Les miserables Alain Boublil & Michel Schonberg

Ten years ago I was a student at Dixie High School pursuing my own interests as an actress on stage. I still remember the moment when my teacher, Mr. Russ Saxton, announced that our class would be one of the first high schools in the country to produce the recently released high school edition of Les Miserables. I truly believe it was from my own “Les Mis” experience that my de-sire to pursue theatre as a profession was cemented. If you would have told me then that in ten years I would again be producing this iconic material as a theatre instructor in my own communi-ty, I would not have believed you… I truly believe in the impact that quality high school theatre can have in the life of its students. My colleagues and I have learned many things since the day we decided to produce this musical here at PVHS. I think we would all agree that directing this piece has been a completely different experience – it is very challenging material on a variety of fronts. In an effort to better prepare myself for directing this production, I exposed myself to as many performances of this show across the country that I could manage. In total I believe I saw over 11 different theatre compa-nies perform Les Miserables. My favorite being that of the recently released revival production currently playing on Broadway in New York City. What an experience that was… talking with Broadway cast members afterwards only fueled my desire to do this great work justice and bring what I learned back to St. George. Despite all efforts employed to prepare for this musical – it has been “… a struggle and a war…” to say the least!! I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the friends, colleagues, parent com-mittee members, collaborators, set builders, designers, all of our business sponsors, mothers, sewers, pit musicians, tech, stage management and students onstage who sacrificed so much to produce theatre like this. Theatre by nature is a collaborative process and PVHS would simply not have the theatre program it does without this fantastic TEAM to make it all come together. Thank you everyone! I so appreciate and value you, your talents and contributions! I am also grateful that I have the opportunity to come to work each day and work with great youth producing material that I value and that I believe matters. The time spent studying the text and music of Les Miserables and all of its encompassing messages of love, forgiveness and trans-formation has truly been a career highlight. As audience members I also wish to thank YOU for being here and supporting the great fine arts programs we have here at Pine View High – Enjoy the show! As a young French peasant, Jean Valjean steals a loaf of bread to feed his starving sister and her son. He is caught and is sent to prison; a hard labor camp. There he is branded with the number 24601. A prison guard, Javert, sternly exacts justice and punishment; strictly according to the law. At one point, Javert observes Valjean’s incredible strength while he is rowing in the galleys. Repeated escape attempts add years to Valjean’s prison term. Finally, after 19 years, he is released but has become hardened and bitter. Now on the outside his “ticket of leave”, that binds him to a life of parole, keeps him from being truly free to start a new life. He is shunned and despised. His miraculous change of heart starts when the Bishop of Digne tells the police that the silver Valjean stole from him in the night was freely given. The merciful Bishop blesses Valjean saying, “I have bought your soul for God.” He asks Valjean to take the silver to become an honest man. Eight years later, Valjean has become a successful factory owner and an exemplary mayor. He has taken the name Monsieur Madeleine. Having broken his parole Valjean is still being hunt-ed by Javert, who by now has become a police inspector. Their paths keep crossing in the inter-vening years since prison. As the story continues to unfold, Valjean learns to love as his life gets intertwined with the unfortunate Fantine and her ill-treated daughter, Cosette. His character is challenged when he has to choose whether or not to turn himself in as the real Jean Valjean to save a falsely accused man. His soul is stretched when he endangers his life to save a young, foolish insurgent named Marius - Cosette’s love.

ROBERT REIMER (Vocal Director) is in his fourth year at Pine View High School. Mr. Reimer grew up in the Seattle, Washington area and graduated from Auburn High School. He married Julene Sullivan in 1990 and graduated from BYU in 1993 with a major in Math Education and a minor in Computer Science Teaching. He started teaching math at Dixie High in 1993. Mr. Reimer graduated from SUU with a Master's Degree in 1998 with an emphasis in ESL. In 2002, Mr. Reimer took a sabbatical and certified in Choral and Vo-cal Music Education at Dixie State College. He taught the choirs at Snow Canyon Middle School (2 years) and Snow Canyon High School (7 years) and moved to Pine View High

School after Norman Lister retired in 2010. Mr. Reimer currently teaches Statis-tics and Calculus at Dixie State College as an adjunct instructor, teaches concur-rent enrollment statistics, college prep math and AP Music Theory at PVHS as well as directing the choirs. He and his wife have five beautiful daughters Brenna, Aleia, Kia, Kenya and Jade.

