Dear Harwood Community,
I hope this newsletter finds everyone in good spirits and energized as we have made it over the final hump
from winter to spring! This is always a good time of year to commit to a healthy lifestyle as we become more
active with the warmer weather and longer days. I challenge you as parents to have your kids engage in 60
minutes of active play daily; doing it as a family is a great way to spend quality time together. Put down those
tablets, turn off the gaming systems and step away from all electronic devices and enjoy the outdoors!
Upon our return from Spring Break our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students will begin taking the Michigan
Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP). Each grade level will have its own testing calendar and a
copy will be sent home for you to keep as a reminder of testing day. Please refrain from making appoint-
ments, arriving tardy or early pick-ups during the testing times. This test is online and once a child begins
the test it is important that they have the opportunity to complete it. Please support our request as our
school’s academic progress is contingent on the academic progress our students demonstrate.
This time of year parents often start thinking about their child’s placement for the next school year. The
following criteria outlines how we create our classroom lists based on information we currently have.
Academic ability
Social behavior
Leadership qualities
Gender
It is the current classroom teacher who is most familiar with your child’s learning style and individual needs.
Using this knowledge, the staff will be able to make the best recommendation for your child. Teacher re-
quests for the 2018-2019 school year must be put in writing to me stating academic reasons for the request.
If it is at all possible to honor a parent request based on academic needs I will do so. Please be advised that
class request made to your child’s current classroom teacher will not be considered an official parent request.
Please take the time to review the PTO website for end of the year activities and dates and times of the
final meetings for the school year.
Until next month….WE ARE HARWOOD…WHERE IT IS GREAT TO BE A HAWK!
Happy spring,
Mrs. Tremmel
SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED FOR SPRING BREAK
FRIDAY MARCH 30 THRU FRIDAY, APRIL 6. CLASSES
WILL RESUME ON MONDAY, APRIL 09.
SEVERE WEATHER
Tornado Watch: Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible.
Harwood’s Response: Keep weather radio on so we are posted of situation. Staff is notified so they
are prepared if situation worsens.
Tornado Warning: Tornado has actually been reported in the “watch” area.
Harwood’s Response: Shelter alarm is given. Students and all staff proceed to sheltered area.
Releasing Students: Do not come to school during a tornado warning.
Take shelter. Students are not to be released when they are taking shelter during a tornado warn-
ing. Once the warning is cancelled and everything is back to normal, a student may be released.
Also, we cannot release a student to another parent unless that parent’s name is on the emergency
card. Even though a parent is part of the car pool, we cannot release a child to him/her if his/her
name is not on the emergency card.

Harwood Elementary School is proud to announce that we were, once again, awarded with Evergreen Status,
the highest honor which is awarded to schools in Macomb County that participate in the “Green Schools” initi-
ative. Mrs. Siciliano, Ecology Club leader, was invited to participate in the awards ceremony that took place at
the Macomb Intermediate School District on Tuesday, March 27, 2018. She was presented with a certificate of
participation and achievement of the Evergreen status for the 2017/2018 school year.
“Established in 2006, the Michigan Green Schools program is open to any K-12 public or private school
in Michigan. To receive a “Green School” designation, each school must apply by submitting an appropriate
application to the county/intermediate school district in which the school is located each year. The intent of
the Michigan Green Schools Program is to encourage students to participate in activities which help them
learn about preserving natural resources, protect the environment, and promote energy efficiency and sav-
ings.”
Harwood students and staff participate in many activities throughout the school year that promote the “Green
School” initiative. All of these activities were documented in the Green School Application and highlighted
with accompanying photos. We are very proud of Harwood’s continued efforts to keeping our school
“Green! “
Harwood’s got Talent

Harwood’s PTO is sponsoring a Talent Show on Friday,

All students have to be with an adult and in order to re-
spect all participating students, who have been practic-
ing very hard, they will not be allowed to leave until the
show is over.
Thank you for your cooperation and we hope you enjoy
the show.
