The storms of last week may be past us but they left behind lots of water still flowing through our rivers and streams and more rain and wind on the way.

The Elk River Fish Hatchery has a lad-der with markings up to 12 feet where the returning hatchery salmon end their journey. The viewing deck is just above the 12 foot marker and is usually a place you can stand and watch the river flow by. At the height of the Wednesday-Thursday storm last week the river got up to 16 feet according to hatchery hosts David and Elizabeth Nelson. The river got high enough they had to move their truck and fifth wheel out of the host site because of the high waters. When we went there on Saturday morning the Elk had receded down to 10.6 feet at the fish ladder, a drop of five feet in two days. There was no apparent damage to the hatchery nor the private bridges, including the Swinging Bridge, which span the Elk River. Rainfall totals at the Hatchery which are tabulated ev-ery morning at 8:00am 3.84 inches on Wednesday, January 18, 11.47 inches on January 19, 3.28 inches on January 20, and 3.15 inches on January 21.

The Sixes River got dangerously close to inundating the Sixes Grange Building missing getting in the building by about one inch according to Grange member Ron Leitch. Just another couple of inch-es and it would have been above the first step leading into the building’s foyer.

The Port Orford-Langlois 2CJ School District sent out a news bulletin or flash alert as they call it on Tuesday afternoon at 3:06pm to parents, students and others telling them there would be no school on Wednesday because of the impend-ing storm. The District planned to have the two schools open on Thursday and even had buses sent out to pick up stu-dents but they were called off at 8:03am before school started and students taken back home. The schools were open on Friday but started two hours late.

On Thursday both Highways 38 and 126 were closed cutting off access to Inter-state 5 for many people. 126 was closed at Cushman due to high waters and 38 was closed between the Loon Lake cut-off and Scottsburg due to a large sink-hole. Highway 101 between Coos Bay and the California border remained open with some slide related problems in the south end of Curry County.

Elk River Road had two minor slides that blocked one lane in two separate

places as of Saturday morning and no road crew personnel in sight but some kind citizen had come along earlier with a chainsaw and cleared one lane so traf-fic could pass.

Coos Curry Electric Co-op came through last week relatively unscathed with an outage on the upper Elk River feeder which had some tree limbs fall on it causing the breakers to open the cir-cuit. According to CCED the tree limbs were removed soon after the problem was discovered and power was restored. Other than that the North Curry County area came through with flying colors thanks to the excellent linemen crew, management, and the program of private contractors removing trees and brush under the power lines; which is an ongo-ing project by CCEC to prevent power outages. to the DEQ but was not on the scale of problems suffered by Myrtle Point and Coquille. The spillage was very heavily diluted with rain water and ended up in Garrison Lake with very low exposure to the public of the problem. It did con-tain some raw sewage. The two pumps at the Wyoming lift station were both working but could not keep up with the flow. Total spill amount was 14,250 gal-lons. The City received 12.55 inches of rain from January 16 through January 22 according to Public Works Director Allan Wagner. On Monday, January 23 the crew continued mop up operations from the storm including removing a downed tree on Fifth Street which had fallen into the road. The Garrison Lake level on Monday afternoon, January 23, sat at 17 feet.

The Oregon Department of Transporta-tion reported some slide activity north of Brookings in the Cape Ferrelo area with one lane open to traffic as of late last week.

Port of Port Orford Manager Gary An-derson reported no wave overtopping or damage at the Port last week. The Port did prepare for up to 35 foot high seas under potential hurricane conditions by sandbagging the Port office, restrooms, and Griff’s Restaurant and having Coos Curry Electric shutting down the power on Wednesday night at 4:30pm. The Port was concerned about high winds knocking the power lines down and didn’t want loose electric lines on the dock. This last week the Port dodged the storm bullet. The National Weather Service office in Medford contacted the Port three times with weather updates last week as well as providing infor-mation on their website. They have not contacted the Port on the new storm which is hitting the area on Tuesday morning, January 24.

In other Port news the Dungeness crab catch total for the month of December for the Port of Port Orford was 303,549 pounds of crab landed from December 15 through December 31.

Letter To The Editor,Just wanted to comment on the status of our economy - specifically, our National Debt. No one can doubt that this country is in trouble, as I stated in last weeks “Letter to the Editors”. However, we have been warned in the past. Found an article, in the California Mining Journal, dated September 1992, just about twenty years ago. Written by Dave W. Parkhurst, titled “Congress is Killing our Economy”. To quote his final paragraph, “So, our current economic difficulties have been created entirely by the government bureaucracy and the U.S. Congress, and they now expect us to bail them out by increasing our debt load. At the same time, Congress is still doing everything it can to kill America’s economy - which means we cannot borrow enough money to bail our government out of this mess anyway.” The message is clear; now please don’t shoot the messenger!

Ocean FrontiersOcean Frontiers: The Dawn of a New Era in Ocean Stewardship will launch its national tour at a special event with Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, First Lady Cylvia Hayes, and a number of coastal leaders in Port Orford, Oregon on February 11 at the Savoy Theatre. Port Orford is featured in the film as a place where a local community has mo-bilized to manage and conserve ocean resources for today and for generations to come.

Green Fire Productions Executive Di-rector and producer of Ocean Frontiers’ Karen Meyer stated, “We are excited to present the solution-oriented, bi-partisan stories of Ocean Frontiers to the American public. This documentary clearly conveys that people across the country want to work together to sustain their coastal and ocean economies that depend on a healthy ocean.”

