Physical Properties

Page 2: Physical Properties. What is Matter? Matter is – Anything that has mass and takes up space. – Ex. Solids, liquids, & gases. – ANYTHING = EVERYTHING

What is Matter?

• Matter is – Anything that has mass and takes up space.– Ex. Solids, liquids, & gases. – ANYTHING = EVERYTHING

What is Mass?

• Mass is – A measure of the amount of matter in an object.

• We use the Metric System* (In science) – g or kg– Ex. A paper clip has a mass of 1 g and 1 kg is equal to 2.2 pounds(lbs)

What is Weight?

• Weight is– The effect of gravity on mass.

• This changes depending on where you are.– For example: You weigh 100 lbs on earth• You weigh 16.6 lbs on the moon.

Volume & Density

• Volume is– The amount of space that an object takes up.

• We use– L (liters) for liquids– cm3 (centimeters cubed) for solid objects.

• Density is– How tightly an object’s mass is packed into it’s

volume.

Density, Mass, & Volume

• D= – Density

• M=– Mass

• V=– Volume

• Equation to remember: D= M/V or

What is an Element?

• An element is – A pure substance that is made of the same type of

matter. • An element CANNOT be– Broken down by physical OR chemical means.

• 92 occur in nature (natural) – The rest are man made (in lab)

• They are arranged by their– Atomic number on the periodic table.

What are Physical Properties?

• A physical property is a property that can be observed or measured– Without changing the substance itself.

• Ductile-– Can be pulled into a wire.

• Color, odor (how it smells), texture ( how it feels).

• Luster- – The way it reflects light.

More Physical Properties

• Hardness-– Resists being scratched

• Diamonds are the hardest and are a 10 on the MOHS scale.

• Conductivity-– How easily electricity or heat moves through it.

• Magnetism-– How it responds to a magnetic field. ( is it magnetic?)

• Malleable-– Can be hammered into sheets.

• Streak-– Color a mineral makes on a tile plate.

More Physical Properties

• Solubility-– How it dissolves in water. (Is it soluble?)

• Brittle-– How easily it breaks.

• Sonorous-– The sound produced when metal is struck. (Ex. A

bell)

What Physical Property am I?

• Ductile

• Luster