Ani Rogers (Director) was raised in St. George Utah, coming up through the Dixie cone-site and graduating from Dixie High School '04. Ani continued her education at Dixie State University and Southern Utah University before finally graduating from Brigham Young University with a B.A. in Theatre Arts Studies. Ani actively continues to seek opportu-nities to continue her education and recently graduated with an ESL endorsement through Utah Valley University. Ani has taught at Dixie Middle School, Dixon Middle School and is now in her third year teaching at Pine View High. She has di-rected and choreographed many one-act shows, theatre re-

views, talent shows and musicals including Once On This Island, Bye Bye Birdie, An-nie, High School Musical, The Sound of Music, The Rainmaker, The King and I and the world premier high school performance of Huebener written by Utah play-wright Thomas F. Rogers. Outside of her high school teaching commitments Ani was recently asked to direct St. George Musical Theatre’s opening production of The Sound of Music after spending nearly five years in the dark. Nothing could bring Ani more satisfaction then to return to her home and "give back" to the commu-nity that helped develop her character, ideals and love of theatre.

Ani would like to take the opportunity to dedicate this performance and express her gratitude to all senior students performing in Les Miserables. “This great group of kids are the first class I have ever seen “grow up” as I have worked directly with them in theatre for the past three years. I am so proud of who each of them have become as artists and more importantly as good people. Thank you for the good memories students! You will be missed…”

Jean Valjean NATHAN BENNION

Nathan is a Senior at Pine View High School and is beyond excited to be a part of Les Miserables. His family members are Panthers to the core, so his whole life has been filled with Pine View Theatre. At-tempting to walk in his

brothers' footsteps, he tried out for en-semble in Fiddler on the Roof his fresh-men year. Not once did he imagine that during his sophomore year he would be cast as Captain Georg Von Trapp in The Sound of Music or that as a junior he would portray the even more daunting role of the King of Siam in The King and I. Nathan loves singing anytime and anywhere he can (despite his sister's protesting), and he would like to thank Mr. Lister, Brody Perry and Mr. Reimer for their vocal coaching. He feels blessed to have been given these won-derful opportunities and to be able to work with the best actors and actresses that Pine View has to offer. He also knows that none of it would be possible without the unmatched talent and guid-ance of Ms. Rogers. She has believed in him and pushed him beyond where he would have pushed himself. He would like to sincerely thank her, his family, his friends, and his Heavenly Father for the endless support and love that he has received. “Thank you for four unforget-table years at Pine View.”

Javert JACOB HARRIS

Jacob is pleased with the opportunity to be a part of Les Misera-bles, his third produc-tion here at PVHS. He is excited to be able to play the role of Javert and would like to thank Ms. Rogers, Mr. Reimer and his vocal coach, Brody

Perry, for helping him reach this point. He would also like to thank his sister for getting him into theater.

Bishop SHANDON LEWIS

Shandon is a senior at

PVHS and has loved his theatre experiences here. He is ecstatic at this experience to be involved in Les Miser-ables and thanks Ms. Rogers for the oppor-tunity. He would also like to thank his par-ents and family for

helping him become involved in this art that is theatre. Looking forward to the rest of his time here at Pine View! Fantine AUBREY COLLARD

Aubrey is a senior at

Pine View High School and is ecstatic to have her first lead role as Fantine. She has been in previous musicals and plays including The Sound of Music and Hübener as ensemble and back stage production. She

would like to thank her mom and dad for

ADAPTATIONS OF THE NOV-EL “LES MISERABLES” . . .

Since Victor Hugo’s original publication of Les Miserables, there has been many adaptations in the form of books, films, mu-sicals, plays and even a few crea-tive but unsuccessful sequels. The following is a partial list:

1934 - This early film version lasted four and a half hours and was written and directed by Ray mond Bernard with the music sound track by Ar thur Honegger. It was praised for the com manding performance of Jean Valjean by Harry Baur.

1937 - Radio drama created by Orson Welles.

1978 - Film version starring Richard Jordan as Valjean and Anthony Perkins as Javert. This adaptation does well in portraying the beginning of the novel from the stolen bread and portrays Val jean’s years in prison.

