“What ARE the 39 Steps?”, cries Richard Hannay as the final reel of Alfred Hitchcock’s early masterpiece unspools. The question is more loaded than Hannay might realize.  The 39 Steps is a wonderful comedic play and it has a long and varied history.

Hitchcock’s film, released to great acclaim in 1935, throws together a hero wrongly accused of murder, a wild journey through dangerous landscapes, a generous helping of wry humour, an examination of the battle between the sexes and, of course, a beautiful “Hitchcock Blonde”. All are signature ideas Hitchcock would return to again and again, notably in Young and Innocent, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Saboteur, North By Northwest and Frenzy, which owe more than their fair share to the plot machinations of The 39 Steps. Based on a 1914 novel by John Buchan, Hitchcock’s picture is markedly different than its source material. Buchan’s Hannay, the hero of five of his novels, deals with the outbreak of World War I and the political intrigues of the day. Hitchcock’s Hannay is equally entrenched in the early days of war during the turbulent year of 1935, but the director chose to put Hannay through his own personal, Hitchcockian obstacle course.

Along with screenwriter Charles Bennett, Hitchcock would reinvent The 39 Steps from the ground floor up, adding such memorable characters as music hall performer Mr. Memory and the mysterious and alluring Annabella Schmidt. Most important, Hitchcock and Bennett would add a love interest for Hannay. As played by Madeleine Carroll, Pamela proves to be a perfect foil for Robert Donat’s dashing Hannay.

In crafting his own version of Buchan’s adventure, Hitchcock left nothing untouched, even the meaning of the title. In fact, in the middle of writing the screenplay, it is said that Bennett paused to ask, “Wait a minute, what ARE the 39 Steps?” Hitchcock answered, “Oh, we’ll figure that out later.”

This particular production had a long and fairly complex gestation prior to arriving on the West End stage. Back in 1995 two writers based in the North of England, Nobby Dimon and Simon Corble came up with a version of The 39 Steps which toured with great success to small venues (village halls and small theatres).

dIreCtor’s note

Page 5: PLAYBILL - · PDF filePolice Car The Dark Moors McGarrigle Hotel ... (Toronto/Vancouver). ... Night (Theatre by the Bay), Gypsy, Big Time Operator (Theatre Sheridan),

This version was based primarily on John Buchan’s book. An element fixed at this point was the idea of just 4 actors playing all the parts: 3 men and a woman. Edward Snape of the production company Fiery Angel saw the production and liked the concept, but felt the text needed a fresh eye. He asked Patrick Barlow to adapt the script. Patrick decided that his adaptation would be based on the film rather than the book, as the film is more inherently dramatic.

What we get is an incredibly fast-paced romp through the story of Hitchcock’s film. It is an homage, an affectionate and very funny transposition of the film onto the stage. The film contains moments that are iconic: the train top chase, the Forth Bridge escape, Mr. Memory at the Palladium, the stockings scene. Much of the joy of the show is in seeing these moments recreated through the physicality and vocal talent of the 4 performers. But don’t worry, seeing the movie is not required to enjoy all this production has to offer. With Mark Llewellyn as Hannay, we get the consummate straight man, Erin Mackinnon brings her style, grace and beauty to the 3 romantic parts of Hannay’s adventure and then we have Sweeney MacArthur & Scott Carmichael crazily trying to keep up with the pace of the show by playing ALL the other parts. They are simply listed in the program as Clown 1 & 2 for a reason. The fun is seeing if they can pull it off.

We affectionately refer to this show as “what if Laurel & Hardy were stuck in a

Hitchcock spy movie?”.

Enjoy! - Robert Woodcock
