LeTTer from THe PrinciPaLThe 2016-17 school year was a great year for us. As I review the year, I have seen so many wonderful accomplishments from both students and staff. Our students have received recognition for achievement in the areas of academics, athletics and citizenship. Many more are receiving Jacket Way recognition. I attribute these accomplishments to our responsible students, supportive community and dedicated faculty and staff.

We wish our eighth grade students well as they move on to Perrysburg High School. They have bright futures ahead of them, and we appreciate all of their hard work as students at Perrysburg Junior High School. We know that they have the skills and habits that they need in order to be successful at the next level.

We are already looking forward to the 2017-2018 school year. We return the vast majority of our students to the building. This is a first for this building as we will not be accepting an entire grade level. Having this continuity this year will allow us to slide into next year and do some really great things. While there will be adjustments to the look of the day, our students will not need to adjust to a building entirely new to them. Great things are certainly in store for us.

Thank you for all of your support this year. We look forward to your continued involvement in your child’s education. Have a restful, enjoyable and safe summer!

nUrSe’S noTaBLeSParent Immunization Reminder for incoming 7th Grade StudentsMandatory Immunizations for incoming 7th grade students for the start of the 2017-2018 school year include both a Tdap booster and Meningococcal vaccine (for serogroups A,C,W and Y). These are state mandated immunizations. Students not receiving these immunizations prior to the start of the school year risk being excluded from school until documentation is provided. Documentation that the student has received the immunizations can be mailed to the Junior High School, emailed to: [email protected] or faxed to 419-872-8812, Attn: Nurse.

Medication in SchoolThe Perrysburg Schools medication policy requires that a new medication form be filled out for each school year for medication that MUST be given during the school day. If your child requires medication during the school day, a Perrysburg Schools Medication Approval Form needs to be completed. These forms can be found on the Perrysburg Schools district website under, “Student Health Services”. These forms can then be mailed, faxed, or dropped off at the school after August 7, 2017. Please label: Attention Nurse. Please note: only a parent or adult may bring medications, in original bottle, to the school building. No students are to bring medications to school. Self-administer “as needed” medication, except for asthma inhalers and acute allergy medications, are to be stored in the school clinic. Please note, that if a student will be self-carrying a dose of epinephrine for allergic reactions, state law requires that we have a back-up dose in the school clinic as well.

SUmmer LiBrary media newSeBooksThe school library may be closed but our eBooks will still be available over the summer. Junior high students can access eBooks through go.follett.com by using their library username and password. If your student has lost this information, they can contact Laura Franck at [email protected] or message her on Schoology.

Supplies neededCleaning out your craft closet? We are expanding our Makerspace at the junior high library and are looking for unused or gently used craft items. Items might include scrapbook paper, cardstock, scissors, craft sticks, yarn, knitting needles, crochet hooks, coloring pencils, markers, glue, googly eyes, gewgaws, pipe cleaners, etc. Anything that our students can use to make something.

JHPo: ParenTS and famiLieS HeLPing kidS!

JHPO is happy to announce we will be selling new Luggage Tags and Vinyl Clings at the computer hand out in August and at the school orientations. These are for all students in the school district. A great way to identify your items whether it be your computer, computer bag, sports bags, instrument case or your book bag! Look for pictures of these items on the JHPO website (under the Perrysburg Junior High tab) soon!

JHPO wants to thank all the parents and families that helped out with our various events throughout the year. We couldn’t be as successful or give so much back to the school without your help and support throughout the year. We look forward to a great new year in August. Look for our new membership form that will be online in the registration packs and on the JHPO website under the Perrysburg Junior High tab. See you in August!

Service Before SeLfYouth to Youth is finishing off the year with service in mind. The club recently visited Heartland of Perrysburg and helped make bird feeders with the residents. They also participated in a sing-a-long to some great oldies. Fun was had by all as they created some anti-drug commercials to be aired on WPJH, our school’s television program. The last meeting of the year is upon them as they will be celebrating all of the hard work, fun, and dedication from their members.

Chess club is now finishing it’s Spring Season. It has been an overwhelming success. Over the course of the past school year, there has been over 65 PJH students that came to learn or play the game of chess! While it is sad that the season is ending, all are looking forward to the next school year! Chess club will pick back up in Septem-ber/October (TBD). Next year, the club is going to try to have some students compete against students from other schools! More info on this toward the beginning of the school year. Thank you, and keep on playing!

7th Grade Students Attend H.I.P.P. Leadership CampPerrysburg Junior High School recently had a select group of seventh grade students, nominated by their teachers, attend H.I.P.P camp. This High Impact Peer Program is a two day camp designed to develop leadership and self-confidence to a cross section of student leaders or potential leaders. Along with developing leadership skills, a strong emphasis was placed on anti-bullying awareness and prevention. Students were asked to sign a contract, agreeing to participate in all camp events and be willing to be pushed out of their comfort zone. Miss Derr, H.I.P.P. Advisor, states, “For some, this was not an easy task, but to see them accomplish the high ropes, the wall, the Pamper Pole, and discuss activities was simply amazing. Overcoming their fears and instilling more self confidence, will in turn help them become better leaders.” During a planning session, the students took time to learn what they could do upon returning to PJH. When asked to describe something they learned about themselves at camp, Lindsey Lazor shared, “I learned that I really can do what I put my mind to. If I have positive thoughts and encouragement, I can do anything.” Joey Bohman shared, “I learned that I can step out of my comfort zone and take safe risks.” The H.I.P.P. students have taken on the slogan, “Lead Today...Bring About Change.” If you would like to help support the H.I.P.P. program through a donation, please visit www.perrysburgschoolsfoundation.org (you can designate your donation to go to H.I.P.P.).