Ocean Frontiers takes us on an inspir-ing, 80-minute voyage to seaports and watersheds across the country—from the busy shipping lanes of Boston Har-bor to the small fishing community of Port Orford, Oregon; from the coral

reefs in the Florida Keys, to the nation’s premier seafood nursery in the Missis-sippi Delta and the cornfields of Iowa. Here we meet an intermingling of un-likely allies, of industrial shippers and whale biologists, pig farmers and wet-land ecologists, sport and commercial fishermen and snorkelers, and many more, all of them embarking on a new course of cooperation.

Leesa Cobb, Executive Director of the Port Orford Ocean Resource Team stated, “We are working hard to ensure our natural resource-based community will thrive into the future, and this is only possible with a healthy coastal environment that provides the jobs that support this community. We are proud to be featured in the film, and to co-host the world premiere of Ocean Frontiers together with twelve local organizations plus our elected local and state leaders.”

Governor Kitzhaber and First Lady Hayes will be joined by Port Orford Mayor Jim Auborn, Curry County Com-missioner David Itzen, and Oregon State Representatives Wayne Krieger (R-Gold Beach) and Arnie Roblan (D-Coos Bay) to celebrate the official pre-miere of Ocean Frontiers.

Oregon’s first two marine reserves be-gan operating earlier this year and they will provide important information about the economic and ecological ef-fects of this new management tool. State Representative Wayne Krieger, a strong supporter of Port Orford’s groundbreak-ing ecosystem-based work was instru-mental in securing the funds for the new Redfish Rocks science facility from the Oregon Legislature. He recently stated, “The benefit of the marine reserve will be in the science that will help us better manage our ocean resources.”

Film Premiere: Saturday February 11, 2012, 5:00-7:00pm at the Savoy The-atre. Doors open 4:30pm. Tickets cost $10. Must purchase tickets online at: www.oceanfrontiersportorford.event-brite.com

This Week In The GardenBy Jennifer Ewing

So, you’ve drawn your garden plan and purchased your seed. When do you start the seed? When do you put plants in the garden? No sense rushing the season with extra early plantings that will fail due to cold weather or keeping seedlings in pots too long, stressing their roots and stunting their growth. The catalog or the seed packets will tell you when to start seeds so you’re right on the money!

The seed packet says ‘start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last frost.’ What! After living all over this country in a myriad of climates, I decided that

using May 15 as my last frost date al-ways worked. Get a calendar, turn to May 15 and put a big zero there. Move backwards on the calendar to May 8 and write a big ‘1’. Keep moving backwards through April and into March marking the calendar in weekly increments 3,4,5 and so on, up to about 12.

The tomato seed packets says to start seed 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost so go to your calendar and somewhere in between the 6 and 8 you have marked, write the word ‘tomato’ and the names of any other seed that must be started 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost so write ‘basil’ on the calendar somewhere be-tween your indication of 4 to 6 weeks on the calendar. As the weeks go by, start those seeds that you have written in the appropriate time slot. By the time the seeds germinate and you pot them up one time into larger pots before they go into the garden, your plants will be ready at the right time.

See I found something for you to do with all of those free calendars that have been piling up!

RE: Mutual Aid

On behalf of the City of Port Orford, I would like to express our gratitude that the Board of Directors and the Fire Chief of the Port Orford Rural Fire Protection District have adopted the policy of automatic Mutual Aid from neighboring fire districts for incidents, especially structural fires, occurring in the City of Port Orford and surrounding area. Both the Langlois and Sixes Fire Districts and fire fighters welcome this policy and look forward toward working with Port Orford Fire Protection District fire fighters in protecting our communities. Every citizen in the city and our fire districts is well served by this decision, and we applaud your actions in initiating this policy. Anything that can be done to further increase cooperative training and responses between neighboring fire agencies benefits everyone. Thank you again for taking this action.

Letter To The Editor,We are writing to publicly recognize the Kalmiopsis Audubon Society for including the showing of Vanishing of the Bees at the recent Kalmiopsis Nature Film Festival held at the Savoy Theater in Port Orford. With more than a hundred participants, Coos County Beekeepers Association members were able to meet many citizens who are interested in the survival of honey bees and the production of local honey. Pat Reed was there to demonstrate his Warre top bar hive. The Coos Association meets on the third Saturday at 6:30pm in the OSU Extension Building in Myrtle Point. This opportunity to distribute information regarding the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program (www.oregonmasterbeekeeper.org or 541-737-5440) and to solicit contact information from people interested in establishing a Curry County Beekeepers Association. Although colony collapse has not been in the headlines recently, the future of the honey bee is still a major concern. The Oregon Coast has many unique climate factors that must be addressed for local beekeepers. This was an excellent event to inform the public. We also express

Carol Sing At Zion ChurchOn Sunday, January 29, the commu-nity is invited to a Soup and Sandwich luncheon at noon, immediately after worship services at Zion Church, 20th

and Washington Streets. Because of the great response to our Soup and Sand-wich supper along with our Carol Sing in December, we are doing it again in January,” said Pastor Ronn. “I guess it’s kind of an encore performance.”

The menu is Hot Turkey Noodle soup, Tennessee Pulled Pork Barbecue Sand-wiches and good fellowship. “In the cold of January, this is comfort food to warm us all up and we are encouraging our friends from the community to join us for lunch. And, of course, we invite anyone and everyone to join us for wor-ship at 11:00 am, immediately before the luncheon, as well!”

A free will offering will be taken with the funds going to the community and world outreach ministries of Zion Church.

Zion Church is a community of progres-sive Protestants (Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Disciples, etc.) that come together for worship, fellowship, study

and outreach at 20th and Washington Streets in Port Orford. Adult Christian Study at 10:00 am, worship and praise at 11:00 am, and fellowship and refresh-ments at noon every Sunday.
