Okay, just to clarify, if you havent seenZoolander youll miss the point of the abovepicture. Google is your friend on this one.Anyway, I digress, Happy New Year to everyoneon planet PF. Im sure, like me, youll think thatthe break seems like a lifetime ago. Before youknow it, the show season will have kicked oand well all be complaining about the weather.

Were starting the new year with an issuecrammed full of Fords of varying shapes andsizes. With a few of them belonging to oneman. No, were not talking about my cars, weretalking about a collection of cars that allactually work. Frank Frostik has got a Ford forevery occasion and weve been lucky enough tohave a nose at a few of them. Weve got acheeky Anglia 105e which, granted, isnt yourusual PF fodder, but it was the originalperformance Ford along with the Cortina and, back in the day, if you had one with a Lotusengine like this one has, youd have been the

envy of everyone. Not to mention the fastest carfor several counties. A claim not far o that madeby the owner of the supercharged Fiesta ST.There are big claims and even bigger plans.

The most exciting thing to happen beforeChristmas has got to be the news that there willbe a new Focus RS coming to the market in2016. Turn forwards a couple of pages and wevethrown about a few ideas of what it might endup like. How accurate we are, remains to be seen.As soon as we find out more, well let you know. Will it be as popular as those that came before it?If the current Focus ST is anything to go by -maybe not.

With all of the above and more to boot, thereis plenty to get stuck into inside this issue ofPerformance Ford. Weve even had an argumentwith ourselves on whether the ST220 Mondeowill ever be a classic car. Enjoy.

    RS Goes Global

    PF 007

It has also said the car will beavailable globally for the firsttime, further pushing the brandimage of Fords performancevehicles. The company has alsosaid it will be bringing out twelvenew performance vehicles before

Track Attack We might still be stued with brandy and mince pies, but thathasnt stopped us from working out when we can get you guysout on track at Brands Hatch.

Weve opted for a track eveningon July 15th and a full day oftrack action on November 2nd,so youve got plenty of time toget your car sorted and make

sure its running at its best. Wellkeep you updated with moreinformation as and when we getcloser. But, until then, just makesure you keep those dates free!

Ford has confirmed its going to make another Focus RS and we have gotten allexcited about that in a couple of pages time.

2020, all under the banner of Fordssoon-to-be united performancearm, Ford Performance. This willbring all the global teams together, allowing them to share ideas andtechnologies in a bid to producethose twelve new cars. The Ford

Performance team will come fromthe unison of Ford Racing, Ford SVTand Team RS.

The Focus is the only confirmedcar, but with a dozen more to go,we cant help but wonder whattheyll be. The Fiesta RS is

something wed like to see, butwhat about a Mondeo RS or evena Ka RS? Who knows? As soon aswe know more, youll see it onthese pages!

Time Attack 2015Want to put your car through its paces in a new and exciting form ofmotorsport, or do you just want to spectate at one of these thrilling events?

If so, 2015 is the year for you, thanks to the Classic and RetroTime Attack Championship, whichwill be running alongside the MSATime Attack Championship oversix rounds.

With a fairly open policy when itcomes to the cars that can enter, itreally is open to anyone. Its allabout getting quick laps in and, from there, you progress up thescoreboard, providing you keep

putting in good times, of course.Crucially though, its a fun, excitingand enjoyable form of motorsportthat will put plenty of old tinthrough its paces. And lets face it,theres nothing better than an old, fast Ford being given some stickon the track. If it sounds likesomething youd like to be a partof, just head over towww.classictimeattack.co.uk formore information.

Up On The RoofMimicking the same publicity stunt pulled o in the 1960s whenthe original Mustang was launched, Ford has once again lookedskyward in a bid to put out its message.

And, again, it involves a Mustang. But, unlike the original stunt, itdoesnt involve the Empire State Building. Nope, this time its the worldstallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The car was hoisted to the122nd floor of the iconic building as part of an event to celebrate Fordsinvolvement with Dubai and Middle Eastern markets, with ExecutiveChairman Bill Ford making an appearance to ax the pony emblem tothe front of the car. Today we planted the Ford flag in the Middle East &Africa, an exciting, vibrant region that represents the final frontier forgrowth in the auto industry, he said. We also sent a message to theworld that Mustang is going global after 50 years as Americas greatestmotoring icon. The Mustang will hit UK soil later in 2015.

Pot LuckDecember saw the Government confirm another 6 billion investmenttowards fixing the UKs roads.

