It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on the prisoners, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that you may do the will of God and receive what is promised. "For yet a little while, and the coming one shall come and shall not tarry; but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him." But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and keep their souls.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time Jesus said, "But when you see the desolating sacrilege set up where it ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains; let him who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything away; and let him who is in the field not turn back to take his mantle. And alas for those who are with child and for those who give suck in those days! Pray that it may not happen in winter. For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will be. And if the Lord had not shortened the days, no human being would be saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. And then if any one says to you, `Look, here is the Christ!' or `Look, there he is!' do not believe it. False Christs and false prophets will arise and show signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But take heed; I have told you all things beforehand.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

The Synod of the Church in the Province of the West Indies is being held in Barbados this week. The Previous one was held three years ago in Montego Bay, Jamaica and was the first I was privileged to attend.

I was re-elected by the local Synod to serve a second term and so along with another member of our church Mr. Charles Leacock, the Provincial C h a n c e l l o r w i l l b e a m o n g t h e va r i o u s representatives this week.

The West Indies became a self-governing Province of the worldwide Anglican Communion in 1883 because of the Church of England missions in territories that became British colonies.

Initially the provincial synod consisted entirely of bishops. This was changed in 1959, when the synod became fully representative with the addition of clergy and laity. Meetings of synod are held every three years.

The members of the Synod are drawn from the eight Dioceses of the Province and is chaired by His Grace the Archbishop of the West Indies.

The Provincial Synod similar to the local Sacred Synod comprises three Houses namely the House of Bishops, the House of Clergy and the House of Laity. The pre-synod meeting would have seen the three Houses meeting separately.

The Houses will sit together in order to discuss the various recommendations coming out of the reports of the various Commissions of the Synod along with the various resolutions that will be brought for consideration.

New to the Province was the need to appoint a Caribbean Facilitator to the Anglican Alliance, particularly in view of the fact that the Church in the Province of the West Indies is at a disadvantage because of the language barrier with the Church in Latin America.

The Anglican Alliance was created to connect and strengthen the development, relief and advocacy activities of Anglican churches, agencies and networks. The Anglican Alliance brings these

entities together to work for a world free of poverty and injustice among other things.

The Church is the Province continues to proclaim the doctrine of Christ, calling persons to respond positively to the Gospel of peace and to hold the catholic faith which saints of old believed.

Pray for the synod this week as the church in our region seeks to deal with the challenges of a modern Caribbean society and by extension the world in which we live.

The triennial Provincial Synod is being held in Barbados this week. It begins with a celebration of the Holy Mass this evening at 4:00pm in the St. Michael’s Cathedral. All are invited to attend the Mass.

ANNUAL INDEPENDENCE SERVICE This year we celebrate our 49th Anniversary as an Independent nation. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held on Sunday November 29th at 4:00pm in the LLoyd Erskine Sandiford Center. The public is invited to attend.

HEALTH CORNER by Dr. Sophia Marshall

Recently, there has been a great deal of talk in the media about the PSA blood test and early detection of prostate cancer. This week we will take a look at this test.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced by prostate cells. It is mostly found in semen but a small amount is present in the blood. Measuring the PSA level can increase the chance of finding prostate cancer at an early stage. A high PSA level has been linked to an increased chance of having prostate cancer. However other conditions can cause elevated PSA levels as well. If the result of the test is abnormal, a prostate biopsy is needed to determine if you have cancer. A PSA test does not diagnose cancer, but it can be used along with other tests to determine if cancer is present.

Most healthy men have levels under 4 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) of blood. When prostate cancer is present, the PSA level usually goes above 4ng/ml.

This test is available at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, for a small fee and the results should be taken to the referring doctor for interpretation. Men, please take advantage of this service, it may save your life! Early detection is your best protection!
