[Ed. note - this is part 2 of the CorelDRAW reviewpublished last month.]I was so excited with all the new features in CorelPHOTO-PAINT and Capture that I didn’t say much aboutCorelDRAW in Part I. Here’s how it can be useful formore than “drawing”.One of the world’s best-kept secrets is what a workhorseCorelDRAW X3 is when it comes to recreatingdocuments. Although the folks asking me for an updatedversion of their formsdidn’t know thedifference between atypewriter and acomputer, they did haveenough sense to asksomeone who knows howto turn the computer on -me. I’m sure the folks inCanada didn’t know thatthey should include all theforms for a Californiaschool district in theirtemplates, so, pulling outtheir versatile tool boxes,I proceed with my project.First step: Locate a paperoriginal. Scan it with PHOTO-PAINT. Import intoCorelDRAW. Now I have a background template. Lookingthrough the font list, I find that Old English is closeenough to the fancy font needed. Because there is littlewriting, I decide to retype each text section in a separatetext box. That allows me to move the elements around thepage individually. When signatures in the original extendbeyond their boundaries it’s easier to erase that sectionentirely and start over. Layering my text boxes over theoriginal, however, made it easy to match type size. (Workin progress, Figure 1.)Total work time, under an hour. Downside: 1) I nowrealize that not only are photos not to be believed anymore, other documents might also need outsideverification. 2) ‘they’ know I know how to do this, so Imay get aked again. (See the results in Figure 2.)As a product, pricing is one place that CorelDRAWtrumps the Adobe products. Another is the vast library ofclipart that can be imported and used as-is, or modified, disassembled, recombined and otherwise edited. Each

version of CorelDRAW that I’ve seen has come with athick book thumbnailing the fonts and graphics. I just wishthey could come up with better titles than X3001168'though I suppose that it’s more multi-lingual than trying tofind a way to say “Walrus Head’ In English, German,French, Spanish, and Japanese in less space than the actualgraphic uses. One place where Corel, as well as Adobe, could use moreresources is with Help and tutorials. I could fill pages with

details of circularreferences, definitionswith no clue about howto access or use a feature, and much more. None ofthis will surprise anyonewho has accessed theoxymoronic Help menuof just about anyWindows application. However, being #1,Adobe applications havethe advantage of beingpart of the graphics artscurriculum in secondaryschools, adult programs,as well as in the syllabus

of many college art departments. As a result, the Adobeonline community is larger and one has a better chance ofbeing rescued. It seems that Corel users would benefitmore from providing helpful Help.Corel’s 429 page User Guide puts the built-in Tutorialfiles for both CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT on paper. This is convenience for those who prefer that medium orare researching away from their workstation, but asfrustrating as the on-line “help”. More ink is devoted to thePick Tool—a concept with correlations in word processingand other applications—than to layers and channels, twoconcepts that are unique to the digital graphics environment. At least the online tutorial provided through a third party(lynda.com) had better editing than Corel’s assumptiveexplanations.I found that the little CorelDRAW HANDBOOK was themost helpful, despite its unevenness. Seven differentgraphic artists walk the user through one project each. Thequality ranges from the Help-less (“I picked a brush anddrew a line I liked) to the clearly instructional (“Right-

click Layer 1, choose Rename”, followed by a readable[!]screen capture of the appropriate menu tree.) Hire thisperson to rewrite all the Help files. Please.Exploring the full range of options, I attempted the formalCorel online Help several times. To get started, I neededto enter something called a PIN (Product IdentificationNumber) in order to complete my request. Nothing in mybox specifically identified itself as a PIN. Wanderingback to Corel’s Web site a few weeks later, I found amessage that said Ihadn’t used thecorrect code. So Icalled the 800number. The in-troductory voice mailtold me that I couldspeed up service byentering my PIN.Nevertheless, I waitedcalmly for the 9minutes it took me toget through. When Igot there, it was clearthat my questionabout PINs hadn’tcome to the call centerand we parted with aguess or two aboutwhat I should do.Are you confused by the fact that the CorelDRAWGraphics Suite has an application called CorelDRAW? Ifrequently am. For the graphically disabled (like me),CorelDRAW X3 has plenty of compensatory tools to getme beyond the printed word. The vector drawing program,CorelDRAW, has been the core of the suite since itsbeginning. PHOTO-PAINT is the bitmap editing portionof the suite, good for dealing with camera images andother bitmaps. Rumor has itthat Adobe Photoshop CS2 isstronger, but PHOTO-PAINTX3 has enough horsepower torescue me. However, given thatall these products operate in aspecialized universe, you canexpect to spend some timegetting through the learningphase. This looks like a good segueinto pricing. The Corel product

is $400 for a boxed version of the entire suite, and a lot lessfor upgrades. You’d need to fork over $1200 for thecomplete Adobe CS2 Professional. For a professionalartist, whose time is literally money and who has used theAdobe product line so intensively that its idiosyncrasiesare as familiar as freckles in the mirror, CS2 may be cost-effective. Did I mention that’s not me? The Adobeapplications are organized through a central media managercalled Adobe Bridge. Sounds like a really good idea, except that it adds to the horsepower demanded by CS2.In addition to the price of the software, you need toconsider the price of a machine that approaches

professional gamerspecs; dual core AMDAthlon FX, 2 GBRAM, etc.In summary, theCorelDRAW X3Graphics Suite is themost cost effectivesolution to vector-based drawing andphoto editing thatword processors can’thandle. Simpler, lessexpensive graphicsapplications are muchmore limiting. High-end professionalproduction tools, suchas dedicated draftingapplications, cost a lot

more for the software and for the hardware needed to runthem. CorelDRAW X3 Graphics Suite is a reasonablypriced suite that has the tools I need to expand my skills, minimize the complexity, and keep my attention on thetask at hand. The only reason you wouldn’t want the CorelDRAWsuite yourself is that you’re indifferent to a creativechallenge and that you know an accidental techie who can

be persuaded to fix yourphotos for you, outsmartuneditable online forms, design fliers, and take thecredit for artistic talent. Butyou’re missing a lot. GetCorelDRAW X3 GraphicsSuite for yourself and find outhow much fun graphics canreally be.

Presentation:Blake Ross talked about new features in Firefox 2.Phishing protection is one new feature. Dynamicsuggestions will help you improve your searching. Firefox2 has a ReOpen tab, useful for a quick rescue when youaccidentally close the browser. Tabbed browsing organizesmultiple windows and navigation. If you leave Firefoxand then immediately open it again, you are returned tothe environment you left. Live Bookmarks allow you tokeep up with sites where information is updated constantlysuch as news and eBay.Social networking is a huge phenomenon but it is availableto only a segment of users. Now that Firefox is a viableenterprise, the crew has been able to go back to its interestin connecting people. Current social networking schemesdo not address one’s different affiliations (e.g., familymember, employee, poker player). The "Tagger" platformthat is being developed will allow people to share differentaspects of their lives with the members of their chosengroups, coordinating among web postings and local files. With Blake, Stephen Koren presented the Tagger platformwhich they envision as a way of managing private, shared, and public content at one website. Because thewebsite is managed locally, the creative process happensat the speed of the desktop. Blake hopes that Tagger willbe launched by the end of the year. The meeting was adjourned at 9:50 P.M. The next meetingwill start at 7:30 P.M. on Friday, September 1, 2006.