This means that, if all goes to plan, the total spend between 2010 and2012 will be nudging 10 billion. The idea is that the UK will havenot only the roads it needs, butalso roads it deserves as we movefurther into the 21st century.

However, all the moneywont go directly filling in the gaps,

as it were. It will be dished out tolocal authorities who will be ableto use the money to also fix streetfurniture, lighting and signs.Hopefully though, if the money isspent right, it could soon be theend of smashed undercarriagesand bent alloys. At least, thatsthe dream!

Apparently its the mostadvanced and innovative MOMO steeringwheel produced to date, whatever thatmeans. We just think it looks nice. In fact, itdfit right in on the dash of a late-model Fiestaor Focus. Though its lines may not work toowell in an older Ford, so Mk1 Fiestas neednot apply. • WHATSNEW

    PF 010

In December 2014, Ford finallydropped the bombshell that wedall been waiting for; revealing thatthere is a new Focus RS in thepipeline. However, they werententirely forthcoming with anyreally juicy details. One thing thatwe do know for sure though, isthat with the RS badge comesgreat responsibility.

There are manufacturers out therethat have slapped an RS badge onthe boot of a hotted-up modelpurely because it makes it soundmore racy. However, when youcombine the letters R and S with aFord badge, you are tapping in toyears of heritage, years of veryspecial cars. All of which havebecome cult classics in their ownright, and all of them spawning afollowing like no other. But, giventhe mild reception that thecurrent ST has received here inthe UK, what are Ford going to doto elevate this Focus onto an ivorytower all of its own?

There are a few things that wedo already know about the RS,some of which are music to ourears. Others, though, potentiallyindicate that this generationmay fall short of the standardsset by its older siblings. The firstof which is that this is a worldcar. That means that it will besold worldwide. Which in turnmeans that compromises will haveto be made to pass regulations inother countries. Yes, there is achance that Ford will tweak thecars for each specific market, butthey won't be significant tweaksas this will cost too much money. We also know that it will be a five-door, owing to the fact that athree-door Focus doesnt exist anymore. Whilst the absence of athree-door model from the line-upwont bother most people, it willbother some.

The engine, we know, will bethe 2.3 EcoBoost similar to thatused in the 2015 Mustang. Poweris expected to maybe touch350bhp with similar, if not greater, torque figures. Which will beplenty fast. However, there is anunderlying feeling of concernexpressed by the tuning world. The current ST has a cylinderhead that doesnt lend itself totuning. Hence this is why wearent seeing, or are ever likely tosee, massive power Mk3 STs. If theRS uses a similar cylinder headdesign, which it probably will though maybe with two portsrather than just one the scopefor tuning will be far less than the

previous generation of Focus RS,and any other RS for that matter.Tuning is a big part of what thesecars are, its a big part of theirfollowing. So, lets hope that thesefears arent realised.

It was reported that the RSwould remain front-wheel drive. However, it has since beensuggested that it will actually beall-wheel drive, with an entirelynew drivetrain developed for therear end, and an intelligent meansof splitting the power front torear. Theres even talk of you beingable to choose how much poweris sent to which end of the car.Which, rather than tame the fun, could potentially deliver a whole

    Focus RS for 2016

new driving experience. We willhave to wait and see, but the earlyindications are good.

Visually, its unlikely that the RSwill be as much of a steroid-enhanced version of itscounterpart as it has previouslybeen. The five-door shell meansthat wider rear arches would notonly require new quarter panels, but new doors too. That meansexpense, and expense makes itunlikely to happen. Nevertheless, ithas to be aggressive, so expectnew bumpers, vents in the bonnet, skirts and splitters et-al. As an RS ithas to stand out from the rest, justlike previous generations have, and we are sure it will.

The first generation Focus RS wasa loss-leader for Ford. It was aninstant cult hit, great fun to driveand not particularly liked by JeremyClarkson. The second RS was amass-produced vehicle, albeit anevolution of the ST that preceded it.Both were, in our opinion, built toplease motoring journalists. Verycapable chassis, but perhaps a bitless engaging, a bit less-raw thanthe first iteration. Where does thisleave the Mk3? Well its bound todeliver oodles of grip, have aresponsive chassis and, of course, agallon of lift-o oversteer to keepMr Clarkson happy. Whichever wayyou look at it, we cant wait to getbehind the wheel.

Scalextric launched an innovative techy set at Christmas, called ARC One. The set enables you to run races via your tablet or iPad. Download the Scalextric APP, connect your device wirelessly to the start straight powerbase via Bluetooth, and press start. You can now run your races recording timed laps, top speeds, start reaction times, and adding variables such as fuel load and tyre wear into strategic races where fuel stops are needed to stop you being disqualified from finishing.

