LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT AND READINGS

THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 59 beginning at the 9th verse

Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness does not overtake us; we look for light, and behold, darkness, and for brightness, but we walk in gloom. We grope for the wall like the blind, we grope like those who have no eyes; we stumble at noon as in the twilight, among those in full vigor we are like dead men. We all growl like bears, we moan and moan like doves; we look for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us. For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us,and we know our iniquities: transgressing, and denying the LORD, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart lying words. Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands afar off; for truth has fallen in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter. Truth is lacking, and he who departs from evil makes himself a prey. The LORD saw it, and it displeased him that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no one to intervene; then his own arm brought him victory, and his righteousness upheld him. He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; he put on

garments of vengeance for clothing, and wrapped himself in fury as a mantle. According to their deeds, so will he repay, wrath to his adversaries, requital to his enemies; to the coastlands he will render requital. So they shall fear the name of the LORD from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the LORD drives.

Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 13 Usque quo, Domine?

1.How long, O Lord? will you forget me for ever?* how long will you hide your face from me?

2.How long shall I have perplexity in my mind, and grief in my heart, day after day?* how long shall my enemy triumph over me?

3.Look upon me and answer me, O Lord my God;* give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death;

4.Lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed over him,"* and my foes rejoice" that I have fallen.

5.But I put my trust in your mercy; * my heart is joyful because of your saving help.

6.I wil1 sing to the Lord, for he has dealt with me richly; * I will praise the Name of the Lord Most High.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Hebrews Chapter 5 beginning at the 12th verse

Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need some one to teach you again the first principles of God's word. You need milk, not solid food; for every one who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their faculties trained by practice to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,…. Though we speak thus, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things that belong to salvation. For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love which you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do. And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness in realizing the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises. Reader: Here ends the Reading All: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time Jesus and his disciples came to Jericho; and as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, Bartimae'us, a blind beggar, the son of Timae'us, was sitting by the roadside. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" And Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." And they called the blind man, saying to him, "Take heart; rise, he is calling you." And throwing off his mantle he sprang up and came to Jesus. And Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" And

Page 6: Pentecost 22 [2015]

the blind man said to him, "Master, let me receive my sight." And Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well." And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

Recently once again information from news media organizations have caused us to express concern about issues and challenges among a section of our young population.

Police reports are that young people at times as early as eleven years of age are involved in behaviours that will land them in lots of trouble with lawful authorities.

There are of course many of us in society who have a deep love for young people and want to see them do well.

It is fantastic when we see young people using their skills and abilities and at times scarce resources in order to further themselves as they seek to learn about this bright and beautiful world in which we live.

We recognize that the family is the primary context in which our children will grow and learn the behaviours that are so vital for living in community.

In the family they learn to love, share, respect property and rights and other graces so necessary in recognising that we participate in this world with others.

It is significant that in the incarnation, our Lord and God came into the world within the context of the human family.

In this God almighty blesses and hallows family life, placing emphasis on the usefulness of such relationships so that a young person will not only learn the social

!6

Page 7: Pentecost 22 [2015]

graces; but participate in life, culture, religion and heritage.

All of these go together and when they become disconnected it becomes clear that there is potential for some behaviours that, to say the least, do not make for the best living in community.

The church upholds family life to the extent that prayers are offered for the the homes of the newly baptised asking that as Christ shared the life of an earthly home in Nazareth so likewise God will bless the homes of the children and give grace and wisdom to all who have the care of them. (BCP, CPWI page 281)

The holy church deems that grace and wisdom are vital for those who have the gift and care of children in order that the said children will grow to know and love Jesus.

We pray that parents, grandparents and guardians however young will recognize the tremendous responsibility that is theirs and ensure that children and youth grow in ways that are positive and affirming.

Your friend and priest,

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

• Stage 3A – no tumour is found in the breast or it is under

5cm and has spread to the lymph nodes in the armpit (which are clumped together) or it is bigger than 5cm and has spread to the lymph nodes.

• Stage 3B – the cancer has spread to tissue near the breast and may be attached to skin or muscle. There are usually cancer cells in the lymph nodes in the armpit.

• Stage 3C – the cancer has spread to 10 or more lymph nodes in the armpit, or to lymph nodes below the breastbone, near the neck or under the collarbone.

Sometimes stage 3 breast cancer is called locally advanced breast cancer.

Stage 4 The cancer has spread to other parts of the body such as the bones, liver or lungs. This is called secondary or metastatic breast cancer.

American Cancer Society recommendations for early breast

cancer detection

✓ Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.

✓ Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a periodic (regular) health exam by a health professional, at least every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health professional every year.

✓ Women at high risk for breast cancer based on certain factors should have a mammogram every year.
