It is better to say, “How could a person such as you do such a thing?” Raise him up over the א ט ח; show him that such an act is beneath him. With kindness, the rebuke will have a lasting effect. Focus on Middos בס״דA letter from a Rebbi (based on interviews)

Dear Talmid,

R' Eliyahu Simcha Schustal זצ״ל lived his entire life with

minimal material riches. Outwardly, his Monsey home was similar to

the wooden bungalow shacks found in the Catskill Mountains. Inside,

however, it was a palace. It was a true מקדש מעט, a miniature בית

It .יראת שמים and קדשה ,תורה that shines from מלכות It had the .המקדש

is no wonder that he was זוכה to have children and sons-in-law who

are all from among the most successful מרביצי תורה in America. It is

also not coincidental that he was נפטר on the day of the counting of the

.splendor of splendor ,תפארת שבתפארת that is עומר

He was extremely close with his תלמידים and would try to

attend every שמחה, even in his later years. One ידתלמ recalled how in

his early days as the אש כוללר , R' Schustal travelled to Detroit. It was a

long journey that both he and his wife made together. It took them

several days to get there and a few days to return, and they stayed in

Detroit to fully participate in the שמחה for a few days. The entire trip

was more than a week.

Another תלמיד found himself in a sorry situation: his father

had a major physical ailment and was therefore able to attend his חתנה,

which was to take place in Europe. After consultation with the הנהלה,

R' Simcha flew on a grueling one-day flight, stayed for a few hours,

and took a late-night flight back to America. When this תלמיד heard of

R' Simcha’s פטירה, over 25 years later, his first words after " דין ברו

were, "Oh, I am so broken! What a special person! I remember "האמת

how he travelled to my wedding. I will never forget his kindness, and

it still gives me חזוק today. He came because my father couldn’t!" My תלמיד, R' Simcha’s father had a spark of דשרוח הק when

he named his son שמחה — joy — which defined his very essence. R'

Simcha imparted his שמחת החיים to all he met, leaving an everlasting

impression that made the experience uplifting!

…קיך מפני שיבה תקום והדרת פני זקן ויראת מאל

In the presence of an elderly person shall you rise, and you shall honor the presence of a sage, and you shall revere your G-d … (ויקרא יט:לב) deviates from the literal translation and renders the תרגום אונקלוס words מפני שיבה תקום as מן קדם דסבר באוריתא תקום, From one who is learned in והדרת פני זקן on the words (לב:) קידושין in גמרא you should stand. The תורהexplains that זקן also refers to a young person who is a תלמיד חכם. The חינו explains: the more one shows respect for a תלמיד חכם, the more one acquires a love for the תורה itself. This message, to appreciate the great love one should have for תורה, is found in other subtle ways too.

☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ ☼ As they entered the cemetery in Ponovezh, they walked slowly, heads down, with sad faces, befitting a funeral. But this was not a typical burial. This solemn group carried piles of tattered ספרים. They had come to properly bury the frayed holy books that had been gathered from shuls and .in the area. This was a quiet occasion, but quite routine בתי מדרשות They were therefore surprised when the Ponovezher Rav himself, R' Yosef Kahaneman, joined the procession, with a cheerful expression. His demeanor seemed to be somehow inappropriate, for he was a man whose entire life revolved around the teaching and spreading of תורה … but then, things went from inappropriate, to odd, to bizarre! Shockingly, after a few moments the Rav began to hum a נגון. While many tried to ignore the sound of the song, the Rav’s voice grew louder and soon he began to dance around in a circle, as if this were הקפות on שמחת תורה. This was just too absurd. The group stopped and stared. Finally, the Rav concluded his song and dance, turned to the men and began to explain. “When I came into the cemetery I noticed that many of you were conducting yourselves as though we were, חלילה, burying a ספר

.But it couldn’t be further from the truth .תורה “Please allow me to explain myself through a parable. When a mother gives her child a new set of clothing, she fully expects, and perhaps even hopes, that the child will wear through the clothing in due time. It is a sign of a healthy child who runs and plays. Of course, the mother does not want the child to be careless, but she knows that eventually the clothing will be torn or worn out, to the point where they will no longer be usable. If she thinks for a moment, she will realize how grateful she should be that her child is well enough to wear out his clothing.” The Rav glanced around and noticed a few people in the crowd begin to smile. “There are, unfortunately, two types of children who do not wear out their clothing. If parents are cruel and thoughtless, they forbid their child to run and play like all the other children. That child is forced to stay indoors, only dreaming of doing what other children do. The second is the tragedy of a crippled or paralyzed child. That child, sadly, does not have the capability of playing like other youngsters. A mother who sits in the park and sees children who are not able to play will be overjoyed that her child is able to do so.” The Rav lifted several of the torn ספרים and declared, “We have to be thankful that we have used these and learned through them to the point where they are worn and tattered. There are Jews all over the world who have cruel parents who don’t allow them to play. They live in countries where they are mistreated and persecuted. Their lives are at risk for the crime of learning תורה, and all they can do is sit in their rooms and watch the fortunate ones who can learn. Some of our brothers and sisters have been so far removed from תורה for so many years that they are, sadly, crippled and can only dream of being like those of us who can learn.” The Rav looked at the crowd and again began to hum his נגון.

This time, the others broke into song and danced along with him, and thanked ד׳ for allowing them to “wear out” the ספרים.

*The מצוה of גמילות חסדים, acts of kindness (e.g. lending) is applicable

for both men and women, rich or poor, each individual according to

their personal ability. The מצוה of lending money is similar to the מצוה

of giving צדקה; the תורה does not give a specific amount of money that a person

must lend to a fellow Jew in order to satisfy his obligation for this מצוה. Therefore,

it is possible for a individual to fulfill the מצוה of אם כסף תלוה with a minimum

amount of money. *This is intended only as a guide. Please review any real-life situations with a competent Rov.

*Since we only discuss 1-3 הלכות, it is important to consider these הלכות in the context

of the bigger picture. Use them as a starting point for further in depth study.

*Halacha Corner: עניני דיומא: הלכות ספירת העומר

Even for those who have the מנהג to refrain from wearing new

clothes during ספירה (or make a שהחינו during ספירה), many are

lenient and will wear & make the ברכה on new clothing for garments

worn on שבת during ספירה. Others are stringent even on שבת.

Both opinions permit wearing new undergarments during ספירה.