The software download looks cool, and even an oldie like me was soon able to navigate myself around the intuitive menus at speed, and I couldnt help sitting for ages, pushing the limits of my cars grip, together with the limits of my driving, trying to improve my lap times! Once you have finished, you can use the app to share your experience and results across the web through Facebook or Twitter, with your friends and fellow competitors. And, you can customise your system and races to suit you and the track you own, and show off all your cars too, if you really want!

The set comes with two Scalextric generic Lightning sports cars which, as well as being strong, are very fast and easy to drive, with magnetic-induced grip, and superb handling

Everyone needs something to do when they arent playing with their real cars, so were taking a look at some of the best ways to spend time away from your Ford.

SCALEXTRIC ARC TESTED WITH LIMITED EDITION STOBART ESCORTS SET

helped by a very low centre of gravity. For our Performance Ford 'track test', we chose

to use the superb Eddie Stobart Mk1 and Escort Limited Edition set to show off our sideways skills, being the top Scalextric rally drivers that we are! As the ARC system is also designed to be used with any analogue Scalextric car, we also employed two older models to race up against, comparing modern against vintage Scalextric. To do this we wheeled out an original MK1 Escort RS 1600 from 1978 and, to bridge the age gap, a superb Focus RS WRC in Works livery. We added a bit of extra track for a bit more speed, and sat down for a few hours to race and indulge against the new ARC clock and system. The 78 Old Skool Escort was a real handful, albeit very powerful. Whilst having to be super-cautious into the corners, we still were able to back this car into a bend, and power-slide out. It was great fun to drive once you found its limit, and even without the extra speed and grip of a modern car, you still came away grinning with enjoyment. The Focus, and the Stobart Escorts were very similar in feel, with super grip from the magnets (fitted to the chassis as standard). That said, the Focus actually braked better into the corners, but was slightly more sideways off the bends. Both Stobart Escorts look and handle fantastically, with the additional sparkle from head and tail lights helping you appreciate the extra detailing that these Limited Edition models provide.

Our test placed the 'Old Skool' 1600 RS Escort in fourth, with a sideways tripped time of 6.077 secs. A much faster third spot went to the Stobart Mk1 Escort, stopping the clock at 3.650 secs. Second place went to the Stobart MK 2 Escort shaving off just over a tenth off the Mk 1 with a time of 3.530 secs. The winner, as it should be in real terms, was the Latvala Focus RS, just winning through with a time of 3.37 secs.

This ARC One set is a great way to get into Scalextric or, indeed, something any hardened Scalextric fan can extend their system with. We liked the fact that the playability was great. Plus, for any very young racer, the hand throttles can be set to a less powerful range, enabling them to get in on the action too.

So, it's all-round great fun and, with further options coming on this app, it will be interesting to see where Scalextric take this new formula of Bluetooth race technology. Cant wait for the next development. Bring it on. PF

  • things I particularly wanted to do. Onewas to make sure it had the originalhub caps and the other was to keep thestandard exhaust on show!

The devilish plan to build the carcame about after buying the enginefirst of all, which came from a BMW 3series of all things. A friend had it fittedin a Cosworth powered E36 that hebuilt ages ago, recalls Frank. I knew itwas a strong engine so I said if he everwanted to sell it Id buy it.

Sure enough when the time came tobreak the BMW, Frank snapped up thesolid engine which meant he neededsomething to put it in. He had a Mondeoas his daily driver at the time, but Frankfound himself lusting after somethingolder, and with a bit more character, so

the plan formed to build a sleeper for abit of useable fun. He sourced the idealcandidate in the shape of this Sierraestate that had covered only 58,000miles and had just one previous ownerto its name. Being a former mechanic, and a dab hand on the spanners, converting the unsuspecting estate intoa tarmac terrorist was hardly a challengefor Franks skills. It took about two daysto build. Anything I couldnt do wasdone by my mate Keith who runs QuestMotorsport. Hes a very clever guy whosgreat at fabrication and has helped withall my cars. He did the important job ofwelding up the exhaust for me so thatoriginal back box stayed in position.Everything else just bolted together, tells Frank. >

Behind the 15-inch steel wheels -complete with the original Sierra hubcaps just as he wanted - sits Cosworthbrakes, suspension parts and GAZcoilovers, which were custom-made atthe rear due to the dierent fitment. A7.5-inch Cosworth dierential is goingon soon, but right now its still on theoriginal di, although he knows this ison borrowed time. Just as intended, theinterior also remains entirely standardand Frank even went to the trouble offitting a Type 9 gear knob on theCosworth T5 gearbox so theres literallyno way of telling what its hiding at all!

