FALL 2016

HEA Foundation is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization committed to preserving and restoring sight with comprehensive eye care surgeries, medications, and ancillary services for individuals in financial hardship; and supporting education and research initiatives for the benefit of the community.

I’ve always had poor vision – I remember crying in nursery school, the teacher discovering that I couldn’t step down because I couldn’t see where to step. I was wearing glasses before I was four years old – so terribly near-sighted, also so much astigmatism. I loved to run as a child, but occasionally tripped and fell, leading to quite a few trips to the hospital with concussions. I grew accustomed to my poor vision, even preparing myself for eventual blindness. My favorite book as a child was ‘Follow My Leader’ by Garfield, about a boy who became blind.

A few years ago, my optometrist told me that I had cataracts, but that they were not yet a problem – at a recent check-up, he answered my complaints with the news that my cataracts

had ‘matured.’ Knowing that I was a minister, with no medical insurance and meager income, he directed me towards the next miracle in my life – the Houston Eye Associates Foundation.

I spoke to Jessica Tegethoff at the Houston Eye Associ-ates Foundation,

and the process began. I was approved for assistance, and directed to one of the dedicated doctors who chose to donate their time and skills to the Foundation.

I had appointments with Dr. Zuckerbrod, and he and his staff were indeed wonderful. When Dr. Zuckerbrod discovered that one of my eyes had extreme astigmatism,

he requested that the Houston Eye Associates Foundation approve a special lens, and it was approved by the committee. I was given written information about the process, plus every step was carefully explained to me. Necessary eye drops, mostly to prevent infection, were provided for before and after each surgery. The days of surgery went smoothly, and the staff of nurses were most accommodating.

I am now recovering, and adapting to my new eyes. I actually see more clearly than perhaps I ever have in my life. I am pleased with the whole process. Dr. Zuckerbrod was warm, caring and wonderful. I thank Dr. Zuckerbrod and his staff for contributing to my vision miracles, and most importantly, I thank the Houston Eye Associates Foundation for making the Blessing of improved, clear vision possible and available to me and others.

Thank you for the opportunity to tell my story of vision miracles, and to celebrate the generosity of the Doctors, staff and Board of the Houston Eye Associates Foundation.

The HEA Foundation was created to help those in financial hardship and who have nowhere else to turn for their medical eye care needs. HEA physicians and other partnering medical professionals donate their office time and surgical/specialty services, while the HEA Foundation pays for the surgical facility fees, vision-saving medications, and ancillary services. To learn more about HEA Foundation’s medical and surgical eye care services, please call Jessica Tegethoff at (713) 558-8740.

Dear Visionaries,

Thirty-five years ago, the physicians of Houston Eye Associates noticed there was a gap in our health system that created a barrier for individuals needing help with their vision. They realized there was an entire population in our community who did not have the resources available to preserve and restore their sight. With the belief that patients benefit from complete medical and surgical eye care services despite their economic status, the Houston Eye Associates (HEA) Foundation was formed.

Today, the HEA Foundation remains true to these original core beliefs with its mission of being committed to preserving and restoring sight with comprehensive eye care surgeries, medications, and ancillary services for individuals in financial hardship; and supporting education and research initiatives for the benefit of the community.

We are unique as the HEA Foundation is the only 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization in Texas that provides complete medical and surgical eye care services at no cost to qualified individuals. Services are made possible due to the generosity of our philanthropic supporters. HEA Foundation does not request or receive government or third-party agency funding. The Foundation is supported solely by charitable donations from grateful individuals, private foundations and corporations, and annual fundraising events. These funds help pay for surgical facility fees, sight-saving medications, corneal tissue, glasses, prosthetics, and any additional ancillary services needed.

Generously donated office and surgical time by my colleagues at Houston Eye Associates and our partnering medical professionals are an invaluable and essential component of the care provided. These donated services, paired with the philanthropic support from those who believe in our mission, make it possible for our organization to continue helping those in financial hardship.

Your support, whether through advocacy, volunteerism, or financial support, helps the HEA Foundation continue to grow, allowing our organization to serve more adults and children every year. On behalf of the HEA Foundation, its Board of Directors, and the patients we serve, thank you for being a part of our mission.

Sightfully yours,

Samih Elchahal, M.D.

MEDICALCORNER

Cataracts are a clouding of the lens in your eye. Cataracts are extremely common in older people and can occur in either or both eyes. While cataracts usually develop slowly, over time, one’s vision can become affected greatly. SymptomsSymptoms include: • Blurry vision• Colors that seem faded• Not being able to see well at night• Double vision• Frequent prescription changes in your eyewear CausesAging is the most common cause of cataracts. Other causes include congenital cataracts, secondary cataracts as a result of other medical conditions, like diabetes, or traumatic cata-racts as a result of an injury to the eye. Other risk factors that increase your chance of developing cataracts include cigarette smoking, air pollution, and heavy drinking.

TreatmentEye surgery is the only way to fully remove a cataract. Because the development of cataracts is usually slow, new glasses or magnifying lenses may be recommended to start. Once the cataract begins affecting your quality of life, surgery is then recommended. During surgery, the surgeon removes your lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens implant. The surgery is an outpatient procedure and is the most frequently performed surgery in the U.S. After cataract surgery, more than 90% of people have better vision. In 2015, cataracts accounted for 48% of the patients served by the HEA Foundation. Referenceshttps://medlineplus.gov/cataract.htmlhttp://www.webmd.com/eye-health/cataracts/default.htm
