Points, the 1993 Dragons enjoyed a perfect (11-0) dual meet season. After advancing in the state series with a second-place finish in the regionals, Pekin went on to win the sectional tournament, as well as the IHSA Boys Golf Class AA state championship. Points led the charge to the team title by earning individual medalist honors at the state tournament. 1981-1982 ICC Men's Basketball Team e Cougars were 25-12 in 1981-82 when they won the last single-division Illinois Junior College state tournament and advanced to the NJCAA national tournament. ICC's run to the Illinois state title included an upset of top-seeded Wabash Valley. Washington product Randy Holzhauer poured in 26 points in the championship win against Lincoln. 1976-1977 Washington Girls Basketball Team e Panthers capped an 18-4 campaign by finishing as the runners-up in the inaugural IHSA Girls Basketball state championship tournament, falling to an undefeated Sterling squad in the title game. After winning four conference championships in the 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters at Princeville, Hill-Schupbach claimed 10 Missouri Valley Conference cross country and track individual championships at Bradley from 1996-2000, while also twice earning NCAA Division I All-America honors in the 5,000 meters. In addition to her individual titles at the 1998 and 1999 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Championships, Hill-Schupbach led the Braves to their first-ever conference crown in any women’s sport in school history as co-champions with Drake in 1998. A seven-time Academic All- American, Hill-Schupbach received a prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship and was the recipient of the inaugural Dr. Charlotte West Award as the year’s top all-around, graduating student-athlete in the Missouri Valley Conference. She also was selected the Illinois NCAA Woman of the Year in 2000. A. J. Guyton Peoria High School, Indiana University Guyton was a two-time, first-team all-state selection as a boys basketball player at Peoria High School. After his graduation in 1996, Guyton starred at Indiana, where he was selected the team most valuable player all four seasons while scoring more than 2,100 career points. e 1997 Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Year, Guyton was a consensus All-American in 2000, when he also was selected the Big Ten Player of the Year. A member of the IU All-Century Team, Guyton was the 32nd overall selection in the 2000 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls and he played in 80 NBA games in two seasons with the Bulls and Golden State Warriors. Sergio McClain Manual High School, University of Illinois e 1997 Illinois Mr. Basketball, McClain helped Peoria Manual High School to four consecutive IHSA Boys Basketball state championships during his prep career from 1993-97. A three-time all-state selection, McClain continued his basketball career at Illinois, where he played in 128 games and helped the Illini to a pair of Big Ten Conference championships and the 2001 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. Walt Durdle Old Timer Inductee Representing Peoria Woodruff High School, Durdle was the medalist of the 1950-51 IHSA Boys Golf State Championship. He went on to win the Peoria Men's Golf City Championship in 1952 and 1958 before becoming the head professional at the Peoria Park District’s Newman Golf Course. Durdle died in 2001 and will be inducted posthumously. THE TEAMS

1993 Pekin Boy's Golf Team

Led by current PGA Tour professional D.A. Points, the 1993 Dragonsenjoyed a perfect (11-0) dual meet season. After advancing in the stateseries with a second-place finish in the regionals, Pekin went on to winthe sectional tournament, as well as the IHSA Boys Golf Class AA statechampionship. Points led the charge to the team title by earning individual medalist honors at the state tournament.

1981-1982 ICC Men's Basketball Team

e Cougars were 25-12 in 1981-82 when they won the lastsingle-division Illinois Junior College state tournament andadvanced to the NJCAA national tournament. ICC's run tothe Illinois state title included an upset of top-seeded WabashValley. Washington product Randy Holzhauer poured in 26points in the championship win against Lincoln.

Hill-Schupbach starred in the area as both a prep star and collegian, first at Princeville HighSchool then at Bradley, as one of the area’s top female distance runners. Walt Durdle Old Timer Inductee

Representing Peoria Woodruff High School, Durdlewas the medalist of the 1950-51 IHSA Boys Golf StateChampionship. NEVE HARMS MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARDLarry Leitner

Larry Leitner was among the state’selite officials for more than 40years, officiating high school, col-lege and professional sportingevents from 1960 through 2003and he remains involved in sportsby serving on the board of directors

for the Pekin Insurance Holiday Tournament, as well as evaluat-ing current officials and moderating IHSA rules clinics.

Among his officiating highlights, Leitner worked more IHSA bas-ketball and football tournament games than any official in thestate’s history, earning 27 consecutive boys basketball regional as-signments. He also worked the IHSA boys basketball state finalsin 1973, 1974 and 1976, including the 1976 championship game,and three IHSA football finals, including the first-ever 2A statechampionship game in 1974. A charter member of the GatewayConference officiating crew in 1988, Leitner was part of the crewthat officiated the 1990 and 1993 NCAA Division I-AA quarter-finals and he served as an associate official for the Big Ten Con-ference from 1984-88.