Future plans include bigger brakes, but only if he can get them to squeezebehind the steel wheels as they arentchanging anytime soon. Its recently hadnew injectors and cams. So, with aremap, it should be good for 460bhp ona good day. That should make thingsinteresting, as if they arent already.

Its currently 400bhp with 400lb ft oftorque to match, he reveals. It comes instrong and when it does it lights up thetyres. Its first outing was on track atSilverstone, at Ford Fair, and it left a fewpeople surprised! Plus, I still use it as atow car when needed.

However, the Sierra is a stark contrastto Franks finely-finished Mk2 Escort injust about every way. For a start, hesowned this Mk2 for nearly 20 years! Ibought it on my 16th birthday. My matetold me he wanted 50 for it otherwise itwas going to the scrap yard, so I savedit, Frank recalls.

The car was then slowly built up,originally with a 1300cc crossflow, and allon a 56 a week apprentice wage. At thetime it was painted beige, with a guidecoat of primer and no interior, but it didntstay that way. After blowing the firstengine, a 1600cc crossflow was fitted andit didnt stop there. It was my everydaycar for three years and was built on abudget. I swapped the first blue paint jobfor a Sony Playstation! he laughs.

Since then the car has been througha few different guises but, around sixyears ago, it was pulled off the road andtreated to the complete and thoroughrestoration it deserved. This timearound the body was taken back tobare metal and various repairs orpanel replacements were carried outto tackle the rust that had got to itbefore it was painted in the Fiat-derivedblue once again. Virtually everythingthat could be powder-coated beforebeing fitted was powder-coated andthere were plenty of new parts, including the engine. I built a 1700cccrossflow on twin 40 carbs, makingabout 130bhp, but I had a Pinto enginesitting around that needed to be used,he remembers. >

Above: Therehas to besome sort of"Cosworthengine doingthe towingfor a change, shocker"joke here.

I WANTED TO BUILD THE ULTIMATE SLEEPER, ATOTALLY UNSUSPECTING CAR AND I HAD TWO THINGS IPARTICULARLY WANTED TO DO. ONE WAS TO MAKESURE IT HAD THE ORIGINAL HUB CAPS AND THE OTHERWAS TO KEEP THE STANDARD EXHAUST ON SHOW!

So, Frank bit the bullet and had thatbuilt up as a 2.1-litre with Accralitepistons, twin 48 carbs and treated it tosome headwork to make a solid 175bhpor so. Since then, a straight-cut gearboxhas also been added for that authenticrace car sound and, after some bad luckwith the previous engine builds, Frankhas rebuilt the Pinto himself and itsproved to be more reliable than ever. Itneeds to be, as although it looks like ashow car, the Escort was built to beused on the road and on track days, aswell as raced occasionally at Santa Pod.In fact, Frank uses and abuses the car

just about anywhere and everywhere hecan. I do charity rides, hillclimbs, autocross; just any opportunity to use itreally and it gets used in all weathers, too, he declares.

But whilst the Escort is undoubtedlyFranks pride and joy, built to tackleeverything, his Sierra race car has strictlyone purpose. Its actually a genuineSierra Cosworth shell thats now fittedwith a 186bhp naturally aspirated Pinto.I bought it as a crash damaged carabout four years ago, to use as a donor. But, as it had about 360bhp, I wanted touse it first so I repaired it. >

So Frank used the car, put it ontrack and bravely took it to the Spacircuit in Belgium and it was there hedecided he wanted to go circuitracing. After many track days hefound himself needing a competitiveedge to make it interesting, hence theidea of transforming the SierraCosworth into a competition car. Itmade sense as I wanted the YB forsomething else and the rules for myclass say youre allowed a power toweight ratio of 175bhp per tonne, sothe obvious choice to me was to use aPinto engine.

It helped that Frank happened tohave a spare Pinto, which he built upwith a similar specification to his Mk2Escort - but this time with throttlebodies to produce the power reliably. The shell was then built up followingMSA safety regulations and fitted withGAZ coilovers and Wilwood brakesbefore Frank completed his race licenceand ventured on to the track for his firstracing season in 2013. So how has hefound it? Its very demanding, he sayssincerely. There are 32 cars on the trackalthough its easier now Im a bit moreused to it, but its still tough. >

He admits there have been somehighs and lows, highlights being a 3rd inclass and 4th overall at Cadwell Park, lowpoints being the crashes. Itsdisheartening, but thats part and parcelof racing. Its also a lot of expense, but Istill enjoy it and with more power I maychange series next year.

