ExPLORE YOuR CREaTIvE POTENTIaL aT PETERS vaLLEY SCHOOL Of CRafT

Peters Valley School of Craft is located within the picturesque Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. This setting creates a unique opportunity for immersion learning. Nestled in the midst of the beauty are state of the art studios with workshops run by professional artists from around the globe. Each studio is managed by a Department Head or Seasonal Artist Fellow, assisted by a Studio Assistant.

A typical 5-day workshop session begins on Friday at 9:00am with check-in between 8:15 and 8:45am at the office. Students may arrive the evening before if staying on campus and dinner is available for purchase in the Dining Hall. Classes continue through Tuesday, running 9am to 5pm each day. Studios are generally open at night until about 10pm (this varies by studio) for participants to continue working. Studio clean-up takes place at 3pm on the last day of the workshop.

Participants range in age from 18 to 80, beginner through advanced, from all walks of life. All studios break for meals at the same time and everyone comes together to share in their experience. Visiting other studios in the evening is encouraged and Friday night instructor presentations give everyone an incredible insight into the process and work of all of the visiting artists. Weekly auctions are held on Mondays at 1pm and all of the money raised goes to support the Studio Assistants and towards the purchase of new equipment for the studios.

As the former hamlet of Bevans, our dormitories, studios, dining hall, office and Gallery are housed in mostly historic farm houses and structures. Peters Valley is committed to being accessible to all of our students. However, the terrain at the Valley is natural and some of the historic buildings are only partially accessible. Paths and driveways are not paved. If you need special assistance, please indicate your needs with your workshop application. At least two weeks notice must be given when requesting special assistance so that we have time to accommodate your needs.

Basic Blacksmithing Jacob Brownmay 14 - 15Learn the basic techniques used to forge metal with a hammer and anvil while making a few small projects. Topics covered will include; coal forge maintenance, hammering techniques, use of tongs, anvils and vises. You don’t have to come with an idea, blue print or even drawing skills! Lyrical Forgings for SculptureZachary Noblemay 28 - 30Whether it’s free standing or hangs from a wall, let’s create some sculpture using forged elements. Traditional Tool MakingDan O’SullivanJune 3 - 5This course is the perfect next step if you have some basic blacksmithing experience. You will learn both traditional and modern techniques, to make your own tools for forging metal. These will not be museum grade presentation tools, but rough and ready shop made implements needed to make other items. Colonial Ironwork of Bethlehem, PARandy McDanielJune 10 - 13Randy McDaniel will lead a four day class on the ironwork of Bethlehem, PA. He has chosen this city due to the amount of colonial ironwork from the 1740’s still in place there and the connection with the book, Early American Wrought Iron, by Albert Sonn. There will be a brief slide show about Bethlehem and its ironwork and then we will forge a German/Moravian style shutter dog, a slide bolt, boot scraper and strap hinge while refining your skills and techniques. Forging a Viking Age Broad AxeJames AustinJune 24 - 28In this workshop we’ll forge Viking style broad axes using the original forge welding technique known as the “asymmetric wrap”. The bodies of these axes will be of mild steel and bits of high-carbon steel will be inserted for the cutting edges. This is an ancient method of tool construction which took advantage of the different properties of soft iron and hard steel, and was commonly used in the beautiful tools forged by early blacksmiths. Forging for the HomeJacob BrownJuly 1 - 3Using traditional methods of forging and joinery, participants will learn techniques necessary to produce spoons, ladles, spatulas, trivets, candleholders and fireplace tools. beginner wishing to learn how to work with steel and traditional forging techniques to make works of art. Be prepared to work with blacksmithing techniques and experiment in a medium you have no experience with. The sword, double edged in both reality and philosophy, has been a weapon of pride used to protect and conquer for thousands of years. Pattern Welded Steel for Blades & OtherwiseJames VisteJuly 29 - august 2This course will provide a general overview of pattern development history and practice from beginning through advanced. We will cover the re-purposing of materials for billets as well as processing of commonly used contemporary raw materials. Participants can plan on producing a pattern welded blade as well as material for future projects. Those interested in patterned steel for objects other than blades (i.e. jewelry, hardware etc.) are certainly welcome. Transmutations in IronLee Sauderaugust 5 - 9In this workshop we’ll attempt to change the form and nature of iron at will, and try to forget about the bar form that we typically work from. We’ll use small tabletop furnaces and hearths to recombine bits of iron into other forms. We’ll play with the sculptural opportunities of this technique, as well as the possibilities of converting iron to steel for blades and tools, according to the interests of the students. Participants will learn to forge weld small work with a hand hammer as well as welding larger pieces under the dies of a power hammer. Roots of MetalsmithingGlen GardnerSeptember 3 - 5Regardless of the choice of metal, the Art of Metalsmithing remains rooted in the techniques of forging and forming metal with a hammer. This class is designed as an introduction to these basic skill sets. The objective is to expand ones awareness of how different metals behave under a hammer. Open to all skill levels but students should be comfortable with using metal snips and moderate hammering for extended periods of time. We will be working