Miss Kile’s 7th grade students have been researching Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy for an informative research project. They were presented with the amazing opportunity to have guest speaker, Crystal Gerhardt, come to Perrysburg Junior High to share her personal experience. Her son, Jackson McNutt, is battling this disease and currently a second grader at Fort Meigs Elementary. Her students learned a great deal about this disease and took a pledge to stand up against bullying and work on being more empathetic towards others.

STUdenT coUnciLPJH Student Council finished up a great school year with a pizza party during the first week of May. The students have been busy the past several months manning the school store every Wednesday, painting fish for the Walleye Festival in downtown Perrysburg, planning spirit days, celebrating teacher appreciation week with a pizza lunch, and participating in the Spring spirit assembly. We are already looking forward to many projects and activities next school year!

Student Council’s three little free pantries will be installed in late spring. Students from all of the 8th grade art classes have helped repaint a bench in the courtyard and student council purchased some potted plants that they installed.

i find THe defendanT…..The PJH Mock Trial Team capped off a very successful season on March 30th at the Ohio Supreme Court Building in Columbus. They were there for the State Showcase for mock trial teams from all around the state. They had practiced for three months to prepare for the competition. The case was British Crown v. Johnny Tremain, based on the novel Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. Both teams were very successful and achieved the highest overall rating of “Superior.” Three students were awarded individual awards; they included Hanan Sjah and Kathryn Osten for best witness and Peter LeMay for best attorney.

Martin Lowenberg, Holocaust survivor, shared his personal story with over 400 eighth grade students from Perrysburg Junior High on Wednesday, March 22, as part of their study of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust in their English Language Arts class. Mr. Lowenberg is a survivor of Kaiserwald, Libau, Hamburg Fuhlsbuettel and Kiel work camps and was liberated in May, 1945 at the age of 17. This was Mr. Lowenberg’s third year in a row visiting and speaking to the eighth grade students. In the evening, Mr. Lowenberg also gave a presentation that was open to the community at the Commodore. Both events were sponsored by the Perrysburg Schools Foundation.

Mr. Lowenburg pictured with PJH 8th grade Language Arts Dept. Teachers who helped to bring him to the junior high along with the PSF.

The PJH Bands finished an accomplished 2016 – 2017 school year by performing in many different local and regional events. Our 6th Grade Band kicked off our Spring with a wonderful Spring Concert featuring a rousing rendition of the Overture to 1812 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The PJH Jazz Band, 7th Grade Band, and 8th Grade Band sprung into action with their performance the following week, featuring some of the most difficult music we have ever performed!

On Friday, May 5th many of our bandlings in the 7th Grade Band and 8th Grade Band traveled to Anthony Wayne High School to compete in the Ohio Music Education Association Junior High Large Group Adjudicated Event. The 7th Grade Band and 8th Grade Band both gave strong performances. The 8th Grade Band received an Excellent rating, and the 7th Grade Band was one of only three ensembles in our region to receive a Superior rating!

The 4th annual PJH Band on the Run 5K boasted a record number of over 270 runners, and we have been informed that the event has become the largest 5K in Perrysburg! Over forty different PJH Band parent volunteers helped plan, organize, and oversee

the event. Each year students from the PJH Bands form small pep bands along the route to play and cheer the runners on to victory. The weather eased up just enough to have a great event on Saturday, May 6th. The sun always shines on the PJH Bands!

The 8th Grade Band had their farewell performance as a class at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio on Friday, May 12th. The students in the 8th Grade Band formed the PJH Marching Yellow Jackets to march around Cedar Point, and then enjoyed the rest of the day at the park. Our students performed for a diverse crowd who may otherwise never get to experience the spirit and excellence of the PJH Bands. Congratulations to the 8th Grade Band on three wonderful years at PJH!

To end our 2016 – 2017 school year, the PJH Marching Yellow Jackets will be performing in the Perrysburg Memorial Day parade. All of our classes are rehearsing “America, the Beautiful” as they eagerly learn their marching drills and maneuvers. The PJH Marching Yellow Jackets will consist of every member of our 6th Grade Band, 7th Grade Band, and 8th Grade Band. Our bandlings are excited to end our school year with a great community performance for a very special occasion.

arT newSPrizm Creative Community is sponsoring our 2nd Annual PJH Art Exhibition at Way Public Library from May 1-June 30. Over 50 PJH students will have their artwork on display at the exhibit. The

artwork will be in the library basement and can be viewed during open hours.