Frank isnt quite done with his fleeteither. Hes currently got a few projectson the go, including a YB powered SierraP100, another Mk2 Escort and a ratherspecial three-door Cosworth that hesbuilding for his equally Ford-lovingfianc Gemma. Sounds like she has beentalking to Frank then... PF

Philip Cobys Mk6 Fiesta lays claim to being the most powerful supercharged STrunning standard internals, a claim thats backed up by an impressive 13.5-

second mile time. But with a fully-forged engine just around the corner, thisST is only just starting to show us what its made of.

  • ention the words FiestaST in Ford tuning circlesthese days, and thechances are that theconversation will turn to

the success story that is the Mk7. TheEcoBoost powered pocket rocket hasproven to be a massive hit not just forFord, but for the UKs tuning houses aswell, the majority of which havedeveloped a number of bolt-onaftermarket kits that can transform theFiesta into a Cossie-beating hot hatch ina matter of hours. Up to 280bhp isalready easily available and werereliably informed that theres plentymore to come yet!

Such is the popularity of the Mk7 SThowever, we could perhaps be accusedof forgetting its illustrious forebear, thegood old Mk6 one of our favouriteperformance Fords of all time. The Mk7might be stealing all the headlines at themoment, but lets not forget that itwasnt so long ago that the Mk6 wasvery much in the limelight, thankschiefly to the fact that it lends itself sowell to a range of tuning avenues andstyles, the most potent of which, ofcourse, is the bolt-on supercharger kitthat was developed by Jam-Sport.

With the addition of a superchargerand few other choice mods, a Mk6ST could see upwards of 300bhp

If you look inthe rear viewmirror and spotan intercooler,it's always agood idea tojust let thempass to avoidembarrassment.

THE MK7 MIGHT BE STEALING ALL THE HEADLINES AT THE MOMENT, BUTLETS NOT FORGET THAT IT WASNT SO LONG AGO THAT THE MK6 WAS VERYMUCH IN THE LIMELIGHT

    PF 031

    Fiesta ST

without hardly breaking a sweat, sowhile it might be a little long-in-the-tooth compared to the flashier Mk7,its still very much a contender. AndPhilip Cobys example is a very goodcase in point. With 300bhp at thewheels, its good enough for a 13.5-second mile, which is genuinesupercar territory. In fact, according toPhilip, his car is the most powerful Mk6ST in the country. Or at least it was, because as you read this, he is already inthe process of taking his Fiesta to thenext level with a full-blown forgedengine build. But before we get to that, lets rewind a few years to the beginningof the story. >

one lady owner, standard Fiesta ST theperfect starting point for a project car.The modifying began soon after withthe addition of a set of AP coilovers, aK&N filter and intake and Vibra-Technicsengine mounts. At the same time, Philipand Craig continued to uprate Craigs carand as such they fitted a second-hand,stage 2.5 supercharger kit along with aCosworth inlet manifold and re-map,which increased the power to aroundthe 300bhp mark. With the superchargeradded to the mix, Philip tells us that thecar was on a dierent level in terms ofperformance, taking it from a verycapable hot hatch to a supercar-rivallingrocket! That hike in performance did, however, come at a price.

Unfortunately, we found out the hardway that buying components second-hand can be a bit of a gamble and in thespace of a few weeks the superchargerblew its oil seals, remembers Philip.Craigs project was brought to astandstill and, eventually, after a lot ofthought, he decided to remove themodifications and sell his car.

Now this could very well have been theend of the story although, thankfully, during a trip to Ford Fair in 2012, Craigmet up with the guys from Jam-Sport andas luck would have it, they discovered thatthe supercharger was still under themanufacturer's warranty. So, after sendingthe faulty unit to Rotrex, the companyagreed to replace it with a brand new one

We love theMk6 Fiesta STand with theaddition of asupercharger, they really dotake somebeating as apackage.

