Teaching Experience

Current Head of Secondary (International English National Curriculum) Belvedere British School, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Abu Dhabi, UAE

I am currently in charge of all elements of the running of the Secondary School. This is The School’s first IGCSE cohort and we are in the process of preparing for our first A Level delivery in 2017. My key responsibilities include overseeing the quality of teaching and learning, improving ICT provision and integration into an innovative and student centred

curriculum, data analysis and reporting, line managing and overseeing a team of 18 staff, liaising with ADEC, reviewing and implementing policies, delivering INSET and preparing sections 1 and 3 of The School’s SEF.

2015 – 2016 Head of Key Stage 3 (International English National Curriculum) The ABC Private School, Al Shamkha, Abu Dhabi, UAE

I joined The School prior to its opening and was involved in the development of all whole school systems, facilities and compliance in The School’s opening months. During a turbulent and very challenging year, I had responsibility for the running of the Secondary School, the line management and performance management of all Heads of Department, continued professional development, ensuring the quality of teaching and learning in the phase, policy writing and implementation, overseeing curriculum and timetable development. I also taught English Literature and Language to Grade 7 (Year 8). I sat on The Board of Trustees, School Improvement, Registration and Behaviour Committees. I set up a Teaching and Learning Committee, which aimed to support all teachers and develop best practise across The School by encouraging a personalised and diagnostic approach to CPD through the use of coaching triangles and a more structured and personalised training programme.

2013 – 2015 Specialist Leader in Education BCTTSA & The National College of Teaching & Leadership, UK

This was a consultative role in addition to my full time position at The Eastwood Academy. I was contracted out to schools across Essex that needed specialist support. I focused on developing leadership capacity, specifically providing middle leaders with the support to facilitate sustainable change and improve practice in their own schools. The role required a diagnostic yet personable approach, overcoming barriers to progress within establishments particularly by utilising effective data analysis, coaching and mentoring, facilitating and training, and joint action planning as tools for delivery.

2013 – 2015 Head of Department with responsibility for the delivery of all middle leaders’ INSET The Eastwood Academy, Rayleigh Road, Leigh on Sea, Essex, UK, SS9 5UU

I was appointed to reinvigorate an underachieving geography department; results were well below The Academy’s average, and the staff were unmotivated. Upon my arrival, I identified the following target groups and areas of weakness within the department: ‘Pupil Premium’, assessment, a lack of opportunities for independence in the curriculum and the quality of teaching. I raised the profile of the department across the school and within the community by running events such as assemblies, Fair Trade Fortnight, quiz nights, ‘Africa Day’ and Eco Schools within The Academy.

I developed a new curriculum, consulted with my staff and implemented the final draft in September 2013. I then provided the necessary training for existing staff, ensuring they were best equipped to teach a more contemporary and skills based curriculum. New policies on marking, AfL and differentiation were successfully adopted. We also joint planned and moderated our marking and assessments. As such, the quality of teaching (according to lesson observations and student interviews) improved from ‘satisfactory’ to ‘good with outstanding features’ in every lesson between 2013 and 2015.

To improve results at GCSE, I selected a core group of students, providing them with intervention both in and out of lessons, bolstering the Department’s residual. This work continued through 2015 with the Geography Department taking a lead in such matters, by adopting similar actions (based upon statistical analysis of progress data on each reporting cycle) for all of Key Stages 3 and 4. We developed a network of student experts to create a more sustainable solution, reducing the workload and urgency of delayed interventions in the future.

An element of the GCSE course that we were underachieving in was the controlled assessment; I targeted further measures here and, to develop a longer term solution, I rewrote the relevant scheme of work and further incorporated learning from fieldwork and projects elsewhere in the curriculum. I invested in fieldwork equipment so that such an important aspect of the curriculum could be better integrated into the work of each year group, not only more effectively addressing the requirements of the new curriculum but creating a more engaging geographical experience for learners, whilst developing skills crucial to their GCSE success. Pupils were better prepared for the task and in 2014 and 2015 and 100% of controlled assessments were completed to ‘target grade plus 1’.

