thecurrent County driveway specifica-tions require a 16-foot wide clear-ance and must include a vehicleturnaround if your driveway is long-er than 150 feet. For additionaldetails, please consult the CountyPlanning Department.

6. Wood piles should be uphill and ata safe distance from your home.

7. Rake leaves and twigs away fromyour home.

8. Keep hoses attached to your outsidehose bibs.

9. Keep grass mowed, especially whendry.

10. Remove accumulations of deadwood, limbs and shrubs from undertrees.

11. Have an escape plan from your homeand your property.

12. Make sure your home has smokedetectors and that they are working.

13. Be aware of fire dangers and poten-tial dangers wherever you are. Lenda hand to a neighbor or friend if theycannot accomplish these tasks them-selves.

14. Call us (Port Orford Volunteer FireDepartment at 332-0445) if you haveany questions or concerns.

15. Call 911 for a fire emergency.

16. You must post your address so it isclear and visible from the road. Theambulance and fire crews need avisible address on your house and/or pointing to your house. Thissaves valuable time in locating yourresidence. The City of Port Orfordhas an ordinance requiring yourstreet address be visible.

With wildland fires burning and the po-tential for one to start in our community– Please make your property fire safe!

According to CircleID (www.circleid.com/article/602_0_1_0_C/) about80% of spam now originates from homecomputers just like yours. In fact, one ofthese much-detested computers mightvery well BE yours!

Spammers are feeling the heat and find-ing new ways to avoid it. Several spam-mers have recently been sued and at leastone has been sentenced to jail. One wayfor spammers to avoid capture is to takeover other people’s computers, and sendtheir spam from these “zombies” ratherthan send it directly from their own com-puter. This muddles the trail and makesthe spammer harder to locate and prose-cute. It also allows the spammer to sendmore messages more quickly. Just whatwe need. NOT! The exact number ofmachines that have been taken over (forall purposes) is unknown but very large. The whitehouse.gov web site had tochange their IP address recently becauseat least 250,000 computers were believedto be infected with a worm that was set toattack their old one.

Community Music NightThe Port Orford Arts Council sponsorsCommunity Music Night on Friday, June18, 7:00pm, at the Community Building. For more information contact Kass at332-7308 or the Port Orford Arts Coun-cil at 332-0487.

It is not difficult to take control of anunprotected computer and all computersare unprotected unless the owner takessignificant steps to protect it. (1. Applyall critical Windows Updates. 2. InstallAnti-Virus software. 3. Install firewallsoftware. 4. Keep all of this softwareup-to-date. 5. Keep yourself up todate so you understand the currentthreats!) As I reported recently, amachine can be subverted in no morethan 15 minutes and an unprotectedcomputer on the Internet lasts onlyabout 3 hours on average. (Note: that is3 hours total connect time, not one three-hour stretch!) http://www.cert.org/tech_tips/home_networks.html#I-B isa good starter list of questions and an-swers about security.

You should be aware of your computer’sonline activity. You can monitor thateasily by observing the little icon of twocomputer screens in the lower right handcorner of your monitor. Normally thescreens of these two computers appeardim. When your computer is sendingdata, one of them will “light up”. Whenreceiving data, the other lights up. Youwill see a little activity from time to time

even when you aren’t causing it. Nor-mally that is ok. If you see a significantamount of activity that you cannot ac-count for, then your computer may beunder attack or may already be takenover. It’s time to do some serious check-ing!

Note: This icon is displayed automati-cally when you connect to the Internetwith a modem. If your connection isNOT through a modem, then you need toenable the icon. To do so, go to ControlPanel / Network Connections and right-click on your network then choose “Prop-erties”. Near the bottom you should seea check box that says something like“Show icon…”. Make sure the box has acheck mark in it. You should then havethe icon showing at all times.

In May of 2003 the City of Port Orford received a violation for not reporting enough routine Coliform tests. Thisviolation was caused by the testing laboratory performing the wrong type of test for Fecal Coliform on a routine samplesubmitted for testing resulting in the State Drinking Water Program not accepting the test results. The results from thesample submitted were negative and at no time was the Public Health compromised. This matter was resolved with theState finally accepting the test results that were performed.