Leitner also was called upon to officiate two IESA state champi-onship games, the 1990 National Catholic Basketball finals, threeShriner All-Star football games and the 1980 IBCA All-Star Clas-sic, while also working for two seasons in the Midwest Profes-sional Football League.

Leitner is a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Associa-tion, Peoria Officials and Bloomington/Normal Officials Halls ofFame.

The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame’s mission is to promote the manyand varied sports programs in the Greater Peoria area (Peoria, Tazewell,and Woodford Counties). Our aim is to honor those men, women and teamsthat have contributed to the area’s rich sports history. With the cooperationof the Peoria Civic Center Commission, and generous community supportwe have served the area since 1979.

It Happened in Greater Peoria Sports History

e Peoria Socials Athletic Club was a popular sports club in Peoria.It started in February 1900 with just $12 in its treasury. It was in-corporated by the State of Illinois in 1905 and had its headquartersat 901 North Adams. A Chicago newspaper called it the greatest sportsclub in the Midwest. eir annual banquet was attended by nationalsports figures such as heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney. Inthe early 1920s the great Red Grange was a greeter at the White SwanInn on Big Hollow Road. He was there to help promote the strugglingLawrence Orchestra that was playing there. Grange was quoted assaying he was inspired by the Peoria Social Sports Club.

Tri-County Male Athlete of the YearCole Henderson

With three individual state championships to hiscredit, Henderson’s 31 points at the 2013 IHSA3A Boys Track and Field Championship gavePekin Community High School a third-placeteam finish. Henderson won state titles in the long

jump, 100 meters and 200 meters. An all-conference wide receiveron the grid iron, Henderson returned from a hip injury to help theDragons football team win its final three regular-season games toearn a playoff berth.

Tri-County Female Athlete of the YearTaylor McClintock

McClintock capped her all-star prep career by av-eraging 29.5 points per game on the basketballcourt last winter, helping Illini Bluffs High Schoolto 29 wins and an appearance in the IHSA 1AGirls Basketball state finals. e three-time Peoria

Journal Star Small School Girls Basketball Player of the Year andfirst-team IBCA All-State selection ended her career last winterwith 3,073 points. She is currently a freshman for the Mercer Uni-versity women’s basketball team in the NCAA Division I AtlanticSun Conference.

Tri-County Male Coach of the YearDarrel Crouch

e football head coach at Washington Commu-nity High School, Crouch led the Panthers to afinal 12-1 record. e Panthers earned an unde-feated, Mid-Illini Conference championship and

won 12 consecutive games to start a season for the first time inprogram history. Following the devastating tornadoes Nov. 17,Washington’s run ended in the IHSA 5A state semifinals.

Tri-County Female Coach of the YearCathy Sanders

e girls volleyball head coach at Fieldcrest HighSchool, Sanders led the Knights to their first-everstate finals appearance, finishing the year with a33-4-1 record and fourth-place finish in the IHSA1A state tournament.

Chuck was a member of the 1953 and 1960 Caterpillar Cats Basketball teams that were inducted into theGreater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1991. Chuck was an outstanding high school and college basketball playerin North Dakota. He was named all-conference forward three times as a member on the University of NorthDakota basketball team. He was a managing partner of Halstead & Wolfe Realtors for more than 35 years.

Doc was in the original group that founded the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame. He served as its presidentfor 22 years. He also was events doctor for the Bass Masters Tournaments, e Professional BowlingAssociation and Peoria TT Motorcycle Races. He opened Higgins Chiropractic Clinic in Peoria in 1978.

He was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 as a member of the Gipps Jr All Stars.Bob was an-outstanding 3-sport athlete at Spalding Institute. He lettered in baseball at Notre Dame andBradley Universities and after college he played minor league baseball for the Peoria Chiefs. He graduatedfrom Notre Dame Law School and practiced law in Peoria. He was appointed states attorney in 1967 andretired as Chief Judge of the 10th Circuit.

Larry was past president of the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame and was an officer in the several Peoriaarea sports organizations including Old Time Baseball Association, Independent Sports Club, and BradleyBraves Club. He owned and managed Coleman Printing for 35 years and retired in April 2013.

Elmo was an outstanding athlete at Peoria Manual. He was a member of Manual’s undefeated 1949 StateChampionship Baseball Team that was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. He wasalso a member of Manual’s 1949 and 1950 undefeated football teams that were both inducted into theGreater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