It all started back in 2009 whenPhilips friend, Craig, bought a Mk6 FiestaST. Over the next two years the car wentfrom standard to a very potent 190bhp,thanks to the addition of a Pipercrossintake, 60mm throttle body, Cosworthcams, full Milltek 4:2:1 manifold andexhaust and a custom map to suit plusa Quaife dierential, upgradedsuspension, engine mounts and variousother modifications as well. Thetransformation in performance fromstandard was, in Philips words, epic andhe quickly realised that he wanted to dosomething similar for himself - but usingthe experience from the project onCraigs car to do things a little better. In2011, he bought a very well looked after,

UNFORTUNATELY, WE FOUND OUT THE HARD WAY THAT BUYINGCOMPONENTS SECOND-HAND CAN BE A BIT OF A GAMBLE AND IN THESPACE OF A FEW WEEKS THE SUPERCHARGER BLEW ITS OIL SEALS

  • with the more demanding jobs, such asrebuilding the gearbox with a Quaifedi and fitting the cams and inletmanifold) the project was underway.

The first thing on the agenda was tofind an exhaust system that would bebest suited for the superchargerconversion and after looking at (andlistening to) various systems, Philipwhittled the options down to either a2.5 Milltek supercharger spec exhaustor the more expensive route of having acustom-made exhaust and manifolddesigned and fabricated from scratch.

Happily, Philip was contacted by afriend who was selling a 2.5 customexhaust which had been designed andfabricated by Meerkat Exhausts

specifically for a supercharger project. Were told it was for one of the very firstconversions back in 2008 and came highlyrecommended as one of the best systemsfor the job. Naturally, Philip jumped at thechance of fitting it to his own car.

The next step was to fit the Cosworthcams and parts from Craigs old car, including the Cosworth inlet manifold,60mm throttle body, rebuilt gearbox withQuaife di, Helix racing clutch and colour-coded cam cover. Over the followingmonths, the car had more modificationsincluding front and rear strut braces, rearaxle spacers and front Hubcentric spacers,an Omex rev limiter and launch control, aMk1 Focus ST front brake conversion andbraided hoses all round. >

The 2.0 Duratecin this Fiesta atthe time of theshoot ranstandardinternals but it'sall out at themoment for aforged build.

and the dream of building a superchargedFiesta ST was brought back to life. And, asCraig had already sold his car, it was nowPhilips turn to have some fun, using someof the leftover upgrades from Craigs oldcar and a brand new C30 charger.

The plan for Philips car from start tofinish was to have a constantly evolvingproject, something that could beworked on during the two friends sparetime. It was to have tasteful aesthetics, but most importantly it needed to havesupercar pace in a lightweight package, combined with excellent traction andhandling. So, armed with a selection ofchoice upgrades, plus a few friends whohappened to be Ford-trainedtechnicians (who would come in handy

To say Philip was a bit chued withthe result would be something of anunderstatement.

After the conversion and mappingthe car was absolutely epic and soundedunbelievable with huge pops, bangs andflames on lift o and at the rev limit, hesaid. It ran a 13.5-second standingquarter mile at Crail Raceway on roadtyres. It was dynod by an un-associatedtuner and made 336bhp at the flywheeland 300bhp at the wheels with a

7,000rpm rev limit, making it the mostpowerful supercharged Fiesta ST onstandard engine internals to date!

Now, we all know that rolling roadreadouts can be a little unreliable, and assuch we have to take Philips claim assomething of an unocial record butthanks to the fact its so quick over the1/4-mile were willing to give him thebenefit of the doubt. Especially as his STalso won the fastest front-wheel drivetrophy at the 'Ultimate Scottish Street >

We're lookingforward toseeing the nextevolution ofthis car.

In November 2012, after having thecar fully set up, most of the interiorremoved and some cosmeticmodifications carried out, the Fiesta wasbooked in to have the superchargerconversion carried out at Sitech Racing.Prior to carrying out the conversion, some parts of the kit were alsoimproved, including the superchargerbelt being replaced with a Contitechbelt, upgraded injectors and newsupercharger spec spark plugs.

AFTER THE CONVERSION AND MAPPING THE CAR WAS ABSOLUTELY EPICAND SOUNDED UNBELIEVABLE WITH HUGE POPS, BANGS AND FLAMES ONLIFT OFF AND AT THE REV LIMIT

As ofNovember 2014, the ST was taken othe road for the winter and, at the timeof writing, is currently undergoing a fullyforged conversion and further mappingto increase the rev limit to 8,000rpm.Due to be completed by early spring,Philip has also earmarked a number ofother changes including further weightreduction, racing seats and harnesses, a

  • THE LOTUS TWIN CAM ENGINE HAD ITS INITIAL DESIGN WORK DONE BY HARRY MUNDY AND WAS ORIGINALLY DEVELOPED FOR THE LOTUS ELAN BACK IN THE EARLY 60s

