HIGHLIGHTS• Began offering a popular tech series for Young People including sessions on

Raspberry Pi and playing Minecraft. Minecraft sessions regularly filled the computer lab and expanded to a second session at Lincoln Branch, offering experiences to a neighborhood that does not have equal access. Levels the playing field

• Offered monthly free concerts open to all ages

• Hosted the national traveling exhibit “Changing America” that explored the relationship between Abolition and Civil Rights movement. Grant from the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History and American Library Association Public Programs Office. Made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the Human Endeavor

• Hosted: Lincoln, The Constitution and The Civil War that explored how President Lincoln used the constitution to confront the secession of southern states, slavery and wartime liberties. Organized by National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. Made possible by major grant rom the National Endowment for the Humanities. Accompanied by various programs some supported by the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

• Changing America: The Emancipation Proclamation, 1863 and the March on Washington, 1963, viewed by approximately 6,000 people at the Main Library, helped our community understand the relationship between these two great peoples’ movements and take inspiration from those who marched toward freedom.

• Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War, viewed by approximately 4,800 people at the Main Library,  showed our community how President Abraham Lincoln’s leadership and constitutional vision steered the nation through its most turbulent years and into a future that forever changed America.

• Peoria Reads! selection Warriors Don’t Cry: A Searing Memoir of the Battle to Integrate Little Rock’s Central High brought thousands of Peorians together to discuss this one important topic.

• Author Kate Klise presented a writer’s workshop for children

• New York Times best-selling author Mary Monroe presented a program at Pajama Night Read

• Summer Reading “Paws to Read” attracted record-breaking 5, 585 readers, each of whom read 3 hours a week between June and the end of July. 1,385 readers attended the Summer Reading party at the Peoria Riverfront Museum, the largest crowd the museum had hosted at any one point. District 150 and PAWS were partners along with Friends of Peoria Public Library

• Peoria Historical Society presented their 2014 Historic Preservation Award to Peoria Public Library for Lincoln Branch preservation

• 748 District 150 students participated in “Show Me Your Library Card” in order to win books for their school libraries. A total of $325 worth of books were awarded to four schools. Funding provided by Friends of Peoria Public Library

• An ongoing collaborative partnership with Peoria Public Schools District 150 has resulted in more students and teachers with library cards, improved communication between library staff and school staff, regular informational sessions presented by the library for school library managers, classroom story/craft times presented by children’s librarians from Peoria Public Library, and bi-weekly Bookmobile stops at nine District 150 schools.

• British author Jo Baker attracted 90 people to her talk on her book Longbourn. The award-winning author visited a select few libraries on her U.S. tour.

• Friends of Peoria Public Library won the Pat Landen Award from The Central Illinois Public Relations Association for the publicity campaign created by library staff for the event “The World of Downton Abbey with Jessica Fellowes” The event was a “friend-raiser” that brought 134 new memberships to the Friends and exposed thousands of people to a message about how The Friends assist in bringing programming to Peoria Public Library.

• A “Database miniseries” was held for homeschooling parents introducing them to Brainfuse/Help Now, Mango Languages and local history resources.

• Former Peorian and award-winning mystery author Dorothy Cannell appeared at an afternoon tea fund-raising event for the Friends

• Launched a revised circulation policy that ensures more materials are circulated to more people

• A graphic novel writing contest for students was held. Graphic novel writing workshops were presented at North Branch and Lakeview Branch to prepare students for the contest.

• E-book programs Alliance Digital Media Library and E-Read Illinois increased check out allowances from 3 to 5 and added new easy apps for accessing content on all devices. E-read Illinois now over 18,000 titles.

• A Back to Books Grant of $3,000 from Illinois State Library, a Division of the Office of the Secretary of State using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Technology Act added 200 new Spanish-language books to the collection at Lincoln Branch to meet the demand for Spanish-language materials in a changing neighborhood.

Celebrated Family Reading Night, statewide celebration, with family reading activities

• Co-sponsored Winter Read with Peoria Reads! and Peoria Community Against Violence (PCAV) as a support for the Don’t Shoot Program. Peoria Public Library, Peoria Reads!, and Peoria Community Against Violence (PCAV) worked together to initiate a new city-wide reading program called “Winter Read”  to encourage individuals and groups in Peoria to read one or all of the selected books and participate in discussions about building a safe community.

5595 People of all ages read for more than 117,495 hours over seven weeks

The Friends provided support for the programming and other extras not covered by the budget. They pay for the Summer Reading party each year, support author visits, provide materials and prizes for children’s programs and more.