primarily with copper, aluminum and steel. The venue will be in the blacksmith shop to allow working with both hot and cold metal. Come raise a simple bowl and make some forming and chasing tools. Introduction to Throwing on the WheelFrancine Epsteinmay 14 - 15The potter’s wheel is an amazing tool and takes some practice to master. Participants will learn to center, bring up an even wall of clay and create basic forms such as cups, cylinders and bowls. Through teacher demonstration and hands on assistance, you will be led through the basic skills necessary to create pleasing pots. Participants with a little experience will have specific questions answered to promote personal progress. In a warm and supportive atmosphere, the group will feel free to ask questions and take some risks and have some fun with the clay. Beginner

Ceramic Forms & Surface DecorationPosey Bacopoulosmay 21 - 22This workshop will explore both ceramic forms and surfaces of functional pots. Posey will demonstrate altering pots made both on and off the wheel and decorating the surface of them. A variety of altering techniques will be shown including several oval forms such as boxes, pitchers and vases. Different approaches to handles, spouts and feet will be explored. Various decorating techniques for surfaces will be demonstrated using her majolica methods. These techniques can also be used with other firing methods and temperatures. The use of decals to further embellish surfaces will be

Making Utilitarian Pots: Exploring Questions of Function & AestheticsRobbie LobellJune 10 - 14Making pots is both personal and universal and asks us, as makers, to consider decisions based on function and aesthetics. This workshop gives participants five full days to explore a variety of wheel-formed functional pots. Altering from the round, handles that work, lids that fit, feet that lift, pots that serve at the table, and more will be demonstrated and explored according to each student’s level of interest. Conversation about the function and aesthetics of utilitarian pots of all types will be ongoing. This workshop is about the process of making and stretching our ideas for functional pots. DIY Ceramic 3D Printers: Build & CollaborateBryan CzibeszJune 24 - 28Learn a practical understanding of the construction and use of an extrusion-based ceramic 3d printer that can be integrated into existing ceramic studio practices. Participants will begin by building their own DIY ceramic 3D printer (which they will take home with them) from parts and an open-source knowledge base. Then, we will develop digital design strategies--from simple to complex--that allow us to return to working directly with clay, combining 3D printed parts with thrown, hand built, and/or cast additions. By building our own machines and developing hybrid methodologies that facilitate direct play between digital and hand processes, this work-shop will provide tools for artists and educators to integrate digital technologies into their studio practice and ceramics curricula. Each participant is required to bring a laptop computer (any platform) and have an intermediate understanding of digital software, but digital 3D modeling experience is not required. Tea Bowls: Form, Function & BeautyKristin MullerJuly 1 - 3Explore the processes and aesthetics of making winter and summer tea bowls for Tea Ceremony. Topics covered will include: aesthetics, preparing clay bodies, nuances and components of summer and winter shaped tea bowls, forming

methods on the potter’s wheel to make tea bowl blanks for carving and throwing of the mound to achieve fluidity. There will be an emphasis on the architecture of tea bowls and the art of trimming tea bowl feet featuring eastern trimming methods and tools to compose harmonious and balanced tea bowls. Decoration and firing techniques will be discussed but the focus of the three day intensive will be on making tea bowls that are personally expressive and functional for whisking and drinking matcha (powdered green tea). Throwing into HandbuildingErica WurtzJuly 8 - 12Throw, shape, cut, curve, twist, attach, and build. In this workshop you will learn how the potter’s wheel can be used as a handbuilding tool. Erica will demonstrate her ‘assemblage’ approach to construction, manipulating wheel thrown elements in combination with traditional handbuilding techniques to form sculptural vessels such as cups, vases, bowls and teapots. Using these unconventional building methods, and discovering some of their own, participants will explore new surfaces, forms, volumes, and designs. design and function. They also have to work on an aesthetic level and provide a wonderful vehicle for creative expression. The skills learned from making “teapots that work” can be applied to all forms of functional ceramic-making. In this hands-on workshop, where participants will need basic throwing skills, we will study the design and making of teapots in detail. Chris will share a variety of wheel-throwing and altering techniques and his unique approach to handle- and tool-making developed during his 35 years as a studio potter in New Zealand. The Big BurnBruce Dehnert & Steve CookJuly 29 - august 2Come join in this annual firing bonanza with two instructors, two assistants and heaps of fun. This gathering of pyromaniacs offers anyone of any level the opportunity to work with your own glazes and clay bodies while putting your ideas to the test. You bring the