I was also responsible for the planning, coordinating and delivery of all continued professional development for Heads of Department in The Academy. Additionally, I taught and supervised groups on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme as part of our student enrichment for Year 10.

2008 - 2014 Tutor and Assistant Course Director Justin Craig Education, Essex, CM13 2HG, UK

Delivering bespoke revision courses to small groups of mixed ability pupils at IGCSE, AS and A2 level. This included teaching various specifications, providing individual revision plans and developing exam technique. As the assistant course director, I supervised preparation, arrivals, staff issues, student welfare and deputised for the course director where appropriate.

2009 - 2013 Year Team Leader The Ockendon Academy, Erriff Drive, Ockendon, Essex, UK, RM15 5AY

As a Year Team Leader at The Ockendon Academy, my key responsibilities were the pastoral welfare of my students and their progress: identifying, monitoring and mentoring target groups and individuals, ensuring on-target progression across the cohort. This involved coordinating support from parents, outside agencies, the pastoral team, tutors and

teachers on individual, class and year group scales. Fundamental to this was the management of student behaviour, maintaining relationships and contact between parents, carers and professional agencies. Through ensuring a coordinated and supportive, rather than a punitive approach to this, I had great success encouraging both ownership and responsibility for individuals’ and group actions using a ‘Team Coaching’ model, which I developed with another Year Team Leader, marrying the effective use of data, friendly competition and target setting as a motivational tool.

I was responsible for managing and supporting a team of form tutors, ensuring that school policies were followed and that their forms ran effectively, monitoring and overseeing interventions within each group. I undertook a rigorous statistical analysis of attainment and progress every half termly reporting cycle, according to form group, target group, teaching group and core subjects. The results of this I then communicated with the relevant Subject Team Leaders, senior management and tutors and coordinated subsequent support and interventions.

My further duties included the planning and running of activities days, the organisation and delivery of all school assemblies, Year Council which reported to the School Council and encouraging student voice, running my ‘front of house’ duties on formal occasions and parents and educational evenings, duties, behaviour support and senior detentions.

I also taught Humanities, including Key Stage 3 and 4 Geography, Key Stage 3 Religious Studies and History, as well as Literacy Mechanics to support the weakest Year 7 groups and I was responsible for maintaining the Humanities Faculty’s online resources on the virtual learning environment (VLE).

2006 – 2009 Head of House, Head of Personal Social and Health Education Westcliff High School for Boys, Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, UK, SS0 0BP

I taught Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 Geography with exceptional success in one of the highest achieving schools in England. I ran the Eco Schools project receiving internationally recognised Bronze and Silver Awards in 2008. I also mentored a selection of the most challenging pupils in the school in order to inculcate a better work ethic, and to help develop their study skills. As Head of Harrier House. Working with my team of prefects, I organised events and ensured high levels of participation and motivation within the student body.

As Head of PSHE, I managed 17 staff, taking over an outdated position with responsibility for rewriting all policies and schemes of work. This involved challenges in the management of resources, timetabling, organising workshops and events, and developing substantial cross curricular links. In 2009 The School was chosen as a centre to exemplify good practise within the borough, recognised by Ofsted in 2007 as ‘outstanding’.

Other responsibilities included the joint maintenance of the school’s VLE (Moodle), the attendance of extracurricular events and supervising national and international field trips. I also ran the School’s ‘Charity Week’ to raise £15,000 to build a school in Tanzania and fund chemotherapy aftercare at Southend Hospital.

2005 – 2006 Teacher of Geography Chalvedon School and Sixth Form College (now The Basildon Academy), Pitsea, Essex, UK, SS13 3HL

Teaching Geography at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5. My second subject was Religious Education which was taught at Key Stage 3. I had responsibility for a Key Stage 5 form involving pastoral and academic support, and supporting students with career decisions and UCAS applications.