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of this rather unusual Anglia, we have something of a confession to make we dont actually know a great deal about it. Now, before you get all upset and start sending in the hate mail accusing us of being a bunch of lazy numpties who cant be bothered to research a feature car properly, its worth pointing out that the owner of this car doesnt know too much about it either! Which is a shame, because we have a feeling that it could actually be one of the more unusual Fords to have ever graced these pages. Why do we think it might be so special? Well, its mostly down to the plaque on the engines cam cover, a plaque that could indicate this engine was once the heart of a thoroughbred racer and, as such, would make this Anglia one of the coolest retro sleepers weve come across in a long while.

So where did we find it? Well, as it happens we first caught sight of it parked up in the Retromotorsportuk workshop in Stoke-on-Trent, where it was getting a once over after an extended hibernation period. If youre wondering why you might have heard the Retromotorsportuk name before, its because its the same firm that has been tasked with building former PF editor Luke Woods very own Mk1 Escort Cosworth project car. Headed up by Steve Price, a bona fide Ford man through and through and owner of a particularly fine Sierra RS500 called Doris (previously owned by Collins Performance and one of the first road going RS500s ever to be modified), the Retromotorsportuk HQ is, more often

than not, a veritable Aladdins cave of cool Fords. And with this in mind, our first impression of the Anglia was, well, to be honest it just looked like a host of other Anglias weve seen before. Dont get us wrong, thanks to the ride height and a set of Minilite reps, it looked pretty cool, but it didnt look like anything to get too excited about for sure.

That was, of course, until Steve popped the bonnet and showed us the engine. Now, for those of you that dont know, and that may be a fair few considering PF caters for new school and old school Fords these days, the Lotus Twin Cam engine had its initial design work done by Harry Mundy (ex Chief Engine Designer at Coventry Climax) and was originally >

developed for the Lotus Elan back in the early 60s. But this engine does have a strong Anglia connection too, as early in 1962, an Anglia was fitted with an over-bored 109E engine complete with prototype twin-cam alloy cylinder head.

Further refinements were made to the head by Mike Costin (Technical Director at Lotus), and Harry Weslake. Then, in May

1962, Ford announced the five-bearing 1500cc 116E engine and, within two weeks, a 116E engine had been built and fitted with the twin-cam head, slotted into the back of Jim Clarks Lotus 23 single-seater, and raced. Whats more, during the twin-cams development, Ford and Colin Chapman entered into an agreement whereby

Lotus would modify the Cortina for fast road use, fit it with the twin-cam engine, and build sufficient examples (1,000) to get the model homologated for Group 2 racing. Thus was born the iconic Lotus Cortina, which was also kitted out with the Elans gearbox and a host of other go faster bits. So thats a quick history lesson for you, the point being that the twin-cam engine is a real thoroughbred - one that has motorsport DNA coursing through its veins.

The engine fitted to this Anglia, with its special plaque, which, if genuine, would indicate that it was originally prepared specifically for competition use, possibly in a Mk1 or Mk2 Cortina race car. Precisely how it found its way to its current home at the heart of this Anglia is something of a mystery, although what we do know is that Darren, its current owner, bought the car from Ireland about six years ago with the engine already fitted and has done very little with it since. As we mentioned, this Anglias been off the road for quite some time and if it wasnt for Steve convincing Darren that he should really do the decent thing and get it running again, the chances are it would still be gathering dust in the back of a garage.

ENGINE: 1700cc Lotus Twin Cam, twin 40 DCOE carbs, level 2 Lotus cams, Lotus big valve head, high compression pistons, 11.5:1 compression ratio (approx), multi-layer steel head gasket, 105Speed 4:2:1 exhaust manifold, 105Speed exhaust system, MSD ignition coil kit, 135-140bhp (estimate).

