Bread of heaven, on Thee we feed, for Thy flesh is meat indeed:

Ever may our souls be fed with this true and living bread;

Day by day with strength supplied, through the life of Him who died.

Vine of heaven, Thy Blood supplies this blest cup of sacrifice:

Lord, Thy wounds our healing give, to Thy cross we look, and live:

Jesus, may we ever be grafted, rooted, built in Thee.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us

so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace

and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our

Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever

and ever. Amen.

THE LESSONS Congregation seated

The First Lesson Hebrews 10:11-25

11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,

16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,”

17 then he adds,

“I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean

. 5 .

. S J D . O R G .

from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Hymn 632 Munich

The Gospel Mark 13:1-8

Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

1 And as Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”

3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord.

People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE SERMON The Most Rev. Josiah Idowu-Fearon

THE NICENE CREED standing BCP 358

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

. 7 .

. S J D . O R G .

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Congregation kneeling

Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

People: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all;

presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be

the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to

your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by

the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ,

and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the

everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the

firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

. 1 2 .

. S J D . O R G .

Celebrant: And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

Celebrant: The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

Anthem David Ashley White b.1944

Lord, for thy tender mercy’s sake, lay not our sins to our charge,

but forgive that is past, and give us grace to amend our sinful lives.

To decline from sin and incline to virtue,

that we may walk in a perfect heart before thee,

now and evermore, Amen.

Text: Lidley’s Prayers, 1566

TODAY’S MUSICAL OFFERINGKeep in touch with SJD Music at our blog:

sjdmusic.wordpress.com.

Church composers living in Tudor England found themselves in a particular

predicament, as for a significant period following the death of Henry VIII

of England, the crown swung between Anglicanism and Catholicism. Many

composers who made their living writing for the church during this turbulent

period had to adapt to the prevailing religion of the day, writing Latin motets

when the crown was Catholic and English anthems when the crown was

Anglican. William Byrd was one of these composers who found himself writing

for both churches throughout his career. Today, we hear his Latin communion

motet “Ave Verum” sung at the Offertory.

Houston composer David Ashley White is a widely commissioned, performed,

and published composer of secular and sacred music. He has been a member of

the music composition and theory faculty of the University of Houston’s Moores

School of Music for over thirty years, and his compositions have been recorded

by local ensembles such as the Houston Chamber Choir. His hymns appear in

several hymnals, including The Hymnal 1982, as well as in three collections that

contain his complete output. At the Ministration we hear his setting of “Lord,

for thy tender mercy’s sake,” a text taken from the collection “Lidley’s Prayers”

as published in 1566 by English Protestant theological writer Henry Bull.

OUR VISITING PREACHER

St. John the Divine has been honored and pleased to have a visit this week from

The Most Rev. Josiah Idowu-Fearon from Nigeria. Bishop Fearon preaches at the

morning services in the Church today. He has served as the Secretary General

of the Anglican Communion since 2015. Prior to his appointment, Bishop

Idowu-Fearon served the Anglican Church of Nigeria as Bishop of Kaduna and

Archbishop of the Province of Kaduna.

Bishop Fearon has long been a proponent of interfaith dialogue, bridge-building,

and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria and how that is

relevant to our time and place.

“My prayer to God is very simple, that I would be able to be a bridge-

builder; to create the culture of respect for differences, a culture of

accepting people as human beings and loving them for who they are

in Christ. If within the Communion, we have this understanding, we

can live together with our differences.”

The Most Rev. Josiah Idowu-Fearon

Welcome Bishop Fearon!