“The greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in

spite of ourselves.”~Victor Hugo

VICTOR HUGO was born in Besancon, France

on February 26, 1802, to his mother Sophie Trebuche and his father Joseph-Leopold-Sigisbert. His father was a military officer who served under the famed Napoleon. Victor Hugo studied law between 1815 and 1818 though he never committed to practice. He was actually encouraged by his mother to pursue his literary career. He later founded the Conservateur Litteraire which was a journal in which he published his own poetry and work of his friends. Hugo’s innovative brand of Romanticism developed over the first decade of his career, and in 1831, he published Notre-Dame de Paris which is now widely known as The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This work highlights the harsh criticism of the society that degrades and shuns the hunchback Quasimodo. Being such a prolific writer, Hugo was established as one of the most celebrated literary figures in France by the 1840’s. Unfortunately, he stepped back from publishing his work following the accidental drowning of his daughter and her husband in 1843. In private, he began work on a piece of writing that would become Les Miserables. Hugo fled to Brussels following a coup in 1851. He lived in Brussels and in Britain until his return to France in 1870. Much of the work that Hugo published during this time conveys biting sarcasm and fierce social criticism; including Les Miserables. Though Hugo returned to France after 1870, a symbol of republican triumph, his later years were largely sad. He lost two sons between 1871 and 1873. His later works are somewhat darker than his earlier writing, focusing on themes of God, Satan and death. In 1878 he was stricken with cerebral congestion. He and his mistress, Juliette, continued to live in Paris for the rest of their lives. The street on which he lived was renamed Avenue Victor Hugo on the occasion of his 80th birthday in 1882. Juliette died the following year, and Victor Hugo died in Paris on May 22, 1885. He received a hero’s funeral and his body lay in state beneath the Arc de Triomphe before burial in the Pantheon. DRAMATURGY: LES MISERABLES

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE . . .

1775-1783, the American revolution following the Declaration of Inde-pendence gained freedom from the British monarchy.

1789-1799, inspired by the American revolution, the French revolution was a much bloodier and chaotic revolution involving the infamous “guillotine”. This revolution was not successful in resolving the on-going class disparity.

1832, the historical events used by Victor Hugo in Les Miserables in-cluding the actual “June Rebellion” which was a minor revolt against depressing economic conditions and widespread poverty. In this rebel-lion, 166 Frenchman died, 93 were rebels, and an additional 800 people wounded.

Most revolutions in world history have ended up in long bloody wars or in totalitarianism (Lenin, Stalin, Hitler) and, at the very least, dec-ades of instability. The American revolution was a rare exception; af-ter seven years of war, an independent and relatively stable country was born. As a new country, it quickly became the world’s best example of a free people and their unprecedented rise to economic prosperity, social opportunity, political balance and religious freedom.

ALAIN BOUBLIL . . . Boublil adapted Victor Hugo’s book to write the text for the musical version of Les Miserables. The two-year project was in collaboration with Schonberg and Herbert Kretzner (lyricist). Their production was first recorded as an album before the musical premiered in Paris in 1980. Years earlier, in 1973, Boublil and Schonberg produced their first musical, La Revolution Francaise which was hailed as the first ever staged French musical. Boublil has also collaborated on other award-winning shows such as Abracadabra and Miss Saigon.

CLAUDE-MICHEL SCHONBERG . . .

Schonberg played the role of Louis XVI in their first collaboration, La Revolution Francaise. Their London production of Les Miserables became the 3rd longest running musical in British history. Schonberg has since become involved in casting all the major Les Miserables

productions in the U.S., Japan and Australia.

DRAMATURGY: LES MISERABLES

HISTORICAL PARALLELS TO THE NOVEL LES MISERABLES . . . 1) Valjean’s character is based on the true life of Eugene

Vidocq, an ex-convict who becomes a successful busi-nessman noted for his philanthropy. Vidocq, in 1828, even saves one of his paper factory workers by lifting a heavy cart on his shoulders.

2) During the 1832 minor insurrection that is used in the novel, 30 year-old Hugo followed the sound of gun fire and walked the nearby streets in Paris and saw the barricades blocking his way. He took shelter from passing gun-fire in-between two building col-umns.

3) In 1841, Hugo himself saved a prostitute from arrest for assault. He used a short part of his conversation with the police in describing Valjean’s rescue of Fan-tine.

4) In 1846, Hugo witnessed the arrest of a bread thief while a well-dressed Duchess and her well fed child watched pitilessly from their coach.

Portrait of "Cosette" by Emile Bayard, from the

original edition of Les Misérables (1862)

LES MISERABLES -- The NOVEL . . .

The main thread of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables is the story of an ex-convict, Jean Valjean, who becomes a force for good but is haunted and hounded by his criminal past. Hugo wrote in his novel that this story was “a progress from evil to good … from corruption to life; the hydra at the beginning, the angel at the end.”

Sinclair described the novel as “one of the half-dozen greatest novels in the world.” It is one of the longest ever written at about 1,500 pages in the English version. Hugo lived at a time in France that still suffered from a caste system that left, in his words, “the degradation of man by poverty, the ruin of women by starvation and the dwarfing of childhood…”

He called the conditions of his day “social asphyxia” and concluded his preface with “so long as ignorance and misery remain on earth, books like this cannot be useless.” He wrote to his publisher, “I don’t know whether it will be read by everyone, but it is meant for everyone. Humankind’s wounds do not stop at the … lines drawn on maps.”

The title “Les Miserables” has, over the years, been variously translated as, “The Mis-erable”, “The Wretched”, “The Poor Ones”, “The Victims”, “The Disposed” and “The Miserable Ones”.
