Teen Speak, “Youth have a voice too” “January 16th, 2013” A program that was originally launched by former WPHS CIS Site Director, Nia Williams continues to be a major success every year even beyond her departure. Teen Speak allows students to express themselves through song, poetry and personal expression followed by a discussion panel that brings students and adults from teachers to community volunteers together in a safe environment to discuss current issues. Thank you to all 2013 participants!!!

Washington D.C. welcomes CIS-WPHS “January 25th, 2013” Communities In Schools of William Penn

celebrated the Martin Luther King holiday with their annual Washington DC field trip. This year’s itinerary included, Howard University “Walking Tour”, the Smithsonian American History Museum, & a good old-fashioned home-cooked southern meal at Carolina’s Kitchen. The students really had a heart-felt experience at the history museum, where they had the opportunity to participate in an interactive exhibit on the Civil Rights

Era during the 1960s. This is surely one annual celebration that proves to be more than just a field trip.

Trevor is a consistent volunteer at WPHS and continues to exhibit strong leadership skills. The article explored reasons why more high school graduates should become mentors. Trevor, stated that, “it is important to be able to relate to kids where they are, and for him he finds it easy to do so”. Trevor currently volunteers with The Gentleman’s Club at William Penn and is preparing to enter the National Guard. Congratulations to Trevor on this recognition and we are proud to see a CIS alumni doing amazing things!

Be a CIS Volunteer: YOU can make an impact!!

The following opportunities are available for community members, parents, etc.:

• Lunch Time Mentoring- Eat lunch once a week with a student. Sharing good conversation with friends over a meal is something we all love. Lunches are in 30 minute segments. Which lunch schedule works best for you? Lunch A 11:00-11:30 Lunch B 11:30-12:00 Lunch C 12:00-12:30

• After-school Tutoring- Many students just need that one-on-one attention for their “ah-ha moment.” Students could benefit from your help with completing homework and/or class assignments, gaining confidence in reading or math, and basic tutoring. Students can work with you one-on-one or in small groups.

• Career Speakers- Come tell us your professional and personal journey. Many times success seems like a distant dream instead of an attainable reality. Sharing your journey helps put things into perspective for our students.

Attention Parents…Students will not be allowed to participate in CIS programs and events without proper

permission slips and documentation being returned prior to appropriate deadlines. Thank you!