Reduction Cool Wood and Gas FiringTed Nealaugust 12 - 16This workshop will include making and firing work for both a reduction cool wood and gas firing. Due to time constraints, bisqued work should also be brought by participants and should be made of clay that can withstand the rigors of cone 10 atmospheric firing. The process of reduction cooling utilizes the natural ash glaze process common to most wood firing, but also promotes the dark metallic surfaces by a controlled reduction of oxides (primarily iron) in the cooling cycle. We will load, fire the fast fire wood and reduction gas kilns and make new work during the workshop. Experience with wood firing is helpful. advanced Beginner to Intermediate

Mr. Otani, who is from Shigaraki, Japan, first led a firing of this kiln over a decade ago. Potters of all abilities are welcome to bring work and to participate fully in the firing. Shiro will share with the group many observations that he has garnered from a lifetime of firing wood kilns in many different locales around the world including several here in the United States. In this workshop, participants will learn safe procedures for cutting green wood on the bandsaw in preparation for turning it on the lathe. 3 Ways to Cut DovetailsMatt KenneyJune 24 - 28Dovetails are strong and beautiful, making them a great joint for casework like wall cabinets and drawers. It’s not easy to cut a set of clean, tight dovetails, when you’re first getting started. Before you pick up any cutting tools you’ll learn the importance of accurate layout. The first technique takes advantage of the tablesaw’s precision and accuracy to cut the tails, and then a router for the pins. Then we’ll cut some tails at the bandsaw, and use a second router technique for the pins. Finally, we’ll get to the crowning glory of woodworking: the handcut dovetail joint using a backsaw, a coping saw, and a few sharp chisels. You will gain a great understanding of how the joint works, and a solid foundation to cut dovetails on your own. Hand Tools at the Work BenchDaniel Lawrencemay 28 - 29Learn basic wood working skills while making a wooden box with a rabbeted top (to unite the edges of in a rabbet joint) using hand tools at the workbench. You will have the opportunity to design and make a handle unique to the box which will be an introduction to the use of the bandsaw and scroll saw. The techniques covered will include: measuring and marking with shop rule, square, marking gauge, using a bevel, using a bench hook and clamps, and using the backsaw and coping saw to cut parts. The twinning of artist and community is an especially significant feature of folk art, suggesting an abiding intimacy between making, using, and sharing. Folk artists follow that rather than indulge a personal aesthetic as a first priority. Folk artists mindfully incorporate recognizable materials, processes, and practices that situate their work within the public sphere they occupy with other community members. But there is also a persistent element of innovation and

change in folk art, which allows for personal expression, leading to variation over space as well as time as in the case of decoy carving, hand quilting, and blacksmithing. This exciting series of Folk Arts Workshops will introduce students to these art forms and give them a wonderful window into preservation and innovation of these crafts.

TaKINg WORKSHOPS aT PETERS vaLLEY

On-Campus Lodging Lodging for workshop students is available on the Peters Valley campus in our rustic farmhouses. The accommodations are basic and “no frills”. Rooms have two twin beds, share a bathroom and are not air conditioned. The fee is $45 per night. There are a very limited number of single rooms, rooms that do have air conditioning, and two rooms that have a private bath. Additional fees are charged and reservations are made on a first-come, first-serve basis by calling the office.

meals Freshly prepared meals are served in the Peters Valley Dining Hall during workshop sessions. Lunches are included in the tuition cost for the workshop for all students. Break-fast & dinner can be purchased separately as a meal plan or pay as you go at the dining hall. Dinner is available the evening before the workshop begins for an additional cost of $15 and may be paid at the door. Dinner is not served on the last day of the workshop. Please see our website for pricing information. Students are encouraged to bring along snacks to enjoy when the dining hall is closed. Located in the Delaware Water Gap

Peters Valley ENRICHES LIvES through the learning, practice, and appreciation of fine crafts.

The making of fine crafts is a kind of ExPLORaTION, which relies on an integration of heart, head, and hands. Peters Valley encourages and facilitates this exploration in everything we do.

We are a vibrant community, bringing together established and emerging artists from around the globe. COmINg TOgETHER to make things makes us better artists, able to learn from each other, and to evaluate our own efforts in a wider context.

We provide studio-based educational workshops for life-long learners who have the opportunity to benefit from working with nationally and internationally RECOgNIZEd aRTISTS.

We are stewards of the CREaTIvE PROCESS: from preparation, to incubation, to illumination, to verification. We strive to develop the creative abilities of all of our participants through this focus on process.

We provide an inspiring natural setting, intensive instruction, the right tools, and a supportive environment to immerse oneself in making things by hand. Fresh air and respite from one’s normal routine can bring fRESH INSIgHTS, and for some, perhaps, opportunities for peak moments, magic, and transformation.

Our gallery shows, craft fairs, annual auctions, presentations at various festivals, community outreach efforts, and other programs allow us to both bring fine crafts to a wider audience, and to help SHaPE fuTuRE STaNdaRdS of excellence in fine crafts.

We honor the tradition of crafts by continuing to experiment with new techniques and materials, in pursuit of artistic, professional, and personal gROWTH. This is our focus and joy.
