Connecting community resources with schools —to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life. We believe that every child needs and deserves the Five Basics:

1. A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult

2. A safe place to learn and grow

3. A health start and healthy future

4. A marketable skill to use upon graduation

5. A chance to give back to peers and community.

CSI school-based programs are designed to provide students with at least one of these REAL basics.

9-on-9 Clean UP Service Project

“Re-scheduled for April 27th, 2013” The service project entitled, The “9-‐on-‐9” has created quite a reputation for itself at William Penn High School. The clean-‐up project organized by students that helped to collect more than 25

trash bags of garbage is coming back for yet a second year. Many remnants still exist from the initial event that took place on March 9th, 2012. Proud past participants wear t-‐shirts that were given out at the event. This year the project is shaping up to be bigger and better. One of the changes this year is that the event will occur on a Saturday. Preparations are certainly underway and this year promises to be another great success.

Black History Month “Womans’ Appreciation Night” hosted by The Gentleman’s Club On Wednesday, February 27th, 2013, young men from the Gentleman’s Club hosted an appreciation event for women who have had a significant impact on their lives. This event included dinner, entertainment and recognition at William Penn High School. Even, the superintendent of Colonial School District could not ignore the delicious aromas and positive energy coming from the event. The event honored women including mothers, grandmothers, teachers, staff and students. Special presentations were given by Gentleman’s Club members: Justin Davis, Kenny Ope and Antonio Collazo. Once again thank you to all the volunteers, sponsors and students who helped to make this event a huge success! Meet our Interns… Jordan Bailey, Maya Swartz & Stephanie Tocco The CIS Office is excited to welcome 3, yes three amazing young vibrant, educated, enthusiastic college interns from the University of Delaware who are satisfying their final degree requirements by serving with Communities In Schools at William Penn High School. All three are pursing B.S. degrees in Human Services and are getting an up-close experience with the many activities, programs and opportunities offered by Communities In Schools at William Penn.

Be Proud, Be Responsible “Curriculum launches with Pearls of Wisdom & A.C.H.I.E.V.E. Academy” Communities In Schools of Delaware is all about establishing effective and positive relationships that can not only impact students, but also allow them an opportunity to learn and grow into their lives beyond high school. At William Penn High School, the Communities In Schools staff is implementing a curriculum entitled, “Be Proud, Be Responsible”, which provides sex health education in a way that speaks to students, but also provides an educational component that is productive to the learning process. The projected number of students who will experience the curriculum by the end of March 2013 will be more than 50.

‘Special Message of Encouragement’

The work of an educator never ends at the final ring of the bell that marks the last minute of class for the day. If anything, this sparks new ideas of a recurring cycle that immediately begins upon the completion of the 7-hour school class schedule. For this alone, an educator’s job is a precious phenomena that surely can be overshadowed when reading the “News Journal” or watching the latest gains on Wall Street via online business alerts. However, there are many of us who appreciate the hard work including both hours and efforts put in by educators throughout the state of Delaware and especially here at William Penn High School.

The classes can be intense and the hours you study never really seem to balance out to all the questions you experience on an exam…I know it’s unfair right…Wrong!

You can do it because you are the best we have and we believe in you…hang in there and finish the year strong.

Student Spotlight Phillip “Dalton” Brooks

Dalton as we call him has performed exceedingly well while a student at the newly established A.C.H.I.E.V.E. Academy of William Penn High School. Dalton began the year as a ninth grader and has regained enough credits throughout the year to now be considered a rising senior! We, at the A.C.H.I.E.V.E. Academy have found a renewed spirit and confidence within Dalton and are proud to see his progress from the launch of the program in November 2012. Continue the good work Dalton…stay focused, and continue achieving!

Community Member Spotlight

Mr. Kevin McIntosh Kevin McIntosh is a model citizen who serves his country through his military service and also volunteers his time and money to impact children throughout William Penn High School. Mr. McIntosh has helped to sponsor more than 30 students this year in various programs and activities. Communities In Schools

continue to operate at high levels of standards and excellence because of citizens such as Mr. McIntosh. It is not we, Communities In Schools that solely bring this

recognition, but also the students of Communities In Schools and William Penn who have benefited from both the time and generosity of Mr. McIntosh. We can only

hope that we continue to receive volunteers that are as connected to the mission of Communities In Schools as we have in Mr. McIntosh.
