The PKWs’ crest is only 5 m above the river bed, but the base is 10 to 12 m below this level to found the structure on the unweathered rock.

During the high floods, the downstreamflows are submerged.

Except during the floods, the reservoirlevel is maintained at the FSL for the irrigation and the hydropower station (12 MW) supplies.

Combination of gated spillway and PKW

Following the incident of the Hoho gravity dam (gatesjamming with overflow on the dam crest and on the banks), →

the present tendency in Vietnam is to avoid, if possible, using only gated spillway.

A combination of gates and PKW , considered as safer, isthen adopted for several new dams.

Former design : Creager weir

• Design Flood (500 years) = 641 m3/s

• Weir level (FSL) = 106.00 m

• MWL = 109.11 m

• Crest level of the dam = 110.50 m

• Length of the weir = 55 m

* When the construction of the first block of the spillway was at the level 100.50 m, it was decided to lower the MWL at 107.30 m.

Final design*: Labyrinth + PKW type B*

• Design Flood (500 years) = 641 m3/s

• Weir Level (FSL) = 105.30 m

• MWL = 107.30 m

• Crest level of the dam = 110.50 m

• Labyrinth length = 17 m

For this scheme (small HPP), the sizing of the PKW was carried out only with the utilization of the «standard model type A» provided by Hydrocoop in order to reduce the cost and the delay of the study.

Except the Van Phong Dam, note the very badquality of the concrete of the Vietnamese PKWscompared with the PKWs constructed in France : sofar these PKWs are generally constructed by Independent Power Producers at low cost and by incompetent contractors !

The development of PKW can be hindered by these bad examples !

The Dak Mi 2 DamPKW type B

RCC dam with H = 38 m and L =144 m

• The peak discharge of the check flood (1000-year) is 6 500 m3/s.

• The spillway includes a 2 gates-surfacespillway in the central part and two P.K weirs onthe two sides, with steps on the downstreamface and on the left bank.

• This alternative was selected as it allows:

– with the gates, to evacuate 3000 m3/sduring the design flood and to control thewater level during the first filling of thereservoir and in operation.

–with the P.K weirs, to evacuate 3500m3/s during the design flood with a shortspillway length (W=75 m), minimizing theexcavation on the left bank. Thecombination of the P.K weirs and thestepped spillway permits to reduce thesize of the stilling basin.

• The tests confirm that, even in the case the 2 gates are jammed during frequent floods (inf. to the 100-year flood), there is no overflow on the dam crest.

be possible to keep the same total width for the

weir, the chute and the plunging pool with the

following advantages:

- Improvement of the flow downstream the weir

- Cost savings for the weir and the piles in

foundation (reduction of the weir width).
