The Holy Rosary: Seeing Jesus Through the Heart of Mary
Some people say that they find it boring to pray the Rosary. That may be because they are only praying the Rosary on the simplest level they have learned, just thinking about the Our Fathers and Hail Marys. Those are very beautiful prayers and full of great meaning for us. But if we just pray the Rosary on that level, it is not very challenging for us. There is a different, much deeper way to pray the Rosary, which takes more effort, but which can be very rewarding. Why do many restaurants play background music? It is NOT to prevent a conversation with the person you are with! The background music is actually to help you to talk with the person you are with, by covering over the conversations of other people and other distractions. Similarly, a deeper level of praying the Rosary is letting the Our Fathers and Hail Marys become like background music to cover over the distractions in our mind while we meditate (think deeply) about the meaning of the mysteries of the Rosary and how they apply to our lives.
Here is an example of meditating on the first Mystery of the Rosary, the first Joyful Mystery, when the angel Gabriel announced to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:26-33). Mary’s answer to the angel shows that she had no intention of ever becoming a mother. That was not her plan for her life. But when she realized God had a different plan for her, she humbly abandoned her plan in order to follow God’s plan. That is why Mary told the angel, “I am the hand-maid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said.” As we pray the Our Father and Hail Marys of this decade, we can try to think more deeply about this mystery by applying it to ourselves. For example, many of us have made great plans for the future: our plans for study, for a job, for where we want to live, etc. But what if God sent an angel to tell you, “I have a very different plan for your life.” What if God sent an angel to tell you that he wants you to dedicate time every week to feeding the hungry? What if God told you He wanted you to spend some time every weekend visiting the sick? What if God told you that He wanted you to serve Him as a priest or a deacon or a religious sister? Would you be willing to change your plans in order to follow God’s plan? Of course it is not common for God to send angels to tell us He has a different plan for our lives. But God has a way of showing us He has a different plan for us. If your plan is to become a professional basketball player, but you are unable to develop the skills you need to do so, you can see this as God telling you He has a different plan for your life. If you try your best to work for a company you really like, but you are not hired by them, you can see this as God telling you He has a different plan for your life. And the Blessed Virgin Mary would tell us not to insist on our own plan, but to follow God’s plan. She would tell us that if we follow God’s plan for our lives, that is how we will be happiest. And as you think deeply about these things, the Our Father and the ten Hail Marys you are saying will help you to focus on your meditation. Before you know it, you will be finished with that mystery and it will be time to think about the next one! The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, which St. Pope John Paul II said was his favorite prayer. He said that when we carefully think about the mysteries of the Rosary, trying to understand their meaning and how they apply to our own lives, then we come to understand Jesus better through the heart of Mary. And nobody can better teach us to understand and imitate Jesus than His Blessed Mother! Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, pray for us!