TRANSMISSION: 4-speed, 2000E close ratio rocket box, English axle with Quaife diffsuspension: 2.8i Capri front legs, Milton A frame kit, GAZ dampers

BRAKES: 4-pot Princess calipers with Capri 2.8i discs, Fiesta XR2 solid rear discs with Cosworth calipers

INTERIOR: Series 2 RS Turbo seats and door cards, standard rear bench with Mk3 Escort RS1600i cloth trim, Smiths gauges in custom dash pod, Q/R steering wheel

    WHEELS/TYRES: 7.5x13 Minilite replicas

While we dont know the exact story behind the engine or the conversion, we do know that the engine is a motorsport-derived unit and not a regular road-going version. According to Steve, who gave it a thorough inspection during its recent tune up, it has been bored and stroked to increase the capacity to around 1700cc. The head is also a Lotus big valve item, it has Lotus stage two cams, high compression pistons (Steve estimates the compression ratio to be around 11.5:1) a multi-layer steel head gasket and a pair of snorty Weber 40 DCOE carbs. In addition, it has also been fitted with an MSD ignition coil kit, an 105Speed 4:2:1 exhaust manifold and a full 105Speed exhaust system. Steve estimates the power output to be somewhere around 135-140bhp. Not the kind of horsepower figures that would worry most modern hot hatches for sure, but in a lightweight rear-wheel drive Anglia, its more than enough to make things interesting!

To complement the power, the Lotus twin-cam has been mated to a snappy four-speed 2000E close ratio rocket box which is in turn linked to a Quaife diff and an English rear axle think easy, controllable, old school oversteer and lots of it! To help this Anglia lay down its twin-cam power, a Milton A frame kit has been fitted. This is designed to do the same job as anti-tramp bars and a Panhard rod by preventing axle tramp and eliminating sideways axle movement at the same time. Did we mention the oversteer already?

When its not on the lock-stops, this Anglia is clearly capable of a decent turn of speed and with that in mind, it also has some decent stopping power, thanks to a set of Princess 4-pots and 2.8i Capri discs up front (mated to 2.8i Capri uprights of course) plus a pair of Fiesta XR2 solid discs and Cosworth calipers at the back for good measure.

All in all, its a fantastic package and thanks to the efforts of Steve and Retromotorsportuk to make the Anglia roadworthy once more, its a great

looking one as well. Steve tells us that he had to replace both rear quarters as the rot had well and truly set in. And, whilst the pictures might not do it justice, we can assure you that he has done a fantastic job with regards to the bodywork. As well as breathing life back into the exterior, Steve also turned his attention to the interior which, in his words, was looking a little past its best. Previously kitted out with a pair of RS1600i seats (hence the RS1600i cloth trim that still adorns the rear bench), Steve says that he managed to convince Darren to upgrade to the Series 2 Escort RS Turbo Recaros that he also had laying around and, as a result, these now take pride of place in the Anglias cabin. While he was at it, Steve also fixed the dodgy electronics (apparently the wiring was so bad, the interior light came on when the ignition key was turned), made a custom gauge pod for the Smiths dials and fitted a neat Q/R steering wheel as well.

Ultimately, when you consider the spec and the way it looks, sounds and drives, it doesnt really matter that we

dont know the exact specifics of how this Anglia has ended up how it has. Lets just take it at face value, which is a retro cool road car, with a race engine up front, and leave it at that! What we do know for sure, however, is that Darren is a man that likes his old school Fords because as well as this car, he also owns another Anglia that hes planning on turning into the mother of all Cossie YB powered track cars. As with the road car, Steve and Retromotorsportuk have been tasked with making it happen and if you read the Our Cars pages this month, youll see some work in progress pics of it. Heres a clue, its the one with interior that looks like a touring car! Keep your eyes peeled for a full feature once its finished at least with this car, well be able to tell you where it originated from PF

    PFVERSUS Hydro Graphics

And, Hydro Graphics is becoming an increasingly popular way of customising pretty much any part you can think of. There are companies that do this, and there are kits that you can buy that let you do it at home. So guess what? Yes, weve got you a kit - and this month you will be dipping

You had some time off over Christmas, but its back to the grindstone now. Personalising a car is big business, whether its changing the colour of a cam cover, filling the window with stickers, or replacing boring plastic parts with shiny chrome or trendy carbon fibre.

    The Challenge

Everyone wants an easy way of customising parts of their car, so we have furnished Morley with a MyDipKit and told him to get on with it.

Words and Photography: Performance Ford Mag

Morley's thoughtsThis sounds like fun. I

always like to learn new things. Given that the kit that has been supplied is carbon fibre (I was worried I might have ended up with flames, and the last time I saw flames on a car of mine they were under the bonnet of my Mk2 Escort during a power run)! Anyhow, I decided to have a go at dipping the bit of trim in which the heater controls live in the centre of the dash. No pressure, then. Its only the most obvious bit in the car. Right, lets do this.

something from that Focus ST to make it look better. Remember - the key word here is better!

Oh, in case you didnt know, Hydro Graphics is the process of taking a two-dimensional graphic or design and printing it onto the surface of any three -dimensional solid object. >
